Joan (Schwebach) Brown

joan-brownJoan C. Brown, 83, of Summersville, WV passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2016 in the Summersville Regional Medical Center. Born July 8, 1933 in Dell Rapids, SD; she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Kottman Schwebach. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ronald J. Brown in 2006; two brothers, Joseph Schwebach and Urban Schwebach; two sisters, Isabelle Schmidt and Cordula Williamson.

Joan attended all twelve years of schooling and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Dell Rapids. She went on to Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD, to earn her teaching certificate. She also attended Dakota State teacher’s college. She was the first lay teacher at St. Mary’s Elementary Catholic School in Dell Rapids, SD. She also taught in Parker and Rapid City, SD, and a private school in Manhattan, NYC.

She married Ronald J. Brown on December 26, 1959. They had four children, Ann Christiansen (Tim) of Austin, TX, Paul Brown (Mary), Patrick Brown, and Alice Hamilton (CJ), all of Summersville; grandchildren, Melissa (David) Augustine, Kelly (Matt Schmidt), Andrew, Nichole, Christy, Anna and Jacob Hamilton, Rachel, John Paul, Luke and Mary Angela Brown and six great grandchildren; Matthew Christiansen, Brianna, Samantha, Catherine and Nicholas Augustine and Adeline Schmidt; two great-great grandchildren, Zayden and Aleah Augustine; three sisters, Mary Ann (Alfred) Loiseau of Egan, SD, Helen (Mike) Hattervig of Dell Rapids, SD and Clare (Conrad) Hubert of Babylon, NY.

Joan’s life was her family. Whatever her children were involved in she was there. She was a Girl and Boy Scout leader as well as fundraising chairman, a room mother for many years, active PTA member, as well as being a CCD and RCIA Teacher for her church. She loved her Catholic faith and participated in every aspect that she could by volunteering as a member of altar society or ladies group as well as a religious education teacher.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at the St. John’s Catholic Church at Summersville with interment in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery at Summersville. Mina Beck

mina-beckMina J. Beck, 66, of Brookings passed away Monday, September 5, 2016. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM Friday, September 9, 2016 at Minnehaha Funeral Home Chapel in Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.  Interment will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Dell Rapids. Mina was born May 7, 1950 to parents Sam and Dorothy (Blom) Berghorst of Edgerton, MN. She was the second child of five siblings. Mina attended Edgerton School System and later graduated from Southwest Minnesota State University in 1977 with a degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management. She managed Gannon Bar and Restaurant and the Calumet Inn in Pipestone. Mina decided to further her education at South Dakota State University and received her four year degree in Nursing. She was employed at Sanford Hospital and at Good Samaritan Facility in Pipestone. Mina’s last employment, which was her calling, was with Intercorp Rehab Specialist which she enjoyed greatly. Unfortunately she needed to retire in 1992 because of health reasons.

Mina entered long term care facilities April 7, 2011. She was at Golden Living in Sioux Falls for a short time before moving to Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids. Mina was at Brookview Manor in Brookings were she passed away Monday, September 5, 2016 after a very long, lingering illness of Lupus.

Mina is lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Michelle (Todd) Canfield and Melissa (Chris) Hansen; very special friend of 38 years, Ray Fuder; four siblings, John Berghorst, Sam (Barbara) Berghorst, Jr, Diana (David) Linnemeyer and Pat (Merle) Behrens. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Kylie Baumberger, Kenzie Baumberger, Jacob Hansen, Alec Hansen, Noel Hansen, Tate Hansen and Briar Hansen; and dear little great-granddaughter, Ella.

Loved ones that are celebrating and welcoming her to her heavenly home are her parents, Sam and Dorothy; nieces, Cindy, Erin, and Jessica and nephew, Baby Boy Linnemeyer.

Larry Forbes

Larry ForbesLarry Dean Forbes, 69, De Smet, and a lifelong resident of Spirit Lake Township, passed away August 26, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family after a short, but courageous battle with leukemia. A funeral service was held on August 30, 2016, at Presbyterian Reformed Church, Willow Lake, SD, with a burial at a later date. On-line condolences may be left at the Osthus Funeral Home.

