Janet Gross

Janet (Turner) Gross, 78, of Sioux Falls, passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at the Dougherty Hospice House. Visitation will begin at 12 noon on Friday, September 17 at Kahler-Brende Funeral Home in Dell Rapids, with the family present from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Her funeral service will begin on Saturday morning, September 18 at 10:00 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Janet Elaine Turner was born on November 7, 1942 in Sioux Falls, the daughter of Charles (Eddie) and Mabel (Tystad) Turner. She grew up in Dell Rapids and graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1961.

After graduation, she attended business school in Omaha and then moved to Minneapolis where she worked at a bank. She returned to Sioux Falls where she started a family and worked various jobs throughout the years. She retired from Balance Systems where she had been employed for several years.

The joy of Janet’s life was her husband Pete, whom she married on August 31, 1996. Janet had a big heart and never had a bad word to say about anyone. She loved the color pink, Elvis Presley, and TV Westerns. She was happiest spending time with her family and traveling with her husband Pete to meet her “Cowboys”.

Janet is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Peter (Pete) Gross; her children Troy (Becky) Mielitz, Tammy (Greg) Young, Kandice (Steve) Coomes, Todd Mielitz, and Melissa (Willie) Tschetter, all of Sioux Falls; her 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild; her siblings Rose (Tom) West, Chuck (Jane) Turner, Paula (John) Murray; 3 nephews, 1 niece, and several great nieces and nephews.

Jon Thomas “Tom” Jones

Jon Thomas “Tom” Jones, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran of Mount Vernon passed away at the age of 80 from a brain aneurysm on August 26th. His Memorial Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 10, 2021 at Kahler-Brende Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be one-hour prior to the start of the service. Inurnment will be in the Hills of Rest Cemetery, Sioux Falls. www.kahlerfh.com

Tom was predeceased by his parents, Lloyd and Amy Jones; sister, Barb Schmidt; and daughter, Debbie Soulek. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Jones; daughter, Julie (Steve) Stofferahn of Dell Rapids; stepdaughter, Lisa LeMond; stepson, Austin LeMond; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Marilyn Pearce

Marilyn Pearce, 97, of Okemos, MI passed away on August 26, 2021. After a private remembrance, she will be inurned in the Dell Rapids cemetery near her mother, sister and her Olsen ancestors. www.kahlerfh.com

Marilyn was the daughter of Frederick Martini and Gladys Martini (formerly Olsen), both of Dell Rapids. Marilyn grew up in Dell Rapids and was valedictorian of the 1941 Dell Rapids High School class. She next studied music at Augustana College and later Northwestern University where she met her future husband, Frederick Pearce. They married soon thereafter and moved to Lake Linden Michigan where they raised their family.

Marilyn loved music and was a gifted singer. She continued to study and perform during most of her long life. She also enjoyed genealogy and was always eager to uncover details of her Olsen roots in Denmark and Germany where she travelled to find municipal and church archives.

Marilyn’s husband passed in 1988, but she is survived by her four children: Margery Wakefield, Charles Pearce, John Pearce, and Joann Davis. She was also the loving grandmother of 5 and the great-grandmother of 6.

Clarice Tebbe

Clarice (Splonskowski) Tebbe, 86, of Colton, SD died on August 23, 2021 at Bethel Nursing Home in Madison SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 28 at St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church at Huntimer. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Friday, August 27 at Kahler-Brende  Funeral Home in Dell Rapids, with a Christian Wake Service at 5:00 pm. www.kahlerfh.com

She was born on a farm in Marion, SD on October 5, 1934 to Charles and Marcella Splonskowski. She was the youngest of 8 children. She attended country school through 8th grade. On the way home she would take off her shoes and walk barefoot, often losing a sock. She graduated from Marion High School in 1952. After high school she took the train to Long Island, NY, where she lived with her older brother and wife. Eighteen months later she moved back to Sioux Falls and lived with several girlfriends. She met Merlin Tebbe at the Arkota ballroom in Feb 1955, where they learned they had the same birthday. Merlin and Clarice were married on November 22, 1955. They farmed in Colton their entire married lives, while raising 9 children. In 1969 they lost baby Kenneth at three weeks of age. Clarice volunteered at Sanford Hospital for 21 years in the pediatrics unit, comforting babies and children, which she loved doing. Merlin and Clarice enjoyed dancing at the Moose Lodge and took many bus trips with their friends. She liked gardening and canning, genealogy, playing cards, golf and dominoes. She sewed many of her children’s clothes and made baby quilts for her grandchildren when they were born. She exercised by walking at least 4 miles five days a week for years. She was happiest surrounded by her kids and grandkids.

