Darla Van Asselt

Darla Rae Van Asselt, 44, passed away on September 25, 2012 at the Dougherty Hospice House after a battle with cancer.  She was surrounded every minute by family and friends.

Darla was born on December 26, 1967 to Clement and Mary Ann (Berndt) Kloucek.  She was raised on a farm south of Scotland.  She graduated from Scotland High School in 1986.  She loved the farm and playing basketball and running track.  Darla attended South Dakota State University and graduated with a double major in microbiology and medical technology.  She finished her medical technology certification in Sioux City, Iowa. Darla began her career with Aberdeen Family Physicians in 1992 and then moved on to Avera Health Systems in Sioux Falls, SD.  In 2009, she completed a degree in Histology and was then promoted to her current position as Supervisor of the Histology department at Avera McKennan.  She touched many lives in her medical career.

Darla married Tom Van Asselt on October 10, 1992.  They lived in the Aberdeen area for 10 years where they started their family of boys.  Austin was born in 1995 and Alex in 1997.  In 2002, the family moved to Colton, SD and was blessed with the addition of Tanner and Derek in 2004.  Darla loved attending and following her boys’ activities especially the Tri-Valley High School football team.  She took great pride in her garden, sharing the produce with family and friends.  Her most recent love was the family cabin on Brandt Lake.  Darla loved all outside activities from helping Tom and the boys on the farm with the animals to water and snow skiing.

Darla was a spunky, spirited young woman who gained everyone’s love and respect through her straight forward approach to life.  She will be missed by many, but her spirit will live on in everyone she touched.

Grateful for having shared Darla’s life are her husband Tom and children Austin, Alex, Tanner and Derek, her mother, Mary Ann Kloucek and 2 sisters Carol (Dennis) Streyle and Ann (Peter) Kinney.  Her father and mother in-law, William and Ramona Van Asselt, and in-laws Rhonda (Dave) Anderson, Mark (Peg) Van Asselt, and Mary (Mike) Will along with many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.  She was preceded in death by her father Clement Joseph Kloucek and infant great niece Carolyn.

Visitation will be held at First Lutheran Church in Colton, SD on Friday September 28, 2012 beginning at  5 PM with family present at 6:30 and prayer service at 7 PM.  Funeral services will be 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at First Lutheran Church in Colton, SD.

The family has established a memorial fund in Darla’s name.

Jeffrey Hogan

Jeffrey Hogan, 51, of Sioux Falls passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012.  Memorial services will begin at 1:00 PM Friday, September 28, 2012 at Minnehaha Funeral Home Chapel in Dell Rapids. Inurnment will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Dell Rapids.  Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Jeffrey W. Hogan was born March 14, 1961 to Alfred (Hogie) Martha (Mickie) Hogan in Dell Rapids, SD. Jeff attended St. Mary School, graduating in 1979. That year he joined the Army National Guard and was stationed at Ft. Sill, OK.

Jeff was a concrete finisher for Beck and Hofer Construction. Due to failing health, he then worked for IRET Properties in the maintenance department.

Left to cherish his memory are his life partner, JoAnn Quigley, Sioux Falls; siblings, Gerald (Jane) Hogan, Mardelle (Jim) Berg, Marilyn Hogan (Curt Groen), all of Dell Rapids and Monica Zylstra, Phoenix, AZ; JoAnn’s sister, Glenda (Mike) Hernandez, St. Paul, MN and brother-in-law, Paul Wyatt, Sr., Sioux Falls; nieces and nephews, Chris Hogan, Byron Hogan, Darren Berg, Paul Wyatt, Nathan and Mario Hernandez, Suzanne Long, Jennifer Hogan, Sarah Skinner, Mariana Costa Dos Reis and Sara Svec; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Casey Zylstra.

