Arthur J. Nebben, 96, of Dell Rapids passed away peacefully Thursday, May 29, 2014. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Arthur Johan (John) Nebben was born Jan. 24, 1918 to Johannes and Anna (Haugen) Nebben on the Nebben family homestead southeast of Colman, SD. He attended Gale Ridge Country School through the 8th grade. He attended Colman High School until 1933. Due to the death of his father in 1929, he worked the family farm. Art served in WWII from Nov. 21, 1942 – Oct. 11, 1945 in the 163rd Signal Corp, United States 5th Army deployed to the Forward Operating Command in North Africa and Italy. After the war he returned to Colman and worked as a mechanic at Lone Tree Station, hauled cream and carried the US mail on the Star Route. He enjoyed dances and went to many barn dances, area dances halls and the Dells Pavillion, where he met Delores Maseman, marrying her June 19, 1950 at Luverne, MN. They made their home on the Maseman family farm near Dell Rapids where they farmed for 65 years, raising three children.

Art was a lifetime member of the George Fitzgerald Post 65 American Legion and had continuous membership for 68 years and the Dell Rapids VFW #10632. He served as Commander of the Legion, was Historian for over 35 years, was a member of the firing Squad, Post #129 40&8, Dells Sportsman’s Club and the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Art was elected to the Dell Rapids Bowling Hall of Fame. He raised purebred Hampshire hogs, receiving many awards at the fair. He was received the Soil Conservation Farm Award by the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce and Journal. He had a natural artistic talent so could paint or draw anything. He carved many Redwood signs around Dell Rapids for the Legion, Sportsman’s Club and Riverview Cemetery. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and shared in family vacations with his daughters, son-in-law and grandkids. Art could strike up a conversation with anyone and had a great ability for recalling historical events and his knowledge of history and facts were amazing to anyone that knew him. Even at the age of 95, he drove tractor and harvested. He read extensively, did word puzzles, watched “Wheel of Fortune” and always did the daily word “Jumble”. His favorite saying was “we’re making history every day.

In 2009 he went on the WWII Honor Flight to Washington DC, which was a highlight in his life. Many times one would see him wearing his Honor Flight cap around town. Art was instrumental in developing the Veterans Memorial Park in Dell Rapids.

Art passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014 at his daughter’s home in Dell Rapids surrounded by family. He was 96 years old and preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Lynn; brother, Olaf; 3 sisters, Annette Steinborn, Luella Knutson and Dorothy Plumme; daughter-in-law, Sally Nebben; sister-in-law, Darlene Park; uncle, Rudolf Haugen and cousins, Alfred and Arnold Hogan.

Art is survived by his wife, Delores; son, Jay Nebben; daughters, Jan Dybvig and Melanie (Lee) Burggraff, all of Dell Rapids; 5 grandchildren, Cody, Colt and Paige Burggraff and Peter John and Jennifer Nebben; 4 great-grandchildren, Kain Arthur John, Kasch John Joseph, Teagyn and Paislee Burggraff, all of Dell Rapids; brother, Palmer (Swede) Nebben, Colman; sisters, Hilda Johnson and Laura Knutson, Dell Rapids and Rosie Croon, Colman along with many nieces and nephews.

Madeline Haas

Madeline J. Haas, 83, of Rapid City, SD, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at the Golden Living Center Prairie Hills in Rapid City. Her funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. MST on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Rapid City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Madeline was born on April 14, 1931, the daughter of Ray and Ellen (Doyle) Haas. She moved with her parents to Dell Rapids for a short time before becoming a resident of the Golden Living Center in Rapid City.

She is survived by her nieces and extended family at the Golden Living Center Prairie Hills.

Joseph Slinger

Joseph W. Slinger age 92 of Pipestone, MN died Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the Pipestone County Medical Center. Services will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Pipestone. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Monday, May 26, 2014, also at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM, and continuing one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service in the church social hall, with burial to take place following the luncheon, at St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery in Woodstock, MN. Joseph William Slinger was born on November 27, 1921 to Henry and Elizabeth (Bult) Slinger on the family farmstead near Woodstock, MN in Chanarambie Township. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Woodstock and attended country school in Murray County.

On September 14, 1949 Joseph married Rose Ann Geraets at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dell Rapids, SD. After a spending his whole life farming, they retired into Pipestone in 2007. He will always be remembered by his family as a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, who enjoyed all aspects of his life on the farm, doing some carpentry work with his son, and playing the accordion.

On May 22, 2014 Joseph died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at the Pipestone County Medical Center, at the age of 92.

Joseph is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rose Slinger of Pipestone, MN; two daughters, Bibianna (Jim) Fehring of Shakopee, MN and Joanne (Dave) Petersen of Hardwick, MN; two sons, Gregory (Becky) Slinger of Cabool, MO and Larry (Bev) Slinger of Pipestone, MN; twelve grandchildren, Cheol, Chris and Kim Fehring, Robert and Richard Petersen, Karlee Teeters, Jenna Eaton, Cody, Shane, Kortney, Brianna and Andea Slinger; two great grandchildren, Kenzie and Kaydrien Slinger; two special nieces, Maria Alexander of Sioux Falls, SD and Cindy (Dayle) Filkins of Truman, MN; four sisters, Agnes Chapman, Helen Burkard, Margaret Slinger and Betty Staab; two brothers, Henry (Mary) Slinger and Bernard (Judy) Slinger; nieces, nephews and friends.