Grateful for having shared her life is her husband, Merlin Tebbe; her children Dorene Wernke (Alan), Dean Tebbe, Wayne Tebbe, Charlene Francis (Drew), Larry Tebbe (Ruth), Lisa Drugan (Eric), Amy Tebbe, Jana Schmitz (Rick) and a sister, Mary Ground. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.

Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society.

Lucas Kruger

Lucas “Luke” Kruger, 42, of Freeman, passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2021 at Sanford USD Medical Center after injuries he sustained in a car accident. His funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 in Trinity Lutheran Church at Tea, SD. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 16, 2021 in the church. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. www.kahlerfh.com

Lucas “Luke” Fredrick Kruger was born on January 20, 1979 at Dell Rapids, SD, the son of Gus and Marie (Schildhauer) Kruger. He lived with his family in Trent until they moved to Dell Rapids in 1986. He attended Dell Rapids School and graduated from DRHS in 1997. He then attended SDSU for one year before graduating with an Associate Degree in HVAC from Southeast Tech. He worked for ESI, Mulder Refrigeration, Haugan Heating and Air Conditioning, G and R Controls, Climate Systems and TAB Inc. He married Kelley Knock on October 11, 2008. The couple made their home in Tea, SD. In 2010 their daughter, Chloe was born. The family moved to Freeman in 2019 where he was residing at the time of his death.

Luke was an avid outdoorsman. Fishing, hunting and camping were not only his hobbies but his passion. He loved camping with his family at Myrtles Campground. Every weekend, you could find him fishing off of Cow Patty Bay on the Missouri River. The river was his second home.

Luke is survived by his wife, Kelley of Freeman, his daughter, Chloe of Freeman; his parents, Gus and Marie Kruger of Dell Rapids; his sisters, Lisa (Mike) Westberg of Sioux Falls, Lori (Joe) Kappler of Baltic and Leslie (Dan) Hisken of Marshall, MN; his father-in-law, Arlon Knock of Tea; his brothers-in-law, Matt Knock of Tea and Tom (Kristen) Knock of Alcester and his many nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. He will also be greatly missed by his four legged companion, Shadow.

A memorial fund will be established for Chloe’s future education.

Julia Blue

Julia (Geraets) Blue, 59, of Sioux Falls, passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at the Dougherty Hospice House. Her Memorial Mass will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 27, 2021 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Julia Grace Geraets was born on March 25, 1962 in Dell Rapids, SD, the daughter of Clarence and Helen (Bohnenkamp) Geraets. She grew up on the family farm west of Dell Rapids and attended school at St. Mary. She  graduated from St. Mary High School in 1980. After high school Julia worked various jobs. She married Richard Blue Sr. in 1994. The couple made their home in Vermillion where they owned and operated Little Italy’s Pizzeria. After the restaurant, the couple moved to Sioux Falls where Julia remained until the time of her death.

She enjoyed her family, flowers and tending to her garden. Julia was a loving daughter, wife, mother, sister but her largest passion was her grandchildren. She was always very supportive of the community of Vermillion and was known for her generosity and big heart.

Julia is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, John, Joe and Jay and her brothers-in-law, Darrell Ordal, Roger Mines and Greg Spangler.

She is survived by her husband, Richard “Rick” Blue Sr. of Sioux Falls; her step-children, Rick Jr (Brenda) Blue of Freeman, Robyn (Doug) Cummings of MN, Christina (Dave) Gillies of Yankton, Michael (Brooke) Blue of Sioux Falls and Casey (April) Blue of Vermillion; her 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; her siblings, Jerome (LaVonne) Geraets of Dell Rapids, Jean Mines of AZ, Judy (Shawn) Parcell of NE, Janet Ordal of Carson City, NV, Jennifer (Don) Huwe of Dell Rapids, Joyce (Chuck) Selland of Chamberlain, Jeff (Tammy) Geraets of Brandon, Joan Spangler of AZ, June (Randy) Huewe of IA and Jackie (Jeff) Rauh of Carson, City, NV; her sisters-in-law, Yvette Geraets of Sioux Falls, Julie (Steve) Stofferahn of Dell Rapids, Anita Buckmaster of Sioux Falls and Marvalee (Don) Ulrich of Iroquois; and her many nieces nephews and many friends.

