Rick Craig

Rick Craig, 42, of Trent, SD passed from this world at 11:05 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Sanford Health surrounded by family. His Celebration of Life Service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Quarry Rock Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Rick Lee Craig was born on January 1, 1974 at Norfolk, NE, the son of Randy and Barb (Jakobosky) Craig. He grew up in Norfolk, NE and attended school in Norfolk. He graduated high school in 1992. He owned his own business “ExperTint.” It started as a mobile tinting and car stereo installment and then grew. He owned his business for six years. He moved to Trent, SD to be closer to family. He was a contractor with Mobile Works and enjoyed working with John. He was on the Norfolk, NE and Trent, SD Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed it, but had to give it up because of back problems. He loved to run. He worked with the Life Leadership Development. After high school, Rick continued to learn. He loved educating his mind and helping others learn. He is a very loving, caring, son; brother; uncle; and friend to many.

He is an active member of Quarry Rock Church. Rick is known for his sense of humor, his faith, his honesty, his dedication, his love for family and friends, and his love for music and singing and rejoicing in our Lord. Rick may be gone from this world, but his legacy and friendships will still be alive and remembered. He has a special bond with all his nephews and nieces. He is Godfather to Addysen (whom they had a special bond only the two of them understood, we knew it but he admitted it and said no one could take that away). Godfather also to Keller Pohlman (Jodi and Darren Pohlman). He has touched and influenced thousands of lives before, during, and now after the illness and his death. His new life begins with our Lord and Savior, which he was so ready to be with.

Those left to cherish his memories are his parents, Randy and Barb Craig of Trent; his brother, Brian (Kathy) Craig and nephew, Chad Craig and niece, Delany Craig of Omaha, NE; his sister, Tracy (Jim) Jensen and nieces, Hannah and Addysen Jensen of Trent; his best friend and brother from another mother, Milt (Maddie) Borah “The two Amigos” of Beaver Creek, MN; and many, many friends and family that he has touched throughout his life! He has been a great listener and above all mentor. Now he will be a mentor in Heaven. Rick was always good a being a public speaker. Now he will have an even bigger audience. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Alvin and Mildred Craig; aunt, Susan Rocker; cousin, Scott Roker, aunt, Ginger Mead and his dog, Maxie.

Maedora Hoff

Maedora Hoff, 78, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2016, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 2 at Canton Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-8 p.m., family present from 6-8 p.m., at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton. On-line condolences may be left at Anderson Funeral Home.

Maedora Lenora Hoff was born March 20, 1938 to Theodore and Lenora (Pietz) Krueger in Tripp, SD. Maedora graduated from Tripp High School and attended Wartburg and Augustana Colleges. She married Harlan Hoff on August 21, 1960 in Tripp, SD. The couple moved to Dell Rapids, SD then to Canton, SD where they lived for the next 50 years and raised their three children. Throughout those years, Maedora worked at the Souvignier Sales Barn and Farmers State Bank.

Maedora found great joy in supporting and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She was also known for her love of shopping with her family. Maedora participated in Pallathene and volunteered at the Avera Heart Hospital in her retirement.

Grateful for sharing her life are loving husband of over 55 years Harlan Hoff; children: Sherry Larson (Tom Schmidt) of Sioux Falls, SD; Steve Hoff (Jeanne) of Dell Rapids, SD; and Sheila Etrheim (John) of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren: Tyler Larson (Lindsey Kuehl), Bryant Larson (Chandra), Garrett Hoff, Corynn Hoff, Shaylee Hoff, Brody Etrheim, Megan Etrheim, Elise Etrheim, and Griffin Etrheim; sister Sandra Hauser of Lafayette, IN; and many other family and friends. Maedora was preceded in death by her parents; niece, Barbara Hauser; nephew, Jimmy Hauser; brother-in-law, Garry Hauser; and sister-in-law, LuAnn Hoff.

