Madison Ends Quarrier Volleyball Season

QuarriersThe Madison Bulldogs ended the Quarrier Volleyball season by beating Dell Rapids in the semifinals of the Region 3A tournament on Thursday, November 6th, at Sioux Falls Christian High School.  The Bulldogs won by scores of 23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-15.

Dell Rapids opened up the match with a win in the first set.  Madison quickly recovered from the first set and controlled the entire second set to tie the match at 1-1.  Dell Rapids appeared to be headed to a second set win in the third set leading 18-12, but Madison rallied to outscore Dell Rapids 13-3 to gain the momentum and pick up their second win of the match.  Carrying the momentum of the come-from-behind win in the previous set, Madison rallied to the match win in the fourth set.

Emily Boyle was one of the leaders for the Quarriers in the match finishing with 12 service points and two blocks.  Sarah Haak added six points along with 18 assists.  Shelby Wrage tallied 16 digs and six service points.  Kiah Schumacher added seven kills for the Quarriers, and Brittany Kludt had four kills and two blocks.

Seven Quarrier senior volleyball players had their Dell Rapids career come to an end.  The seniors are Baily Munk, Tiffany Finkral, Kyrsten Williams, Brittnay Welbig, Emily Boyle, Shelby Wrage, and Sarah Haak.

The Quarriers season ends with a record of 12-17.  Madison moves on to play Sioux Falls Christian in the Region 3A Championship match on Tuesday, November 11th, in Dell Rapids.

Quarrier Volleyball Advances in Region 3A Tournament

DRvsFIS_VB_11-4-14_1The Dell Rapids Quarriers defeated the Flandreau Indians on Tuesday, November 4th, in the opening round of the Region 3A volleyball tournament held at Dell Rapids.  The Quarriers won by scores of 25-11, 25-6, 25-19.

Dell Rapids took an early 3-2 lead in the first game.  The Quarriers then went on a 15-1 run to extend their lead to 18-3.  The Flandreau Indians outscore Dell Rapids 6-4 to make the score 22-9, but Dell Rapids closed out the first game at 25-11.

The second game was again close very early at 2-1.  Dell Rapids then took an 8-2 lead before the Flandreau Indians pulled within four points at 8-4.  Dell Rapids then managed to go on a 17-2 run to win the second game.DRvsFIS_VB_11-4-14_2

The third game was back and forth for much of the game.  Dell Rapids opened up the third game on a 5-0 run, but the Indians pulled within a point at 5-4.  The Quarriers extended the lead to 12-7, but Flandreau Indians were able to tie the game at 13-13.  The game was tied at every point up to 19-19.  The Quarriers closed out the game on a 6-0 run to win the match.

Dell Rapids improves to 12-16 on the year.  The Quarriers will face the Madison Bulldogs in the semifinals on Thursday, November 6th, at Sioux Falls Christian High School.

Five Cardinal Footbal Players Earn DVC Honors

DRSM LogoAfter finishing second in the Dakota Valley Conference with a 7-1 record, and an 8-2 overall record, five players from the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal football team earned DVC end-of-the-season honors.

Josh Brown (Jr), Wes Heinricy (Sr), Jacob Glazier (Jr), and Christian Schneiders (Jr) were named to the DVC All-Conference Football Team.  Jacob Frost (Jr) earned an Honorable Mention.

Andrew King of Arlington was named the DVC MVP, and head coach Steve Gilbertson of Arlington was named DVC Coach of the Year.

Canistota Ends the Cardinals Season

DellRapidsStMaryFootballThe Canistota Hawks (9-1) defeated the Dell Rapids St. Mary Cardinals 52-6 in the quarterfinals of the 9B South Dakota High School football playoffs on Monday, November 3rd, in Canistota.

The Hawks started the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run by Shay Jolley on a read option early in the first quarter.  After forcing the Cardinals to punt, for the second time in as many possessions, Jolley scored his second touchdown on a 5-yard run making the score 16-0 in favor of Canistota.

St. Mary started to gain a little momentum only to have two turnovers on back-to-back drives; an interception by Casey Hansen and a fumble by Josh Brown. Canistota was able to score twice more in the half on touchdowns by Jerad Nielsen (12-yard run), and Jacob Buseman’s 15-yard reception from Jolley making it 28-0 at half.

The start of the second half was much the same as the first. The Hawks came out and scored quickly in the third quarter on a 50-yard touchdown run by Nielsen and converted two-point conversion to make the score 36-0.  With Canistota leading by more than 35 points, the running clock started in the second half.

Canistota got another touchdown by Buseman of 63 yards before the Cardinals were able to prevent the shut out. With 3:35 left in the game, Hansen found Zach Geraets in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown reception. Canistota finished the scoring on a 69-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback Scott Jolley finishing the scoring at 52-6.

The Cardinals finish the season with an 8-2 record.  Josh Brown broke the season rushing yardage record for the Cardinals with 1,465 yards this season.  Zach Geraets tied the school record with 11 sacks on the season.