Richard Lewis

Richard M. Lewis, 64, of Trent, passed away on Friday, July 30, 2021 at his home. His Memorial Service will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at Kahler-Brende Funeral Home. www.kahlerfh.com

Richard was born January 21st, 1957 in Fort Ord, California. His parents were Ira J. Lewis (Father) and Rosemarie Madril Lewis (Mother). Richard was raised in a military family which allowed him the opportunity to call multiple locations home while growing up and following his father’s career. After high school, Richard married Virginia Ruth Boney who blessed him with his first Son, Jason. Richard later married Carol Anne Gallagher who blessed him with two more Sons, Ryan and Matthew. Richard and Carol were married for 18 years before divorcing in 1998. Richard was employed for 20 years by Chevron Refinery in Richmond, California prior to moving to Trent, South Dakota in 2005. He resided in Trent until the time of his passing. Richard is preceded in death by his Parents and 2 Grandchildren.

Richard was an avid fisherman who spent a lifetime passing on his fishing knowledge to his three children. Richard was also a talented artist who enjoyed drawing houses and landscapes, using pointillism at times to portray depth and detail. When Richard wasn’t fishing or drawing, he could be found in his music studio playing the drums or his bass guitar. He enjoyed playing music with his close family and friends.

Richard is survived by his three Sons, all of which reside in California. Jason his eldest, is married to Megan and has two children Jaxon and Alana. Ryan his second child, has Reagan and Ryker. Matthew the youngest Son, has Behnjamin and Maddison. Richard is also survived by his siblings Bob and Angie Lewis of Trent SD, Shawn and Daniel Richardson of Fairfield CA, and David and Lori Lewis of Imperial CA.

Cathryn Williamson

Cathryn Williamson, 74, of Crooks, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2021 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Kahler-Brende Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. Cathryn Ilene Clemans was born on May 21, 1947 at Osmond, NE, the daughter of Donald and Jean (Wiedman) Clemans. She grew up and attended school in Plainview, NE. After school she worked multiple jobs while raising her children. She moved to Dell Rapids in 1976. She married Darrell Williamson on May 26, 1979 at the Methodist Church in Dell Rapids. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids for twenty years. Cathryn worked in facilities for the Dell Rapids School District, Augustana College and retired from the Children’s Inn. Darrell and Cathryn moved to Crooks in August of 2002.

She enjoyed her family and her arts and crafts. She liked flowers, sewing, puzzles and cheering for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Bill and her sister, Jackie.

Cathryn is survived by her husband of 42 years, Darrell of Crooks; her children, Tammy (Terry) Westover of Dell Rapids, Daniel (Dorothy) Fulton of Sioux Falls, Freddy Nielsen of Brookings, Melissa Edwards of Madison and James Williamson of Sioux Falls; her 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and her extended family and friends.

Diane Rogers

Diane K. Rogers, age 74, of Dell Rapids, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 3, 2021, at her home in Dell Rapids. A memorial gathering with family will be held from 5:00-6:30 PM Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids. Interment will follow at approximately 7:00 PM at the Trent (Sunny Side) Cemetery in Trent, SD.

Diane was born in Madison, SD, on December 10, 1946, to Louis and Viola (Kahl) Gednalske. She attended school in Dell Rapids and continued her education by attending community college in Sioux Falls where she earned a degree in accounting. Throughout her life, Diane held a variety of jobs, but primarily she dedicated her life to being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She welcomed her children’s friends as well and looked after them as her own. Diane loved gathering with family and sharing a never-ending supply of hugs.

Diane had several talents and hobbies, and many of them allowed her to enjoy time with her family and friends. Diane loved to bowl and play horseshoes, pool, darts, bingo, cards, and board games. She was also a talented painter, possessing a natural gift of making objects look unbelievably real. Diane was always up for a cup of coffee or a road trip. She liked to travel and for years, Diane would ride the bus and then fly to Texas to stay with family. Diane took pride in her home and her yard, insisting on keeping up with the yardwork and gardening. During the week of her passing, she insisted on pruning her rose bush and cleaning the stones in her fairy rock garden. Diane had a firecracker personality but was also very sweet, with a warm, glowing smile that brightened the room. Once Diane was diagnosed with cancer, she did not fear death because she knew she would soon be with her son Otey.