Jerry O’Brien

Judy (Shefte) Van Dam

Judy Lynn Van Dam, 57, of Montrose, lost her short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on April 15, 2016 at Avera McKennan Hospital. Funeral mass was held on Friday, April 22, 2016 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Montrose. On-line condolences may be left at Kinzley Funeral Home.

Judy Shefte was born August 18, 1958 to Kenneth and Delores (Quam) Shefte in Dell Rapids, SD. She grew up on a farm near Dell Rapids and moved to town where she worked with her family at the Shefte Cafe in Junior High. She attended and graduated from Dell Rapids Public School.

On June 16, 1978, Judy married her best friend Floyde Van Dam in Dell Rapids. Floyde and Judy were blessed with two daughters and nearly 38 years of marriage. She was employed at Canistota Good Samaritan for the last 14 years as of April 8, 2016.

Judy is known for her caring heart, kindness and patience. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and St. Patrick’s Altar Society, where she served as Vice President and currently President. She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, sewing, and doing crafts. Judy also loved spending time with her 3 grandsons outside, in the garden, and baking.

She is survived by: her husband, Floyde of Montrose; two daughters, Jill (Dan) McMurtrey of Winner and Stacy Van Dam of Overland Park, KS; three grandchildren, Hayden, Clay, and Ethan McMurtrey; mother, Delores Shefte of Dell Rapids; brothers and sisters, Karen (Dean) Skatvold, Bonnie Ahlers, Gail (Mark) Gannon, Jean (Mike) Bauman, Stuart (Kim) Shefte, and Kevin (Laura) Shefte; mother-in-law, JoAnn Van Dam; and 20 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Shefte, brother-in-law, Frank Ahlers, father-in-law, Nick Van Dam, and several aunts and uncles. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer to make a contribution in memory of Judy to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to assist other families facing this devastating disease

David Sommerfeld

David A. Sommerfeld, 75, of Dell Rapids died Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. On-line condolences may be left at Minnehaha Funeral Home.

David Arthur Sommerfeld was born October 31, 1940 in Clarkfield, Minnesota, to Arthur and Adeline (Hartfiel) Sommerfeld. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from Boyd High School, Boyd, Minnesota in 1958. He worked as a part time teller & part time janitor at State Bank in Boyd, Minnesota, drafted into the US Army in 1963, honorably discharged in 1965. He then worked at Northwestern National Bank in Dawson before transferring to Northwestern National Bank in Sioux Falls in 1969, and to the Dell Rapids branch in 1974. He was Loan Officer, Assistant Manager & Manager before transferring to Credit Review in Sioux Falls in 1995, and worked there until his retirement in 2003. In 2005 he reentered the workforce at Metabank in Sioux Falls for 3 years.

He met Margo Sorensen while working at Northwestern National Bank in Sioux Falls in 1969, and they were married June 6, 1970. They lived in Sioux Falls for 4 years before making their permanent home in Dell Rapids.

David was a member of the Dell Rapids Ambulance Service for 20 years, served on the Dell Rapids City Council for 17 years, Optimist Club, Lions Club, Ducks Unlimited and Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and traveling with his family and friends. But his number one passion was anything to do with his grandchildren and tried to never miss one of their events.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 46 years, Margo, son, Nathan & wife Sarah, & Children Bryce & Leah, of Dell Rapids, son Mathew & wife Shelly & children Chase & Kayla, of Tea. A Sister, Opal & Husband Don Lynne of Bloomington, Minnesota, Mother-in-Law, Phyllis Sorensen of White Lake, Sister-in-law Kris Kieffer & husband John of White Lake, and many nieces & nephews and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Art & Adeline Sommerfeld, his niece, Michelle Lynne, Father-in-law, Anker Sorensen, His special friends, Margo’s Grandparents, Ted & Doris Scott.