Howard Ellingson

Howard  Ellingson, 87, of Dell Rapids passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012 surrounded by his family after a short illness. Funeral services will begin at 1:00pm Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00pm Tuesday at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Howard was born April 21, 1925 in Peever, SD to parents Theodore and Clara (Sanders Pemrick) Ellingson. Theodore passed away from complications of pneumonia when Howard was nine. Howard served during WW II in the Philippines. He was awarded a Purple Heart during this time. Upon his discharge in 1946, he went on to earn an accounting degree. Following graduation he began work as a bookkeeper for Cockran Chevrolet in Dell Rapids. They moved to Milbank where they owned their own accounting firm for several years. He later moved to Webster to be a co-owner of the Loyal Chevrolet dealership. Howard moved to Madison where he purchased Cherry Lanes bowling alley and later went to work for Domestic Seed as a salesman. He  moved to Dell Rapids where he and Marcie owned Dells Bowl retiring in 1991. He then worked part time as a camper salesman for Spader’s Campers in Dell Rapids. He served as Treasurer for St. John Lutheran Church in Madison and was also Treasurer and President of the South Dakota Seed Association.

On December 17, 1949 he was united in marriage to Marcie Angeline Dieken. They were blessed with four sons. Howard was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids, Dell Rapids American Legion, VFW of Madison,  a longtime member of the Madison Elks Club and belonged to the American Men’s Bowling Congress for many years. In 2009 he was honored to be one of the Vets who went on the Honor Flight to Washington DC. Howard loved square dancing, collecting  Corvairs, fishing, bowling, golf, camping, and playing cards and shooting pool. Watching his sons and grandsons race gave him much pleasure too. The last twelve years, Grandpa Howard was an avid sports fan of all his grandchildren’s games. He was especially proud to see grandson Braeden play football and intercept a pass in the dome last year when the Quarriers won the State Championship game.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Marcie of sixty two years, Dell Rapids; sons, Ted and Ron (Terry), Madison and Mike (Julie), Dell Rapids; daughter-in-law, Shelley, Dell Rapids; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Eileen Burkhart; and his curly tailed friends, Punchy and Amy. Howard was preceded in death by his parents and son, Dan in March of 2009.

Ordia Rave

Ordia F. Rave, 93, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2012 at Orchard Hills in Dell Rapids. Her funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at the Reformed Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Logan Reformed Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 with the family present at 6:30 p.m. and a time of sharing at 7:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home. http://www.kahlerfh.com/

Ordia was born on December 13, 1918, on a farm near Lennox, SD, the daughter of Henry and Vera (Martens) Uhden. At a young age, she moved with her family to a farm east of Dell Rapids. She attended Trent School and graduated from Trent High School in 1936. She attended Northern State University and graduated with a teaching degree. She taught country school until she was married. She married Arthur L. Rave on June 7, 1942 at the Uhden family farm. After their marriage, the couple farmed and was still active in farming at the time of Ordia’s death. They couple moved to an acreage in 1975 and then into Dell Rapids in 2011.

Ordia was a member of the Reformed Church in Dell Rapids, the Garden Club where she was a past state officer, and was active with the ladies aid and Sunday school. She was a poll sitter during elections for many years.  She enjoyed reading, wrote many letters, never forgetting her children or grandchildren’s birthdays. She remembered them all.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Arthur L. Rave of Dell Rapids; her sons, David (Jean) Rave of Dell Rapids, Lloyd (Linda) Rave of Dell Rapids and John (LeeAnn) Rave of Dell Rapids; her daughter, Magelle Narigon of Dell Rapids; her nine grandchildren, Tim Rave, Tracy Welbig, Shawnna Godwin, Heath Rave, John Narigon, Jessica Eckmann, Joslyn Nelson, Jesse Rave and Jasmine Buseman and her 16 great grandchildren and her brother, Clarence (Virginia) Uhden of OR.

Lloyd “Shorty” Thiele

Lloyd “Shorty” Thiele, age 85, died at Golden Living Center in Madison on September 20, 2012.

He was born on April 20, 1928 at Colman to Fred and Anna (Kroger) Thiele. He married Gloria Carlson on December 26, 1953 and they were married until 1969. He married Helen Thorsheim Simons on October 20, 1973.

He is survived his wife – Helen of Madison. Three daughters – Lana (Myron Thomas) Brewer and Joy (John) Martin of Colorado Springs, CO and Elizabeth Bounds of Madison. 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. Three sisters – Gladys Heinricy of Colman, Laura Croon of Dell Rapids and Wilma Beck of Madison.