His parents, Henry and Elizabeth, four brothers, and two sisters preceded him in death.

Sister Martina Kueter

Sister Martina Kueter, 87, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died May 21, 2014, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen, SD.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Martina was held Saturday, May 24th, in Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Presentation Convent, Aberdeen.

Mary Doreen was born February 11, 1927 in Humboldt, SD, to Lenora (Kuborn) and William Kueter. She attended elementary and secondary schools in Humboldt, graduating from high school in 1945.

Doreen entered Presentation Convent September 8, 1949 and made her first profession of vows August 10, 1952. Sister Martina began her ministry in health care as an LPN at Presentation Children’s Home in Sioux Falls, SD. She also ministered in Pastoral Care at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD, and in domestic service in schools at Milbank, Mitchell and Dell Rapids. Sister also worked in Home Health Care, was a parish visitor and served as Local Director at Presentation Convent from 1994 to 2000, Sister Martina served in dietary at Bishop Robert Carlson’s residence in Sioux Falls, SD. She ministered to many people from 1945 to 2000 and then retired to Presentation Convent. Sister Martina lived at Avera Mother Joseph Manor from 2005-2014.

Sister Martina is survived by her community of Presentation Sisters, 5 brothers, Robert (Irene), Humboldt, SD, Edward, Hartford, SD, Charles, Hills, MN, Richard (Donna), Sioux Falls, SD, and William (Lorraine), LaPuente, CA; 3 sisters, Betty (Vincent) Ketcham, Sioux Falls, SD, Dorothy Ketcham, Parker, SD, Carol Stinehart, Sioux Falls, SD and many nieces and nephews.

Sister Martina is preceded in death by her parents, Lenora (Kuborn) and William Kueter and one sister, Patricia Clark.

Burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer Miller Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Allen Price

Allen L. Price was born on September 21, 1923 at Hartford, SD, the son of William and Lucy (Tvedt) Price. He grew up in the Hartford and Humbolt area and attended a country school through the eighth grade. He worked with his dad on the farm until 1943 whe he came to the Dell Rapids area to work on the Peters farm. He married Lucille Peters on October 10, 1959 in Dell Rapids. They made their home on the farm until they retired from farming in 1991. They then moved to their home near Dell Rapids and he helped David on the farm. Lucille passed away in 1996. Allen became a resident of Friendship Village in 2000 and a resident of Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in March of 2013.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, farm life and all his pet animals, playing cards and telling stories. He had a love for IH tractors that he passed on to his son and grandson. His smile and sense of humor will be missed by many.

Allen passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. He was 90 and preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

Those left to cherish his memory are his son, David (Julie) Price of Dell Rapids; his granddaughter, Holly (Zach) Overcashier of Farmington, MN; his grandson, Andy (Maggie) Price of Dell Rapids; his great granddaughter, Paityn; his brother, Ray (Sadie) Price of Colton and his sister-in-law, Dolores Price of Bellview, NE.

Robert “Bob” Smith

The funeral service for Bob Smith will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church in Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 26, 2014 at Kahler Funeral Home. The family will be present to greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and a Prayer service and time of sharing will begin at 4:00 p.m.

Robert “Bob” Smith was born on July 29, 1935 near Valley Springs, SD, the son of Richard and Clara Smith. He grew up in the Valley Springs area and graduated from Valley Springs High School in 1953. He attended SDSU before entering the U.S. Navy in 1954 during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge in 1958, Bob went to work for Bell Telephone. Bob married Marilyn Gapp on January 11, 1964 in Salem, SD. They lived in Jamestown, ND, Armour, SD, and rural Valley Springs, SD. Bob worked as an Electronics Technician for the U.S. Department of Energy until he retired in 1993. After selling their acreage, they moved to Sioux Falls, and then to Dell Rapids in 2001. Bob went to work selling homes for Schwebach Realty and was with them for eight years.

Bob passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at his home after a short illness. He was 78 and was preceded in death by his parents, his sister-in-law, Sharon Smith, and his son-in-law, Marvin Luke.

Bob was a member of the River Community Church in Dell Rapids and was a past member of the Ben Clare United Methodist Church. He was a former United Methodist Mens Conference President, an active member of Optimist Club International, and was on the ministry team for Lifestyle Relational Evangelism. Bob also made over 30 trips to Ft. Thompson doing mission work.

