Cardinal Season Ends in Hard-Fought Playoff Game

October 26, 2016 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

drsmvsorr_fb_10-25-16In an exciting, hard-fought South Dakota High School 9B playoff football game, the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders scored two late touchdowns to earn a 22-14 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Tuesday, October 25th, in Ramona.

The Cardinals scored first with 6:41 to go in the first quarter.  Dalton Houska scored on a two-yard run and also scored the two-point conversion to give St Mary an 8-0 lead.  Neither team scored again in the first quarter.

The Raiders tied the game with 10:42 to play in the second quarter.  Riston Wolf had a two-yard touchdown run, and Jamus Brown connected with Jeremiah Hoekman for the two-point conversion.  St Mary would take the lead at halftime as Garret Frost scored on a three-yard run as time expired in the second half to give the Cardinals a 14-8 lead.

Neither team scored in the third quarter as both defenses made key stops.  The Raiders forced two turnover-on-downs of the Cardinals in Raider territory.  Evan Brown came up with a big interception in the end zone late in the third quarter of a J. Brown pass to keep Oldham-Ramona/Rutland off the scoreboard.

The Raiders, however, would tie the game with 9:45 to go after a nine-yard run by Jacob Hegdahl.  The game-winning score for the Raiders came with 1:12 to play in the game when J. Brown connected with Hoekman for a 10-yard touchdown in the corner of the end zone on a fourth down play.

St Mary ends the season with a 3-6 record.