He was preceded in death by his parents – 3 brothers – Leo, Mahlon and Frank.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, September 24, 2012, at St John Lutheran Church in Madison with Rev Daryl Schubert officiating. Burial will be in North Preston Cemetery, Lake Preston, SD.

He grew up in Colman where he graduated from high school. He served in the US Army Air Corps from 1947 until 1950 receiving the rank of Sergeant. After the service he worked for Brende Electric until 1957 when he began farming. In 1960 he had a wrecker service until 1967, worked for Bower Electric from 1967-1969, drove semi-truck for T & R Electric from 1969-1974 and from 1974 until 1990, worked as a electrician through Electrical Workers Local 426.

He was a member of St John Lutheran Church and the American Legion.

There will be a prayer service at 7:00 PM on Sunday at Weiland Funeral Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements.

Cynthia Hockett

Cynthia A. Hockett, 56, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2012 with her family by her side at The Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD.

Cindy was born May 27, 1956 in Spencer, Iowa to Mildred (Millie) Mullett and Lloyd Hill. She grew up in Brandon, SD with her mother and father Kenneth and Millie Hughes. Cindy graduated from Brandon Valley High School and attended Worthington Community College.

She married James Hockett on March 4, 1978 in Brandon, SD. For the past five years and at the time of her death, she was employed at Midco Call Center-Customer Service.

Cindy will be always remembered for her caring personality, her soft touch and infectious smile.  She loved to do crossword puzzles, drawing, writing poems and stories, but her passion was spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband, Jim Hockett of Crooks, SD; son, Corey Hockett of Huron, SD and daughter, Jamie Hockett, and son-in-law, Brent Van Regenmorter of Sioux Falls, SD; mother, Millie Hughes of Sioux Falls, SD; granddaughters, Cassidy Tewes and Sidney Hockett of Crooks, SD; grandson, Blake Van Regenmorter of Sioux Falls SD; three brothers, Randy Hill and wife Sharol of Crooks, SD, Raymond Hill of Ocheyedan, IA and Louie Hughes of Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters, Susan Popavich and husband Mike of Burnsville, MN; Flo Bowden and husband Dennis Binkerd of Sioux Falls, SD;   mother-in-law, Mary Hockett of Madison, SD; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Jorge and Lenette Hockett; 2 brothers-in-law, Bill Hockett and Leonard Hockett; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Cindy was preceded in death by her fathers, Kenneth Hughes and Lloyd Hill; and one brother, Jeff Hughes.

Richard Visser

Richard Emery Visser, 72, rural Ada, MN, died on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on June 17, 1940, to Gust and Esther (Merkins) Visser, in Ada. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church, Ada. Richard graduated from Ada High School in 1959. He moved to a farm east of Ada, in 1959, with his brothers. Richard stayed on the farm where he continued to milk cows. On November 2, 1968, Richard married Linda Lively at Trinity Lutheran Church, Beltrami, MN. They continued to dairy farm until 1999.

In the following years, Richard raised beef cattle, drove truck for Visser Trenching and pursued his lifelong hobby of raising fancy pigeons. Richard was a lifetime member of Grace Lutheran Church, a longtime member of Ada American Legion and a supervisor of the Lake Ida Township board for many years. Richard served in the Army National Guard from June 30, 1959 to June 29, 1965. He was also an active member of the Holstein Association for nearly 50 years and the National Pigeon Association for 15 years.

Integrity, loyalty and honor describe his character and way of life. His gracious smile and easy going spirit allowed Richard to meet people and develop lifelong friendships. Over the years, deer hunting and, more recently, ice fishing were great times with family and friends. Gatherings with family and neighbors were routine at the Visser home. Richard’s life revolved around family and farming. He was very proud of his sons, their wives and grandchildren. And, Richard adored his wife of 44 years, Linda.

Richard is survived by his wife, Linda, Ada; Ronald (Kari), Dell Rapids, SD; Barry (Shannon) Hutchinson, MN; Tom (Mandy), Braham, MN; six grandchildren: Shaina, Logan, Grant, Rachel, Kayla, and Hannah; brothers, Robert (Joan), Ada; James “Pete” (Phylis), Gary, MN; Earl (Lorayn), Ada; sisters-in-law, Shirley Visser, Ada, and Marlys Visser, Gary, MN; several nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Don and Gerald; and an infant sister, Margaret.