Larry was born on March 17, 1947, in Willow Lake, South Dakota and was the oldest child of Virgil and Mabel (Tschetter) Forbes. He attended country school at Shady Lawn #8 through the eighth grade. He then attended and graduated from Willow Lake High School, where according to him, he spent too much time in the Ag Shop.

He married “the good lookin’ girl from Bancroft”, Cindy Jencks, on December 30, 1967 in Bancroft, SD.

Larry started farming and raising cattle after high school. He took great pride in his cow herd and enjoyed checking the cows with his dogs.   During his younger years, Larry did custom hay hauling and also owned one of the first big round balers in the area. Larry was very mechanical and was an excellent welder. His dad, brother, and kids depended on him to keep things around the farm running. Larry was known for his love of candy and was affectionately known as “the Candy Man” to many of his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed attending his grandkids’ events, watching NASCAR, talking politics, watching Westerns, reading, and had developed an eye for photography.

He served on the Willow Lake School Board for 8 years. Larry was also a proud member of the Kingsbury Cattlemen’s Association and served on the Grace Lutheran Church Council in Willow Lake.

Larry is survived by his two dogs, Pete and Poco; his four children, Troy (Pam) Forbes, De Smet; Stephanie Forbes (Paul Panning), Hamburg, MN; Jill (Jason) Sommer, Parkston, SD; Jeremy (Jamie) Forbes, De Smet; grandchildren Wyatt, Cody, Jaycie, Abby, Carter, Claire, Cooper, and Tabor; his mother, Mabel Forbes, De Smet; brother, Lyle (Cheryl) Forbes, Bancroft; sister, Linda (Darrel) Mandernach, De Smet; brothers-in-law, Terry Jencks, Shakopee, MN; and Randy (Karen) Jencks, Arlington, SD; Tim Reuter, Dell Rapids, SD; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Cindy Forbes, on May 8, 1991; his father, Virgil Forbes; sisters, Sharri Zell and Darlene Reuter; and his father and mother-in-law, Hollis and Corlyss Jencks.

Loren Vrooman

Loren VroomanLoren Scott Vrooman of Dell Rapids, SD, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at his home. He was 58. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at Faith Temple Church, 2121 W 33rd St., Sioux Falls, SD 57105. Visitation will begin at noon, with the family present from 5:00-7:00 pm Friday, September 2, 2016, at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave., Sioux Falls, SD 57104. Loren was born to Danny and Hazel Vrooman on February 25, 1958 in Pierre, SD. During grade school, Loren moved with his family to Sioux Falls, SD and attended Franklin Elementary. He also attended Edison Middle School before graduating from Lincoln High School in 1976.

After graduation, Loren began work with his father, Danny, as a mechanic at The Gas Stop for a few years in Sioux Falls. Thereafter, he moved to Nebraska where he managed a truck stop until 1979. Loren then enrolled in truck driving at Midwest Coast School. He drove for several companies until 2000. Loren then began his career in prosthetics and worked as a technician for Orthotic & Prosthetic Specialty in Sioux Falls.

Loren married the love of his life, Deborah Jean Schieber, on September 20, 2015 in Sioux Falls after sharing 18 years together. They made their home in Colman, and later moved to Dell Rapids. Their first trip together was to Key West, FL. It was such a beautiful area that they both had trouble wanting to drive back home. They also made a couple trips to Sturgis, SD for the bike rally where they enjoyed the motorcycles.