Delores (Penning) Burggraff

Dolores M. Burggraff, 91, of Egan, SD, passed away Sunday, April 17, 2016 at Riverview Healthcare Community, Flandreau, SD. Dolores Marie Penning was born January 4, 1925 at Dell Rapids, SD to Nicholas and Elizabeth (Kirpes) Penning. She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Dell Rapids and attended General Beadle State Teachers College (DSU), earning a degree in education. After securing her first teaching job at Monroe, she later taught at the South Dakota School for the Deaf, inspired by her brother, Nick, who was a student there.

Entertaining a love for old time music and polka dancing, Dolores met Henry Burggraff at the Arkota Ballroom in Sioux Falls, later marrying him June 2, 1954 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. This was a double ring ceremony which included her sister, Alice, and Henry’s brother, Joseph. The couple made their home near Egan after initially residing briefly at Hartford and at Ward.

Eight children were raised from this union of 61 years. Being an active leader in the community, Dolores was president of the Egan PTA and a member of the Egan School Board, serving as president many years. Besides education being important to Dolores, equally so was her dedication to her Catholic faith. She was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church of Flandreau where she was Director of Religious Education of the CCD program and indulged in her passion of presenting the Christmas Tableau programs. As a member of Court Our Lady of Peace Catholic Daughters, she again shared her leadership skills by serving several terms as Regent. Catholic Daughter members across the state were kept abreast of the happenings through her Catholic Daughter Newsletter which won several state awards. She loved decorating for holidays and did so annually at the Catholic Daughter Bazaar where she was well-known for her contributions of home canned dill pickles. She also volunteered at Riverview Manor, decorating the bulletin boards monthly for the residents to enjoy. Another activity bringing joy to the residents was the development of a rhythm band. Dolores, of course, wrote the arrangements, and on a regular basis, conducted the “orchestra” of resident “musicians”. Even though she did not know how to swim, she felt everyone else should. For a time, she was the Moody County Red Cross Water Safety Chairman. Dolores delighted in attending the performances, games, and events of her children and grandchildren. The influence of her support for involvement and her generous spirit continues on into a third generation. However, without a doubt, baking bread was her specialty as all involved can attest to!

Dolores is survived by her husband Henry, eight children, Marilyn (Kalvin) Mead, Shelton, NE, Frank (Lynda) Egan, SD, Lonnelle (Keith) Rasmussen, Newman Grove, NE, Wayne (Sandy), Volga, SD, Lloyd (Lori), Union, NE, Karon (John) Tassava, West Fargo, ND, Gordon and Glenn (Jackie) both of Egan, SD, 21 grandchildren, 9 spouses of grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, five siblings, Melvin (Jeanette) Penning, Dell Rapids, Alice Burggraff, Colton, Terry (Sharen) Penning, Sioux Falls, Vera (Bernard) Burggraff, Hartford, Karon Penning, Eagleville, TN. Dolores was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings, Vern, Bernice, Elmer, Gary, Loren, Nick, Connie and Maxine.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5 – 7 p.m. Wednesday at Skroch Funeral Chapel with a 7 p.m. scripture service followed by a Catholic Daughter Rosary. On-line condolences may be left at Skroch Funeral Home.

Douglas Carlson

Douglas Carlson, 50, died at Brookings Health Center on Thursday, April 7, 2016.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St Thomas Aquinas Church in Madison with the Rev DeWayne Kayser officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery. There will be a parish scripture service at 5 p.m. on Sunday at Weiland Funeral Chapel in Madison. On-line condolences may be left at Weiland Funeral Chapel.

He was born on Nov. 6, 1965 at Madison to Dale and Helena (Klinkhammer) Carlson. In 1971, he moved to Custer State Hospital and in 1996 he moved to Advance in Brookings where he lived until his death.

He is survived by two brothers, Greg of Dell Rapids, Keith (Patti) of Okeene, Okla., and one sister, Susan Carlson of Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Chris Gandee

Chris M. Gandee passed away suddenly April 7, 2016 at his home after a lengthy illness. Chris was born October 17, 1984 at Oberlin, OH. In 1986 his family moved to Sioux Falls, SD and to Dell Rapids, SD in 1991. He received his early education in Dell Rapids and then was home schooled when his family moved to Ward, SD in 2001 and graduated from high school in 2003. Chris married Rebecca Townsend in July 2010. He did factory work and general construction up to the time of his death.