Juliet (Kringen) Murren

Juliet K. Murren passed away Friday, September 14, 2012 at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids, SD. Funeral service will begin at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, September 19 at George Boom Funeral Home, Sioux Falls. The family will be present to greet friends for visitation from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Juliet K. Kringen Murren, daughter of Emelius and Carrie Kringen, was born on May 20, 1922 in Dell Rapids, SD. Juliet grew up in rural Dell Rapids and received her education in Sioux Falls, graduating from Washington High School class of 1941.

Juliet was united in marriage with Leland L. Murren on November 5, 1943 in Garretson, SD. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls and Brandon. Family was of utmost importance to both Juliet and Leland and time spent with her siblings and extended family in rural South Dakota created many precious memories the family still holds dear today.

Juliet was a homemaker and mother to five children. She enjoyed serving as Sunday School teacher at both East Side Lutheran and Grace Lutheran Church for many years. Juliet also enjoyed gardening and quilting. Throughout the years, she had many entries in the county fair. She was a member of the Tri-State Garden Club, the Swingers Instrumental Group and the Topsey-Turvy Band.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Loren Murren and his wife Nancy of Rapid City, SD, Garry Murren and his wife Pam of Norfolk, NE, Julie Zwak and her husband Gerald of Sioux Falls, Marc Murren and his wife LuAnn of Sioux Falls, and John Murren and his wife JoLene of Brandon, SD; 11 grandchildren, JoLee Zwak of Sioux Falls, Jerry Zwak and his wife Lori of Pipestone, MN, Thad Murren and his wife Deb of Norfolk, NE, Tara Heinricy of Des Moines, IA, Paul Murren of Phoenix, AZ, Bradley Murren of Phoenix, AZ, Amy Heinert and her husband Paul of Sioux Falls, Emily Murren of Sioux Falls, John J. Albert Powers

Albert L. Powers, 88, of Trent passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Dells Area Health Center. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM Monday, September 17, 2012 at Messiah Lutheran Church, rural Trent. Burial will be at Hills of Rest Memorial Park in Sioux Falls. Visitation with the family present will be from 2:00 to 6:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 5:00PM Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Albert was born June 3, 1924 near Brandon, SD to parents Lena (Sittig) and Albert Powers. He spent his early years growing up on a farm near Brandon. He received his education at Brandon Public Schools.

In December of 1946 he married Anita Carlson of Sioux Falls. They started farming in 1948 near Sioux Falls before moving to their farm near Trent, SD in 1951. They were blessed with three boys. Anita passed away December 9, 2009.

Albert served in the U.S. Army as an automotive mechanic from January of 1945 until November of 1946. He enjoyed hunting pheasants and waterfowl with family and friends and was always up for a friendly game of cards. Albert was an active member of the American Legion for over forty years and for many years was Sergeant of Arms. He was Fire Chief for the Trent Fire Department for many years. Albert also enjoyed traveling across the country to visit family and going to St. Louis for a baseball game. In fact, Albert was an umpire in Trent when the Villa Rec sponsored a girl’s softball team for many years. In later years he was an avid NASCAR fan.

Albert was preceded in death by his wife, Anita; brother, Russell and parents, Bert and Lena.

Francis “Stien” Morris

Francis “Stien” Morris, 84, died Sunday, September 9, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls. Funeral mass will be at 10:30am Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at St. Christina Catholic Church, Parker with burial with military honors at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-6:00pm Tuesday at the Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home, Parker with a Scripture Service/Rosary to be said at 7:30pm Tuesday at the Church.

Francis James Morris was born on September 20, 1927 at Parker, SD to John and Wanda (Aldrich) Morris. He grew up and attended school at Parker before serving in the US Navy during WW II. On May 24, 1952 he was united in marriage to Minerva Petersen at Parker. He was employed with the South Dakota Highway Department before becoming employed with the US Post Office in Parker as a clerk. In 1981 he was named Postmaster at Parker where he served until his retirement in 1986. For many years he was the business manager for the Parker Public School and also operated Morris Dray Line. He was a lifelong member of St. Christina Catholic Church where he served on the council, cemetery board, and was a life member of the Parker VFW Post 2128 and past commander.
