Lorena (Halvorson) Berg

January 25, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Lorena BergLorena P. Berg, 79, of Garretson passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at her home. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 27, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson with the Rev. Steve Moberg officiating. Interment will be in the St. Paul Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home, Dell Rapids, on Sunday, January 26, 2014.  To leave condolences please visit www.kahlerfh.com.

Lorena Patrica Halvorson was born on January 1, 1935 in Vienna, SD to Bjarne and Edna Halvorson. She moved with her family to Dell Rapids when she was about 5 years old. She attended Dell Rapids School where she graduated in 1953.

Before she was married, she worked in the bakery in Dell Rapids, as a secretary at the Ford dealership, and the Cottage in Sioux Falls. After getting married and having kids, she became a dedicated stay at home mom for years. In 1985, she started working at Children’s Care Hospital and School as a child care worker for 17 years, which she took great pride in.

Lorena met Palmer Berg right out of high school and they married June 4th, 1955. Together they had a very strong loving relationship and raised six children. They endured a great deal of hardships and also had lots of happiness.  The two of them showed the true meaning of “Till death do us part” as mom held dad’s hand while he took his last breaths. They spent nearly 50 years together when he passed on April 10, 2004.
Lorena was a dear, loving, selfless person who did not let anyone get away without a hug.   After dad died she wasn’t sure she would be able to go on but she found purpose in worrying about everyone else.  With the love and support of her family she was able to find joy and peace in life again.

Her son, Paul, was diagnosed with cancer in 2009, she made it her mission to take care of him. She became an even stronger woman at this time. Her faith grew stronger though it was always extremely strong as she always showered us with prayers. Now she would use all her power to keep Paul strong. He passed away August 31, 2012.

She so dearly loved calls and visits from her kids, and if you put the grandkids on the phone…even the ones not talking….Grandma could talk to them for hours. Grandkids and great-grandkids were her pride and joy. One of her favorite songs was “Jesus Loves Me” and she loved it when her grandchildren sang it to her.

After Paul died she was frightened as this was the first time in her life she was alone.  She learned to adjust with the support of her loved ones.  For anyone who knows her there are pictures plastered everywhere in her house. She needed Dad and Paul there watching out for her all the time. Mom was a tough person and she always kept busy.

She had been coerced into joining the Garretson Red Hatters after dad passed away, which she enjoyed and talked about all the time. She was also a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson, SD. She took swim therapy at Sanford Wellness Center three days per week.  She took great joy in having her grandkids spend the night with her, when possible. Every time you came to visit her she had a big smile on her face. She was always up for a trip to town when offered. Mother was a very  warm hearted, loving lady who loved every one. She loved company and people!

She was preceeded by her husband, Palmer; son, Paul;  her parents, brother, Gerald; sisters, Alvera Ferris, Bernice Bokker, and Arlene Schildhauer.

She is survived by her children, Amy (Tracy) Kirk, and their children, Ruby, Vivian and Clarice;   David (Laura) Berg and their child, Trinity;  Patti (Dan) Stensland, and their children, NeVaeh, Andres and Aaliyah; Laura (friend, Tom) Boese, and children, Joel and Jay; Danny (Ellie) and their children, Dustin and Halie; her brother-in-law, Arnold Schildhauer, and many great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Rudy Becker

January 18, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Rudy BeckerRudy Roy Becker peacefully left this earth on January 15, 2014 following a courageous three year battle with cancer.

Rudy was born on October 31, 1950 to Art and Jeanette Becker. He grew up on the family farm north of Freeman near Silver Lake and was baptized at the Silver Lake Mennonite Church.  After attending one year of country school, Rudy continued his education at Freeman Elementary and Freeman High School. He furthered his studies by completing two years at Freeman Junior College.  Rudy married Rita Schrag on February 5, 1972 and they were blessed with two daughters, Kristi & Lori. They made their home north of Freeman for 41 years. Farming was his passion at an early age and continued until his health declined.

When Rudy wasn’t farming, he enjoyed all aspects of car racing – whether it be watching a NASCAR race, or racing his “Red Hot” Ford Fairlane at Thunder Valley. As the years went by, Rudy down shifted from racing fast cars to antique tractor pulling.  We saw the softer side of Rudy when he spent time with his granddaughter, Maddie Rose, who he affectionately called “Punkie.” Whether it be riding around the farm on the John Deere gator or dipping Oreos at the kitchen table, Rudy treasured these moments.