Bob loved life, people, and travel. He loved his family and had a strong influence in their lives. Always our rock… a solid force we could count on. He loved God and wanted to be used by the Holy Spirit. He made friends wherever he went, and knew which restaurant in town had the best pie! There was never a dull moment being with Bob! Learning to play bass guitar was his latest passion and he played in church as recently as two weeks ago. He told the nurse less than 24 hours before his death, “I guess I won’t be playing in church this Sunday.” Now he is in heaven worshiping the King of Kings. We will miss him greatly, but we are so thankful that he made a peaceful transition from this broken world into eternal life with his Lord and Savior.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marilyn of Dell Rapids; his three daughters, Sheila (Jeff) Howe of rural Valley Springs, Stacey (Bryan) McKee of Mountain Home, AR, and Sherri (Clint) Dobesh of Dell Rapids, SD; his brother, Stewart Smith of Valley Springs, SD; his eleven grandchildren, Keegan,Trevor, Nolan, Meara, Alex, Blake, Connor, Breona, Michael, Mallery, and Karley; and his three great-grandchildren, Bentley, Jaxxsyn, and Jedediah.

Doris (Feragen) Farrell

Doris Farrell, 92 of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at the Dow Rummel Retirement Village.

Doris H. Feragen, daughter of Thor and Helen (White) Feragen, was born on August 31, 1921, in Minot, ND. She moved to Sioux Falls at the age of 10 and attended school at Longfellow and Washington High School. Her last two years of high school were in Dell Rapids, SD, where the family had moved. She attended at South Dakota State University for two years and then worked in an office in Sioux Falls.

Doris was united in marriage with Robert W. Farrell on April 4, 1943, in Kingman, AZ, where Robert was stationed with the United States Air Force. The family lived in Sioux Falls after WWII until 1981, when they moved to Sun City, AZ. They moved back to Sioux Falls in 1995. Mr. Farrell preceded her in death in 1996.

Doris was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and belonged to the Wisdom Circle and Presbyterian Women. She worked at the “After School Program” and “Meals On Wheels”. Grateful for having shared her life are her three children, Tom (Sheryl) Farrell, Sioux Falls, SD, Richard Farrell, Tyngsborough, MA, Becky (Dan) Steele, Jackson, CA; brother Robert Feragen, Chicago, IL; sisters Betty Guthmiller, Menno, SD, Mary Carter, Sioux Falls, SD; 7 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and many other relatives and friends.Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter Nancy Petrich; brother Don Feragen; sisters Kay Millette and Eva Borrud.

Julie (Riswold) Posey

Juliette (Julie) Riswold Posey, 87, of Erick, Oklahoma was born on April 26, 1927 in Baltic, South Dakota to Alfred Ingemond and Bernice Josephine (Sundt) Riswold. Julie passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014, in Elk City, Oklahoma.

Julie married her best friend and sweetheart, Lloyd Kenneth Posey on May 29, 1971 in Flagstaff, Arizona. They made their home in California until they moved to Erick, Oklahoma in 1981. She worked in the medical profession for many years. Julie loved people and enjoyed taking care of them. That was her sweet nature. S he loved fishing and camping and would go a couple of times a year for two weeks at a time. Julie was a great fisherman. Julie will be remembered for being a devoted wife and mother.

She loved her church, the First Baptist Church of Erick, and was a faithful follower of the Lord. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 19, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Erick, Oklahoma. Brother Lance Whaley will officiate. Julie is survived by husband, Kenneth Posey of Erick, Oklahoma; son, Larry Ellefson of Big Clifty, Kentucky; daughters, Debra Thompson and her husband, Walter of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Kathy Frazier and her husband, Steve of Sayre, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Craig Ellefson of Costa Mesa, California, Greg Dutterer of Bullhead City, Arizona, Michael Dutterer of Costa Mesa, California, Scott Haller and Kris Haller both of Superior, Wisconsin, Keith Haller of Apple Valley, California; six great-grandchildren; sister, Inez Wilson of Dell Rapids, South Dakota. She is preceded in death by her son, Michael Posey, grandson, Kris Ellefson; brother, Earl Riswold; sister, Bernielle Riswold.

Mary Dressing

Mary E. Dressing, 85, died Thursday, May 8, 2014, at Touchmark at All Saints Retirement Community in Sioux Falls, SD. A funeral service will be 2:00 pm Monday, May 12, 2014, at George Boom Funeral Home, 3408 E. 10th St., with the family present one hour prior. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mary Ellen Klingel, the daughter of Oliver and Yola (Smalley) Klingel was born November 17, 1928, in Sioux Falls, SD. She graduated from Washington High School in 1946. On June 25, 1948, Mary was united in marriage with Edwin Dressing in Sioux Falls. The couple lived in Huron, SD for some time, before returning to Sioux Falls in 1960. Mary was a homemaker. Edwin died August 2, 1995.

On August 18, 2002, Mary was united in marriage with Arve Peterson in Humboldt, SD. Arve died in April of 2005.

Grateful for having shared her children, Nancy Bowden of Sioux Falls, Brian (Pam) Dressing of Sioux Falls, Mary Jamison of Dell Rapids, SD, Laura Dressing of Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Edwin Dressing and Arve Peterson; and a son, John Dressing.

Mary Ellen Scholten, age 63 of Rock Rapids, IA died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at the Avera Dells Area Hospital in Dell Rapids, SD.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1PM, Saturday, May 10th at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood, IA.Burial will follow at the Larchwood Cemetery in Larchwood, IA.
