Allen Talley

Allen TalleyAllen R. Talley, 80, formerly of Opal and Faith, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, surrounded by his loving family, at the Country Place Senior Living Center in Belle Fourche.

Allen Raymond Talley was born Jan. 20, 1934, to Harvey and Ida Mae (Scheeler) Talley at their ranch near Avance, Meade County, SD. He grew up on the Talley ranch with 13 brothers and sisters and at an early age began his love for ranch life and livestock. He attended the Howell rural school and later earned his G.E.D.

He married the love of his life, Ellen Palmer on August 8, 1953 in Sturgis and they began their life together on the “Cow Camp” of the Talley Ranch. In 1958, they moved three miles south to be closer to school. They raised their family of one son, Rolis, and three daughters, Sharon, Reena and Nancy, there and were active in the Opal Community. Al loved neighboring and helping his ranch friends with brandings, working the cattle and sheep and any social event taking place. He will be remembered as an easy going, loving man.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife of 61 years, Ellen of Belle Fourche; daughters, Sharon Priest of Dell Rapids, Reena (Dave) Veit of Buffalo, WY, and Nancy (Lynn) Miller of Mud Butte; daughter-in-law, Jan Talley of Pierre; sister, Thelma Healey of Rapid City; sisters-in-law, Edie Talley of Rapid City, and Arlene Beebe, Diamondville, WY; eight grandchildren, Regan (Levi) Kling, Danielle Priest, David A. (Brianne) Veit, Grant (Trish) Veit, Chancy (Jordan) Miller, Taylor, Shayna and Katy Miller; as well as six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and one hour before services at the church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at the First Wesleyan Church in Sturgis, with Pastors Harold Delbridge and Sam Cowles officiating. Interment will be at Bear Butte Cemetery, Sturgis, under the direction of Faith Area Memorial Chapel, Evanson Jensen Funeral Home, Faith.

Quarrier Volleyball Finishes 1-2 at Dak-12 Tourney

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team finished with a 1-2 record at the Dakota-12 Conference Volleyball Tournament at Elk Point on Saturday, October 18th.  SQuarriersioux Falls Christian won the conference tournament.  Dakota Valley finished second, and Madison placed third.

Dell Rapids opened up the tournament with a match against the West Central Trojans.  The Trojans defeated Dell Rapids by scores of 25-22, 25-13.  Tiffany Finkral finished the match with three kills, two blocks, and five digs.  Brittany Kludt added four kills.  Sarah Haak had 12 assists in the match.

In the second match, the Quarriers faced the Vermillion Tanagers.  The Tanagers defeated Dell Rapids by scores of 25-22, 25-17.  Haak had 14 assists and five digs in the match.  Megan Miles finished with five kills.  Shelby Wrage tallied seven digs.

Dell Rapids finished the tournament against Canton.  The Quarriers beat the C-Hawks 25-14, 25-23.  Arial Hoffman had five kills to lead Dell Rapids.  Finkral and Miles each had three kills.  Miles also had two service aces.  Kludt had two defensive blocks, and Haak finished with another 11 assists in the match.

Dell Rapids’ record now moves to 10-13 on the year.  The Quarriers will travel to Madison to face the Bulldogs on Tuesday, October 21st.

Quarrier Football Wins 6th Straight

DRHSvsTV_FB_10-17-14_3The Dell Rapids Quarrier football team earned their sixth straight win on a great defensive effort after defeating the Tri-Valley Mustangs 27-7 on Friday, October 17th, at Tri-Valley High School.

The Quarrier offense got off to a slow start to the game.  Dell Rapids only ran four offensive plays, with one of those plays a punt, in the entire first quarter.  However, the Quarrier defense did not allow any points in the first quarter.

Tri-Valley was able to push across a score with 11:17 to go in the second quarter on an 8-yard touchdown run by Nick Buchmann.  The extra point was good by DRHSvsTV_FB_10-17-14_2Sebastian Granzow, and Tri-Valley had a 7-0 lead.  Dell Rapids was finally able to put together a solid drive midway through the second quarter.  The drive was capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jase Nelson to Ben Gillogly with 3:23 left in the half.  The extra point was good by Keegan Hemenway, and the Quarriers tied the game at 7-7.  With under 2:00 to play, the Dell Rapids defense recovered a fumble deep in Tri-Valley territory, and the Quarriers turned it into six more points.  Riley Schmidt threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Riley Jurgensen with :27 left in the half to give Dell Rapids a 13-7 lead at halftime.

The Dell Rapids defense held strong in the second half giving up zero points.  The Quarrier offense was unable to score in the third quarter, but Schmidt scored on a 4-yard run one play into the fourth quarter.  The two-point conversion was no good, and Dell Rapids held a 19-7 lead with 11:55 to go in the game.  Schmidt DRHSvsTV_FB_10-17-14_1found the endzone again on a 56-yard run with 3:01 to go.  Nelson was able to find Hemenway in the endzone on a pass to convert on the two-point conversion to give Dell Rapids a 27-7 win.

Dell Rapids improves to 6-1 on the year.  The Quarriers will wrap up the regular season at home on Thursday, October 23rd, when they host the Vermillion Tanagers.

Quarrier Volleyball Falls to Sioux Falls Christian

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team lost in three games to the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers by scores of 25-11, 25-13, 25-12 on Thursday, October 16th, in Dell Rapids.

Tiffany Finkral led the Quarrier offense with 12 service points.  Brittany Kludt added four kills, and Kia Schumacher and Arial Hoffman each had three kills apiece.  Shelby Wrage finished the night with six digs for Dell Rapids.

The loss drops Dell Rapids to a record of 9-11.  The Quarriers will travel to Elk Point for the Dak-12 Conference Tournament on Saturday, October 18th.  Dell Rapids will open up the tournament against West Central at 9:00 a.m.