Survivors include her children: Tammy (Steve) Wendell, Trent, Lisa (Jeff) Nielsen, Trent, Merry (special friend Chuck) Rogers, Sioux Falls, Kenny (fiancé Chloye) Rogers, Sioux Falls, and Ann (Dan) Schmidt, Sugar Land, TX; grandchildren: Jerica (Nick) Johnson, Jace Blair, Jordon Rogers, Jasmine (Logan) Cochran, Daniell Rogers, Tyler Sparks, Michael Schmidt, and Andrew Schmidt; great grandchildren: Isabelle, Emmett, and Glaydon; brothers: LeRoy Gednalske, Flandreau, Ron (Jean) Gednalske, Harrisburg; and sisters-in-law: Bette, Janice, and Jackie Gednalske.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Otey Rogers; and brothers: Richard, James, and Robert Gednalske.

Jay Nebben

Jay Arthur Nebben, age 69, of Dell Rapids, passed away unexpectedly at his home of natural causes on Friday, July 2, 2021. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Friday, July 9, 2021, at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Interment will follow in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM Thursday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids, with the family present from 5-7:00 PM. Jay Arthur Nebben was born October 11th, 1951 to Arthur and Delores (Maseman) Nebben, in Dell Rapids, SD. Jay was baptized in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. He attended school in Dell Rapids, graduating in 1969. Jay enlisted in the United States Navy in 1969 and served until 1973. He was an electrical aviation mechanic onboard the USS Constellation stationed in the Philippines. He was discharged on October 11th, 1973. He farmed with his dad on the family farm. He graduated from Dakota State College with a respiratory therapist degree and started working at the Dell Rapids Hospital in 1983, where he was employed for thirty-eight years.

Jay met his wife Sally Leuning on a blind date and they were married June 9, 1990 at Hendricks, Minnesota. They made their home in Dell Rapids and were married for twenty-three years. They were blessed with two children Peter and Jenny.  Sally passed away on October 11, 2013.  Jay was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. He was an “EMT” for the Dell Rapids Ambulance and taught many classes, training others. He taught “safety town“ for kids and brought his dalmatian “Detour” with him for all to enjoy.  Jay was a member of the Dell Rapids Legion Post 65 and the Dell Rapids Firing Squad. He was a legion commander and he and his father Art were instrumental in starting the Veterans Memorial Park. Jay was very proud to have served his country and continue the military heritage of his father.  Jay was a sports enthusiast, he bowled in a league in Dell Rapids and played American Legion baseball for Dell Rapids as the pitcher, and they won the state championship in 1969. He could often be found telling stories at almost all of the many football, basketball, track and baseball games that he attended. He also loved to attend his son Peter’s football games and weightlifting competitions and his daughter Jenny’s volleyball games.  He was on the Dell Rapids Township board, a member of the historical society and promoter of the Dells Rapids Museum. He loved antiques, history, and photography. Jay could tell you the history and facts on just about anything around Dell Rapids and the area.   Jay enjoyed hunting and reading, especially books about World War II, farm sales, and old farm equipment. He raised livestock and continued to farm on the family farm until his death.  Jay made many friends in the community and through his work, and always made sure to attend weddings, funerals, birthdays, and social events, when at all possible. He always had a helping hand for anyone who needed it, and paid visits to friends and family in nursing homes and hospitals. He delivered coffee and treats to the nurses at the hospital every morning and had coffee at the Dell Rapids Elevator where he and his friends caught up on the daily news around town. He cherished his two grandchildren and would take them to see the new calves in the spring.   Jays warm smile and stories will surely be missed in the Dell Rapids community.

He is survived by his children: Peter (Sydney) Nebben and Jennifer (Jesse Lobdell) Nebben, grandchildren: Jason and Jayda Lobdell; sisters: Jan Dybvig and Melanie Burggraaff of Dell Rapids; brother-in-law, Garry Leuning of Hendricks, MN; sister-in-law, Janelle (Bill) Bittner of Crooks; aunts, Hilda Johnson of Dell Rapids, and Rosie Croon of Colman; and uncle, Palmer Nebben of Sioux Falls; and several nieces and nephews and many cousins.  Jay was preceded in death by his wife Sally Nebben, father Art Nebben, mother Dee Nebben, infant brother Lynn Nebben, grandparents Joe and Pearl Maseman and John and Anna Nebben; father-in-law Howard “Hoot” Leuning, mother-in-law Phyllis Leuning, and a brother-in-law Dean Leuning.