Waiting to greet him in Heaven are his parents, Art & Jeanette, numberous aunts and uncles and a handful of close friends.  He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Rita of Marion, SD; daughters, Kristi Becker (boyfriend Ron Hughes) of Sioux Falls, SD, Lori (Joe) and granddaughter Madeline Rose Stanford of Dell Rapids, SD, and many other friends and family.

Any memorials, not otherwise designated, will be directed to Sanford Hospice – Freeman.  Condolences may be left at www.walterfuneralhomes.org.

Walter Ellefson

January 12, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Walter EllefsonFuneral service for Walter Ellefson will be Wednesday at 11 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Pipestone. Interment will be in Lone Rock Cemetery, rural Flandreau. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 – 7 PM, with family present from 5 – 7 PM, prayer service at 7 PM, all at the Hartquist Funeral Home – Pipestone Chapel. To sign an online registry, please visit www.hartquistfuneral.com.
Walter Ellefson was born to Peter and Anna (Cherney) Ellefson on the family farm in Lone Rock Township, rural Flandreau, SD on February 21, 1929, during a raging blizzard. Dr. Walter Benjamin from Pipestone and his nurse took the train from Pipestone to Airllie where Peter met them with horses and a sleigh. The day after baby Walter was born, the neighbor, Harry Herbert, took the doctor and nurse back to Pipestone as Peter’s horses were exhausted. Walter attended grade school in the nearby Simons Country School, and later graduated from Egan High School. Walt’s father died when he was 11 years old. The family continued to live on the farm. Walt started working summers for his cousin, Willis Ellefson, when he was 13, giving all his wages to his Mother. He attended South Dakota State College in Brookings for one year on a scholarship from John Morrell. He then began farming with his brother, Quentin.

Walter married Carol Christensen on January 23, 1954, and they farmed the family farm for one year. Walt was then called to serve in the Army.  He served in A Battery 553 Field Artillery, 7th Army, stationed in Fort Sill, OK from February of 1955 to November of 1956. He was awarded the “Soldier of the Month” honor twice. Their son, Michael, was born while they were in Oklahoma. The family returned to Pipestone, MN and farmed nearby for three years. Their daughter, Diane, was born when they were on that farm. In 1960 they moved to the Johnson farm in Blinsmon Township, SD and in 1966 to the Stickel farm. In 1984 they moved to their new home on the family farm in Lone Rock Township. Walt enjoyed farming with his John Deere machinery, long hours in the field, raising hogs and sheep (sometimes), taking Mike and Diane in the truck with him to the Sioux Falls stockyards, helping them with 4-H livestock projects, and going to fairs with Mike. He grew Sokota seed corn for many years. After “retirement” he farmed with son until 2011. His interest in farming continued and he loved going for drives to see how the crops were progressing. He felt blessed to be able to do what he loved, to be a farmer, for so many years. It was very important to Walt that he was able to provide well for his family, to give his children the education they wanted and to pass on the legacy of the family land. Walt was baptized and confirmed in the Lone Rock Lutheran Church. He was a member and served in leadership positions of the Lone Rock church, then Messiah, Lone Rock Historical Church, and St. Paul Lutheran in Pipestone. Walt’s Christian Faith and values directed his daily life. He served his community in several capacities: as a 4-H leader in the Pleasant Valley Club, the Lone Rock Cemetery Board, the Township Board for Blinsmon & Lone Rock townships, and the school board for Blinsmon and Flandreau schools. He enjoyed serving on the Board of directors for Sioux Valley Energy for 30 years, and the SD Rural Electric Board for 8 years, also serving as an officer on both boards.

Walt died as the result of bladder cancer at the Dells Nursing and Rehab center in Dell Rapids, SD on Friday, January 10, 2014 at the age of 84 years, 10 months, and 20 days.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Michael (Jackie); daughter, Diane (Alan) Blankenfeld; grandchildren, Peter (Erica) Blankenfeld and their children Taelor and M’Kinleigh, Adam (Jovan) Blankenfeld, Carly (Jeremy) Hanson, Bryan Ellefson and Bethany Ellefson; nieces, Betty (Jerome) Haak, Barbara (Woody) Stahl and Judi (John)Hostler, and their families; and special friends, Dale, Merlyn, Brenda and Greta. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Gertrude Johnson and Gladys Cheney; and brother, Quentin.