JV Results:
The JV team played their best volleyball of the season, but ended up falling to the Chargers two games to one by scores of 20-25, 25-19, 8-15.  Chloe Solberg had eight service points in the match.  Alyssa Shellum added six kills and one block.  Trinity Gordon and Hoffman each tallied four kills.  Hannah Welbig led the defense with seven digs, while Sami Reider finished with four digs.

C Team Results:
The C Team also fell to Sioux Falls Christian by scores of 25-22, 25-11.  Autumn Schumaker scored six points for Dell Rapids, and Betsy Amundson scored four points.  Sydney Cook finished the match with two blocks and four kills.  Ashley Lorenzen also had four kills.

Three Quarrier Cross Country Runners Qualify for State

QuarriersThree Dell Rapids Quarrier Cross Country runners qualified for the state during the Region 2A Cross Country Meet on Thursday, October 16th, in Garretson.  Both the girls and boys team participated in the region meet.

The Dell Rapids girls team finished 7th with 101 total points.  Madison won the girls team title with 20 points.  Garretson finished second with 35 points, and Flandreau was third with 53 points.  Shaylee Hoff and Aspen Hansen qualified for state individually for Dell Rapids by placing in the top 20 at the region meet.

The Quarrier boys team finished fourth with 86 points, just missing qualifying the entire team.  West Central finished first as a team with 24 points.  Garretson was second with 37 points, and Madison finished third with 58 points.  Zane Schumaker qualified for state individually by also placing in the top 20.

The State A Cross Country Meet will be held in Huron on Saturday, October 25th.  Big Sioux Media will have updates from the state meet for Hoff, Hansen, and Schumaker.

Deubrook Ends Quarrier Volleyball Win Streak

QuarriersLooking for their third straight win, the Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team lost to the Deubrook Area Dolphins on Tuesday, October 14th, in White.  The Dolphins beat the Quarriers by scores of 25-13, 25-13, 21-25, 25-18.

Brittany Kludt recorded nine kills in the match.  Tiffany Finkral added six kills.  Sarah Haak had seven aces and 20 set assists.  Shelby Wrage finished the night with 11 digs.

The Quarriers fall to 9-10 on the year.  Dell Rapids will host Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, October 16th.

JV Results:
The Dolphins came away with a 25-15 and 25-22.   Trinity Gross had six kills and five service points, and Chloe Solberg added seven service points.  Autumn Schumaker had four service points, while Sydney Stofferahn and Kenedy Mergen each smacked three kills.

Cardinal Cross Country Girls 2nd at Region 2B Meet

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals Cross Country teams participated in the Region 2B Meet held on Wednesday, October 15th, in Howard.

The Cardinal girls finished second in the region with 27 points.  Howard won the event with 17 points.  Hanson was third with 32 points, Chester Area fourth with 39 points, and Elkton-Lake Benton was fifth with 42 points.  Christina Vogel finished second individually for St Mary, just two seconds behind Ashlyn Deknikker of Lake Preston, who won the event.

The St Mary boys team finished sixth with 51 points.  McCrossan won the meet with 14 points.  Canistota was second with 34 points.  Baltic placed third with 38 points, Elkton-Lake Benton finished fourth with 41 points, and Oldham-Ramona/Rutland was fifth with 43 points.  Matt Farmer was the top finisher for the Cardinal boys team with a time of 19:07.80.

The State B Cross Country Meet will be held on Saturday, October 25th, in Huron.

Two Dell Rapids Teachers Receive Awards

NewDRLogoTwo Dell Rapids School teachers recently received awards for their outstanding work and efforts in the classroom.

Third grade teacher Karla Gruis was awarded the “General Education Teach of the Year” by New Directions Down Syndrome Association of Sioux Falls.  Nearly 200 families in South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, and northwest Iowa make up the membership of New Directions.  New Directions presented the award on September 20th at the annual Buddy Walk at Sertoma Park in Sioux Falls.  Gruis was recognized for her commitment to the education and inclusion of students with Down Syndrome, inclusive attitude and spirit, welcoming change in the classroom and willingness to adapt to student’s individual needs, as well as seeking out opportunities for the student to be included and maintain ongoing communication with the entire team.

High school science teacher Darwin Daugaard was also recently awarded this year’s South Dakota “Outstanding Physical Science Teacher of the Year” award sponsored by 3M Company and the South Dakota Science Teacher’s Association.  The award also came with $1,000 check for Daugaard to support his classroom efforts, purchase equipment, to aid in his continuing education, or allow him to share his expertise with his fellow teachers by providing travel funds.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins 5-Game Match

DRSM LogoThe match took five games to decide, but the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team defeated Estelline by scores of 25-22, 25-14, 12-25, 12-25, 15-10 on Monday, October 13th, in Estelline.

The Cardinals had three players end the night with 20 or more digs.  Ally Mullaney led the team with 29 digs.  Lindsey Wolles finished with 22, and Kaitlyn Vortherms had 20 digs.  L. Wolles also tallied 19 set assists in the match.   Mullaney pounded 11 kills, while Riley Wolles and Jackie Wolles each had six kills apiece.  Vortherms and Mullaney finished with six aces apiece as well.

The win moves the Cardinals’ record to 7-14.  St Mary will travel back to Estelline on Saturday, October 18th, for the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament.

Dell Rapids School Board Meeting: 10/13/14

The Dell Rapids School Board will meet in regular session on Monday, October 13th, at 7:00 p.m. in the MS/HS DDN Room.  Some of the items on the agenda include the approval of monthly bills, approval of open enrollment request, calendar discussion, request to extend school bus route, and the administrator/director reports.  The full agenda can be found by clicking here.
