Local Beekeeper Receives Grant Money

August 21, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Dell City HoneyDavid Jastram and Dell City Honey recently received grant money from The Pollination Project on July 26th as part of their Daily Giving 2014 campaign.  Jastram told the Pollination Project, “With the continuing loss of habitat, the bees are in serious decline. I keep bees as a hobby, and have discovered a large amount of interest from rural land owners who would like to have bees on their property, but are fearful of them, so they are looking to others to place hives for them. That’s where I can help.”

Funds received will provide lumber for Jastram to build 20 beehives and place them around rural South Dakota to support the honeybee population. The Pollination Project awards $1,000 start-up grants to individuals and projects that promote compassion around the world.  The Pollination Project’s Daily Giving Community is a team of 40+ people who help provide the $1000 grants every day.  More information about The Pollination Project can be found at their website, http://thepollinationproject.org/.

New Laptops for DR Middle School

August 20, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Middle School recently purchased enough laptops so that every student in fifth through eighth grade would be able to be on a computer in their core classroom for the upcoming school year.

During the Dell Rapids School Board meeting on Monday, August 11th, Middle School Principal Fran Ruesink said, “We purchased enough laptops so that really any classroom that we’ve got for our core classes of 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th, they should be able to be one-on-one if they want to be with the combination of desktops and laptops right in the rooms.”

Ruesink also reported to the board that with the way that the Language Arts curriculum is going and the way that standardized testing requires an online performance, it’s something they felt was needed.

“None of those machines will go home, but the days of us going to the library for computer lab should be done.  Any classroom should be able to be up and going in five minutes or less,” said Ruesink.

The machines are already at the middle school, and technology staff are currently working to re-image the machines for school use.  The goal is to have the laptops ready for student-use by the time school starts on August 27th, or as soon as possible.

20 Years of Jr. Football Coaching

August 5, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

MoeLickteig-3“Moe, 20 years is amazing.  20 years of doing anything is amazing, but 20 years of being a positive influence on kids, that’s tough to beat,” said Mike Henriksen.

Henriksen’s opening remarks set the celebratory mood on Sunday, August 3rd, at Dell Rapids City Park for Moe Lickteig’s 20 years of Jr. Football coaching celebration.  Lickteig was surprised by family and friends with a party in the park to honor him.MoeLickteig-4

“I don’t do it for this…I don’t.  I do it for our program,” said Lickteig at the beginning of the evening.  Throughout the evening, family, friends, and former players enjoyed spending time thanking Lickteig for all the years he has spent coaching Jr. Football in Dell Rapids.  A thank you banner with hand-written thank yous was presented to Lickteig.  The rest of the time was spent reminiscing on past teams and viewing team photos.MoeLickteig-5

Lickteig has no sons of his own, but his daughter approached him with a piece of paper about South Dakota Jr Football with an interest in playing 20 years ago.  He allowed his daughter to play, and noted that she ended up being one of his best blockers over the years.  Lickteig helped coach that first year, and mentioned that all the other coaches were 4th-grade dads.  They looked at him to take over the next year, and he’s been coaching a team of 3rd and 4th-graders ever since.

“The kids.  The kids.  The kids.  The things they do, the things they say, the hard work they give you, that’s what I do it for,” said Lickteig.  His coaching philosophy over the years has been very simple.  He says, “Play hard and have fun.  You don’t want to do that, you might as well stay home.  Play hard and have fun.  The rest is going to fall into place.  Johnny wants to be a quarterback…well…Johnny you are going to have to try harder.  It just don’t come overnight.  You gotta work.  And they do.  It’s been that good.”

MoeLickteig-2

Lickteig also made it a point over and over again throughout the night that it’s not all about him.  “It’s not all because of me.  It’s my assistant coaches.  It’s my family that has allowed me to do this.  It’s all the parents.  I tell them at the beginning of the year this isn’t my team.  This is our team.”  He also thanked all of his sponsors throughout the 20 years.  “The support in this town is outstanding.  It’s that great.  When you go up and ask them…it’s gone up every year…but they don’t blink an eye.  Here you go Moe, here’s a check,” said Lickteig.

The full interview can be seen in the video.  Full-sized versions of the photos can be seen by clicking on the photos.
