2013 Dell Rapids Youth Football Clinic

July 18, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The 2013 Dell Rapids Youth Football Clinic was held Tuesday, July 17th, and Wednesday, July 18th, at Brown Park in Dell Rapids. Over 70 youth ranging from 2nd grade through 6th grade participated in the 2-day clinic.  Some of the drills the campers went through included shield blocking, D-End figure 8 chase, linebacker pursuit, heads-up tackling, defensive-back box drill, hands-on catching, precision passing, and running-back agility.  The stations that the campers went through included Quarterback, Wide Receiver, Running Back, Linemen, Linebacker, Defensive Back, and Kicking/Punting.

The clinic was put on by current and past Dell Rapids football players.  The entire staff of the event included Andy Scherff, Brett Nichols, Bryce Koch, Channing Barber, Cody Nielson, Emily Kerns, Gus Haskell, Hunter White, Jackson Entringer, Jacob Habeger, John Elverson, Jordan Lindberg, Kahler Berven, Rachel Hansen, Riley Schmidt, Tanner Munk, Tanner Solberg, Trevor Peter, Ty Hennen, Weston Hanson, Zach Barber, and Zach White.

Camp organizer/leader Greg Schwebach said, “I was glad to see all the kids from the community and several from surrounding towns joining together to better themselves and have fun with football. I was very fortunate to have such a great group of friends and former teammates come help make this all possible.  They all did a great job teaching the game of football and making it enjoyable for the kids. Coach Steve Hansen stopping in for a speech to the kids was very effective; all of the kids sat at full attention soaking in every one of his words.  Every technique we taught at the camp came straight from what we learned playing for him.  I was glad to see that a group of college and high school kids were able to give the time and make this happen.  This camp was truly made by the community, for the community.”

Mosquito Numbers, WNV Positives Increasing Across South Dakota

July 16, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

PIERRE, S.D. – Culex tarsalis mosquito numbers are increasing across the state and more of the mosquitoes are positive for the West Nile virus (WNV), says a state health official. The Culex tarsalis is the primary carrier of WNV in South Dakota.

“From the first week of July to the second, we saw a substantial increase in Culex mosquitoes and also a rise in the number of West Nile positives,” said Lon Kightlinger, state epidemiologist for the Department of Health. “Those higher numbers mean an increased risk of disease transmission so it’s important that people protect themselves with appropriate repellent.”

Kightlinger noted that historically 90 percent of South Dakota’s WNV cases have occurred from mid-July to mid-September. To date, South Dakota has reported four cases of human West Nile (Brookings, Buffalo, Jones and Spink counties) and 23 positive mosquito pools.

To prevent mosquito bites and reduce the risk of WNV:

  • Use mosquito repellents (DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535) and limit exposure by wearing pants and long sleeves in the evening.
  • Limit time outdoors from dusk to midnight when Culex mosquitoes are most active.
  • Get rid of standing water that gives mosquitoes a place to breed.
  • Support local mosquito control efforts.

Personal precautions are especially important for those at high risk for WNV – people over 50, pregnant women, transplant patients, individuals with diabetes or high blood pressure, and those with a history of alcohol abuse. People with severe or unusual headaches should see their physicians.

Find WNV prevention information on the Web at http://westnile.sd.gov.

Michael Tidemann Publishes Novel on Cyber Terrorism

July 16, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Baltic native Michael Tidemann has published a post-apocalyptic novel based in South Dakota and Iowa, “Doomsday: A tale of cyber terror”.

Tidemann’s novel, much of which is set in the Big Sioux River valley north of Sioux Falls as well as northwestern Iowa, is based on a big ‘what if’ – what if terrorists destroyed the Internet, resulting in the total collapse of civilization.

“We hear about this at least every week if not every day,” said Tidemann, a college instructor and writer living in Estherville, Iowa. “Cyber terrorism is no longer science fiction or fantasy, but a reality for which even Homeland Security is issuing warnings.”

Amid the chaos of The Fall, as it comes to be known, Phil Davis fulfills a promise to return a young woman to her father. But when they seek shelter in each other’s arms in a raging blizzard, there are consequences that will haunt them in years to come – just as Phil is finally reunited with the woman from his youth that even the horrors of war could not make him forget.

Amazon reviewers give the novel four out of five stars, comparing it to Stephen King’s The Stand.

Tidemann’s work has been fixture in the Boston-based online literary magazine, thewriteplaceatthewritetime.org, distributed to 38 countries and featuring writers from the New York Times, Newsweek, Business Week and The Wall Street Journal. His fiction has also appeared in Struggle magazine, Black Hills Monthly and The Longneck. His nonfiction has appeared in Overdrive, Hotbike, Snowmobile, the San Diego Union-Tribune and the Des Moines Register.

Tidemann graduated from Baltic High School and received his M.A. in English from the University of South Dakota where he studied creative writing with the late Fredrick Manfred and the late J.R. Milton.

He has received numerous awards from both the South Dakota Press Association and the Iowa Newspaper Association.

“Doomsday: A tale of cyber terror” is available at Zandbroz Variety at 209 S. Phillips in Sioux Falls; Trish’s Tailoring in the former Smith Publishing building at 303 LaDelle in Dell Rapids; and in public libraries in Dell Rapids, Baltic, Flandreau and Brookings. It’s also available on Amazon Kindle at http://www.amazon.com/Michael-Tidemann/e/B008THMTIW