Loren enjoyed cooking for family gatherings and particularly liked to grill. His specialty was pork loin. He spent his summers gardening and canning. Loren loved to hunt with his family. He also enjoyed golfing, watching NASCAR races, and riding his Harley motorcycle. Last year, Loren and Deb had the opportunity to purchase Loren’s newest Harley – the one that Loren was meant to have. They made a special trip to Pennsylvania to bring it home. Loren especially loved and cherished his grandchildren, and would do anything for them. A loving and protective husband, father, and grandfather, Loren would go out of his way to help those in need.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Deb, Dell Rapids, SD; sons, Michael Bowen (Sarah), Colman, SD, Paul Bowen (Megan), Pierre, SD, Dan Bowen (Nicole), Colman, SD, Wesley Hoeke, Sturgis, SD; daughters, Kristy Hawkins (Bill), Colman, SD, Jamie Bowen, Canton, SD, Chelsey Attebery (Jake), Corvallis, OR; thirteen grandchildren; parents, Dan and Hazel Vrooman, Sioux Falls, SD; and two brothers, Bruce Vrooman (Sue), Superior, WI, Chad Vrooman, Sioux Falls, and his nephew, Justin Vrooman, of Ohio. He was preceded in death by a nephew, Jeremy Vrooman.

Margaret (Geraets) Mairose

Margaret Mary Geraets was born on April 20, 1919 to Henry and Mary (Rickerl) Geraets in Dell Rapids, SD, where she grew up and attended public school. Margaret moved to Sioux Falls in 1943. She was a supervisor and instructor with Northwestern Bell Company before marriage.

Margaret was united in marriage with Jerome Mairose on September 2, 1947 in Dell Rapids, SD. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls, where they raised their 5 children. Once her husband retired Jerry and Margaret traveled extensively in the US and overseas.

Margaret was a member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the American Legion, VFW, DAV Auxiliary, Moose Lodge and the Catholic Daughters. One of Margaret’s favorite things to do each morning was to complete a crossword puzzle.   She enjoyed theaters, musicals and social events with friends and especially cheering on the Minnesota Twins. Margaret loved spending time with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Above all she was a loving and caring, mother, grandmother, sister and friend that will be greatly missed.

Margaret is survived by her children, Gordon (Mary) Mairose, Robert (Vickie) Mairose, Mary (T. Al) Washburn, Jane Mairose all of Sioux Falls, SD, and son John (Julie) Mairose, Rapid City, SD; 3 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; sister, Dolores Salviola, Dell Rapids, SD, and many more family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and 13 brothers and sisters.

Gladys Heinricy

Gladys HeinricyGladys M. Heinricy, 97, of Colman, SD, passed away Friday, August 26, 2016 at the Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls, SD. Gladys was born June 14, 1919 at Colman, SD to Fred and Anna (Kroger) Thiele. She graduated from Colman High School in 1938. Gladys married Leo Heinricy on October 26, 1940 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Colman. They lived on a farm northwest of Colman until 1977 when they retired and moved to Colman. Gladys worked at the Colman Area Rec for several years. Her husband preceded her in death on May 19, 1990. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Colman Senior Citizens and enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, cooking and especially baking pies.

Gladys is survived by her son Dick (Darlene), Colman, SD; daughter Kathy (Chuck) Relf-Schmidt, Avondale, AZ; daughter-in-law Shirleen Heinricy, Sioux Falls; 10 grandchildren, Todd, Danny, Paula, Aaron, Shane, Laurie, Noel, Heather, Jim, Brad; 17 great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Kaitlin, Tyler, Josh, Brooke, Myha, Jordan, Whitney, Elly, Wesley, Aiden, Quincey, Keeley, Lance, Mitchell, Connor, Macy; 5 great-great-grandchildren, Karsen, Kenden, Braelynn, Trent, Rogan; 2 sisters, Laura Croon, Dell Rapids, SD; Wilma Beck, Madison, SD and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Todd Fisher

Todd FisherTodd Dean Fisher, 55, of Pipestone, MN and longtime resident of Trent, SD, passed away on August 22, 2016. A celebration of Todd’s life will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Kahler Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, September 9, 2016. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Inurnment will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Egan, SD. Todd was born on June 1, 1961 at Worthington, MN, the son of Gerald Dean Fisher and Lillian Mae Fisher (Olson-Troff). He attended Flandreau High School and a technical vocational school as well. Todd worked for Wyland Construction, Co. for several seasons as a truck driver and laborer and Bayliner Boat Company in MN. Todd met Lisa Erickson (Peacock) of Pipestone, MN and married in 1988 (-1990) in Lake Tahoe, NV and resided in CA. Todd worked for the city of Fairfield, CA and ran his own slurry seal business. Todd returned to SD in the late 1990’s where he worked in the neon sign business, drove farm trucks for several local farmers and subsequently started his own neon lighting business. Todd was a skilled mechanic, carpenter, and construction engineer.