Chris is survived by his children: Lynzie Townsend, and Skyler Glenn, granddaughter, Amara Mae Ham, special friend, Rachel Nies, parents, Tom and Cyndi Jorgensen, Ward, siblings, Bryan Jorgensen, Dalton, GA, Brandon (Jenny) Jorgensen, Eldon, MO, Rachael Jorgensen, Ward, Mike Smith, Russell Smith, Emily Pitts, all of Ohio, and his grandmother, Mary Jorgensen, Ward. Chris was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Herman and Irene Gandee and his paternal grandparents, Ron Jorgensen and Chuck and Carol Smith.

Services will be 11:00 am Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at First Baptist Church, Elkton with burial in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 pm Monday, April 11, 2016 with a 7:00 pm prayer service at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau. On-line condolences may be left at Skroch Funeral Chapel.

Delores “Dee” Culhane

The Funeral Service for Delores “Dee” Culhane will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday in Kahler Funeral Home and the family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A time of sharing will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Delores Evans was born on February 20, 1932 at Brookings, SD, the daughter of Lewis and Blanche (Swedlund) Evans. She grew up in Flandreau and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1950. Dee married Doug Culhane on March 24, 1952 in Flandreau. They made their home in Flandreau, Elk Point, and Wall before moving to Dell Rapids in 1970. She worked at George’s Menswear before she went to Kahler Furniture Store. After the furniture store closed, she worked at Fashion Corner, Trustworthy Hardware, and True Value. She retired to take care of her great-grandchildren in 2005.

Dee passed away on Friday, April 8, 2016 at the Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Doug in October of 1987.

Dee has had a special friendship with Don Knutson for the last 25 years. She has also attended church at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids with him during that time.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Terrence of Sioux Falls; her two daughters, Karen (Steve) Heinemann of Dell Rapids, and Colleen (Ronald) Feistner of Brandon; her five grandchildren, Krista, Derek, Kari, Melissa, and Paul; her four great-grandchildren, Aiden, Keaton, Keira, and Graham; her sister, Marlys Burns of Duluth, MN; and her special friend, Don Knutson of Dell Rapids.

Anna Horst

Anna Horst, Sioux Falls, SD, died April 7, 2016, at Sanford USD Medical Center. She was 70. Funeral Services will be held 11:00am Monday April 11, 2016, at Peace Lutheran Church. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. On-line condolences may be left at Miller Funeral Home.

Anna Marie Horst was born at home in Corsica, SD on March 11th, 1946 to Samuel and Ellen (Beck) Schryvers. Anna graduated from Corsica High School in 1964.

On April 27th, 1968 Anna married the love of her life, Steven Leroy Horst. The couple began their married life with service to our country. Steve began his US Navy career and Anna began her Navy wife career. In 1985 they retired from the Navy and began the 2nd chapter in life. For many years Anna taught at the Corsica and Dell Rapids public school systems as a Special Education Teachers’ Assistant.

After their 2nd retirement, Steve and Anna enjoyed traveling to warm places with friends, bowling, golfing and their trips to casinos or “The Office” as the family liked to say. But above all, Anna loved spending time with her grandchildren. Whether it was saying the humorous “get up you got a job” or telling them “get your homework done” the love and joy she shared with them will forever remain in their hearts. Anna passed April 7th, 2016 after a long and valiant struggle with cancer. She was determined to stay around as long as she could for her grandchildren and they benefited from that determination.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Steve; sons, Jeff Horst (Stacie), Jason Horst (Dawn); daughter, Jennifer Bartelt (Chris); 7 grandchildren, Cassity, Trever, Sydnie, Josie, Zachery, Tanner, Dawson; and 9 brothers and sisters. Anna was preceded in death by her parents.