Quarrier Football Reaches Semifinals

DRHSvsVerm_FB_11-3-14_1The Dell Rapids Quarrier football teamed reached the semifinals in the 11A South Dakota High School Football Playoffs with a win over the Vermillion Tanagers 57-16 on Monday, November 3rd in Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers controlled the game from the start after Riley Schmidt took the opening kick-off 80 yards for a touchdown to give Dell Rapids an 8-0 lead 13 seconds into the game.  Schmidt scored again two minutes later on a 70-yard touchdown run to put Dell Rapids ahead 14-0.  Schmidt found the endzone for the third time in less than five minutes with a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown with 7:35 left in the first quarter.  Dell Rapids added a fourth touchdown with 4:00 left in the quarter on a 17-yard pass from Jase Nelson to Riley Jurgensen to go ahead 28-0 after the first quarter.

Dell Rapids picked up where they left off in the second quarter scoring on a 2-yard DRHSvsVerm_FB_11-3-14_2touchdown pass from Nelson to Beau Carpenter with 10:18 to go in the second quarter.  Vermillion finally got on the scoreboard with 2:33 left in the half on a 1-yard touchdown run by Tyler Madsen to cut the lead to 35-8.  But the Quarriers would add one more score before halftime, this time on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to Jurgensen again with :14 left to give Dell Rapids a 42-8 halftime lead.

Vermillion scored first in the third quarter.  The Tanagers capitalized on a Dell Rapids fumble, scoring with 7:07 left in the quarter on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Carter Kratz to Madsen.  Dell Rapids added two more scores in the third quarter.  Schmidt added another 40-yard touchdown run with 6:25 to go, and Sam White scored on a 65-yard touchdown run with 1:24 left in the quarter.

Dell Rapids finished the night with 382 yards of total offense, 76 passing yards and 306 rushing yards.  The Quarriers picked up 14 first downs and were 6-8 on third down conversions.  Nelson finished 6-12 passing for 76 yards and three touchdowns.  Jurgensen had two catches for 25 yards, both for touchdowns.  Schmidt had eight carries for 178 yards and two touchdowns, and also had a kick off return and punt return for touchdowns.  White had two carries for 66 yards and a touchdown.  Nate McKee led the defense with seven tackles on the night and one sack.  Austin Eulberg had five tackles.  Ben Gillogly added four tackles, two of them of loss.

Dell Rapids improves to 9-1 on the year.  The Quarries will host the West Central Trojans on Saturday, November 8th, at 4:00 p.m.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Dakota Valley Spoils Senior Night for Quarrier Volleyball

DRvsDV_10-30-14_2The Dakota Valley Panthers defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers volleyball team on senior night by scores of 25-10, 25-12, 25-9 on Thursday, October 30th, in Dell Rapids.

Dakota Valley jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first game, and then extended the lead to 10-1 before Dell Rapids could get their second point.  The Panthers pushed the lead to 10 points at 12-2.  Dell Rapids was able to cut the lead to seven points at 12-5, but that was as close as they would get in the first game.

Dell Rapids scored first and held a brief 1-0 lead in the second game, but the Panthers scored the next four in a row to take a 4-1 lead.  With the score at 11-3 in favor of Dakota Valley, the Quarriers scored the next three to pull within five at 11-6.  But the Panthers went on another 4-0 run to push the lead to nine, and then Dakota Valley outscored Dell Rapids 10-6 from that point for the win.

Dell Rapids hung tough with the Panthers early in the third game.  The game was tied at DRvsDV_10-30-14_11-1, and the Qurriers were within one point at 6-5.  The Panthers started to pull away from that point in the game outscoring Dell Rapids 19-4 the rest of the way for the match win.

Dell Rapids finishes the season 11-16 on the year and will be the #3 seed in the Region 3A tournament.  The Quarriers will host the Flandreau Indian School on Tuesday, November 4th, in the first round of the Region 3A tournament.  The match will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Football Cruises into Next Round

DellRapidsStMaryFootballThe Dell Rapids St. Mary Cardinals pulled off a stellar first round 9B playoff victory over the Waverly/South Shore Coyotes 52-22 on Tuesday, October 28th, in Dell Rapids.  St. Mary scored 44 unanswered points after trailing 14-6 in the middle of the first quarter.

On the first possession of the game, the Coyotes marched down the field and scored on a touchdown run by Bailey Comes. The big play of that drive was a 20-yard pass on third and 18 to give the Coyotes the opportunity to keep the drive alive. St. Mary came right back and scored on a 7-yard screen pass from Casey Hansen to Christian Schnieders making it 8-8.  Each team scored on their second possession. The Coyotes scored on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Joe Jellis to Jacob Boettcher. The Cardinals scored on a 2-yard touchdown run by Schnieders. The difference between the two drives was the 2-point conversions. Waverly/South Shore failed to convert, while St. Mary was able to punch theirs in for a 16-14 lead.

The game was all St. Mary’s from that point forward. The Cardinals scored on touchdowns by Josh Brown (19 yards), Jacob Glazier (5 yards), Schnieders (15 yards), Hansen to Wes Heinricy (20 Yards), and capped off by Heinricy (5 yard).  St. Mary was 5-7 on 2-point conversions on the night.

Waverly/South Shore finished their season 4-5, and the Cardinals improved to 8-1.  St. Mary will travel to #2 Canistota on Monday, November 3rd.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Football Advances to Quarterfinals

DRHSvsSisseton_FB_10-28-14_1The Dell Rapids Quarriers advanced to the quarterfinals of the 11A playoffs with a 41-12 opening round win over the Sisseton Redmen on Tuesday, October 28th, in Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers scores on their first five possessions of the game.  After forcing Sisseton to punt after three plays, Dell Rapids scored on their first offensive play of the game.  Keegan Hemenway scored on a 32-yard touchdown run and then kicked the extra point to give Dell Rapids a 7-0 lead with 10:03 left in the first quarter.  The Quarriers scores just a mere three minutes later on a two-yard touchdown run by Riley Schmidt with 7:24 in the quarter to go ahead 14-0.  The Quarriers added one more touchdown before the quarter was over.  With :10 left Jase Nelson connected with Schmidt on a 63-yard touchdown pass increasing the Dell Rapids lead to 21-0.

Dell Rapids continued to score at will in the second quarter.  Schmidt scored his third touchdown on another two-yard run with 10:29 to go in the half.  The Quarriers got the ball back on a turnover, and scored again with 9:29 DRHSvsSisseton_FB_10-28-14_2left in the quarter.  This time Nelson connected with Riley Jurgensen on a 1o-yard touchdown pass to put Dell Rapids ahead 35-0.  Sisseton was able to get on the board with 4:46 left in the half on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Medenwald to Ethan Kranhold to cut the lead to 35-6 heading into halftime.

Neither team was able to get much offense going in the third quarter.  The score remained 35-6 at the end of the third.  Schmidt found the endzone for the fourth time in the game with 11:53 to go in the game on a 20-yard run to put the Quarriers ahead 41-6.  Sisseton added their second score on a fumble recovery in the endzone for a touchdown by Nick Peterson with 4:25 left to play in the game.

Schmidt finished the game with eight carries for 109 yards and three rushing touchdowns.  Hemenway had three carries for 78 yards and a touchdown.  Tanner Ljunggren had three carries for 41 yards.  Nelson went 5-7 passing for 149 yards and two touchdowns.  Schmidt had three receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown.  Jurgensen had one catch for 10 yards and a touchdown.  Beau Carpenter had a catch for nine yards.

Seth Anderson led the defense with six tackles, one sack, and one fumble recovery.  Jurgensen finished the game with four tackles.  Nate McKee added three tackles.  Jacob Faux, Anthony Miller, Ross Wiebenga, and Carpenter each had an interception.  Tanner Heim had a fumble recovery.  The Dell Rapids defense force six turnovers and held Sisseton to 257 yards of total offense.

Dell Rapids improves to 8-1 on the year.  The Quarriers will host Vermillion on Monday, November 3rd.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Volleyball Earns Win in Beresford

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team earned a 3-1 match win over the Beresford Watchdogs on Monday, October 27th, in Beresford.  The game scores were 25-22, 25-15, 18-25, 25-23.

Mikaela Stofferahn finished the night with 10 service points, 14 digs, and one block.  Brittany Kludt had six kills and two blocks.  Tiffany Finkral added five kills, 12 digs, and two blocks.  Sarah Haak dished out 24 set assists and also had 20 digs.  Shelby Wrage added 23 digs for the Quarrier defense.

The Quarriers improve to 11-15 on the year.  Dell Rapids will host Dakota Valley on Thursday, October 30th, in the final regular season match of the year.  The match will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

JV Results:
The JV team lost to Beresford 2-1.  Trinity Gordon (7 points and 5 kills); Hannah Welbig (5 points); Arial Hoffman (10 kills and 3 points); Megan Miles (3 kills and 1 block); Chloe Solberg (12 set assists) lead the way.

C Team Results:
The C team fell 20-25 and 12-25.  Autumn Schumaker had 6 points.  Sydney Stofferahn and Kinsey Carr had 3 and 2 kills respectively.

Cardinal Volleyball Team Falls in Final Home Match

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals were defeated in their final regular-season home match by the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders by scores of 17-25, 20-25, 20-25.

Kaitlyn Vortherms anchored the defense with 15 digs on the night.  Lindsey Wolles added 10 digs, and Ally Mullaney finished with nine.  Mullaney had three blocks, while Riley Wolles had two blocks.  L. Wolles also had nine set assists in the match.  Mullaney tallied six kills, and R. Wolles added two kills.  Claudia Schwebach notched three service aces, and Vortherms finished with two aces.

The Cardinals fall to 10-17 on the year.  St Mary will finish up the regular season in Canistota on Thursday, October 30th.