Todd was known for his athleticism. He was a talented basketball, baseball and softball player. His passion was fishing. He spent many hours along the banks of the Big Sioux River and several local lakes. When in CA he loved crabbing at Bodega Bay and panning for gold. He was a gardener and antique picker. He was compassionate for the young children, the elderly and animals.

Todd has three daughters, Kasey Fisher, Shelby Sumers and Rachel Bedell. He was so proud of his beautiful daughters. He was able to spend more time with them in the last year of his life. He taught Kasey to trout fish and get through the “gargoyle grass.” Todd’s friends remember him as “one of the funniest guys they ever knew.” He could make the old and the young laugh out loud.

Todd is preceded in death by his mother, Lillian (Olson) Fisher Troff, his step father, Robert Troff and Evelyn Bedell.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Kasey Fisher of OK, Shelby Summers of CA, Rachel Bedell of OR; his sister, Robin (Fisher) (Jon) Rowe of Kalamazoo, MI; his brother, Rodney Troff of Flandreau; his three nieces, Chelsea Cullen of AZ, Caitlin Cullen of AZ and Natalie Rowe of MI; his cousins, Terry, Mark and Paul Wheeler, Julie Mathias and Eric Erickson, Lisa Fisher and Sonia Lyn Sumers.

Milton Munk

Munk, 91, of Dell Rapids died Sunday, August 21, 2016 at the Dells Nursing & Rehab Center.  Memorial services will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday September 10, 2016 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM at the church. Burial of the ashes of Milton and Audrey Munk will follow the funeral service at the Dell Rapids Cemetery.  On-line condolences may be left at the Minnehaha Funeral Home website. 

Milton James Munk, son of Edna (Artz) and Jesse Munk, was born August 10, 1925 at Dell Rapids. He grew up in the Dell Rapids area and attended country school at the Nelson School. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1944. Milton entered the United States Army in 1945 and was stationed in Germany, being discharged in 1947.

Milton married Audrey Van Briesen on November 17, 1945 at Camp Robinson, Little Rock, Arkansas. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids until 1948 when they moved to a farm northeast of Dell Rapids. In 1969 they moved to Dell Rapids when he went into the livestock and grain trucking and order buying business. He was the recipient of many Livestock Safety Hauling awards. He was on the Board of Directors for the South Dakota Livestock Trucker Association. He retired (the first time) in 1989. He helped his brother, Harold on the farm for a year and later drove truck for Buskerud Construction, Dells Materials, and later for Dells Coop Grain Company. He also helped Bill Klein’s sons with harvest. Since then he retired at least six times.

Over the years Milton was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids, the Dell Rapids American Legion and the South Dakota Livestock and Truckers Association.

Milton was an avid sports fan, especially football and the Green Bay Packers, baseball and NASCAR. Milton and Audrey enjoyed some winters in San Benito, Texas. When he wasn’t driving truck, he enjoyed coffee and fellowship with good friends at T & C.

Milton was preceded in death by his loving wife, Audrey who died October 18, 2012, their son, Rick; his brother, Eldon and his wife, Vera and his brother, Harold.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Randy (Karen) Munk, Bobby Munk, Candy Munk, Sherry Munk and Peggy Munk; grandchildren, Nathan, Audrey Anna, Andrew, April, Gabriella, Abdul, Wade, Darin, Jennifer, Erin and Holly; nineteen great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law, Gail Bares.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Dell Rapids American Legion or Compassionate Care Hospice.

Aloha King

Aloha Kruger was born on August 24, 1925 to Martin and Ethal (Stevens) Kruger in Twin Brooks, SD. She attended school in Kilborn, SD. She lived in South St. Paul, MN, before moving to Sioux Falls, in 1979.

Aloha was a member at St. John’s Lutheran Church as well as Active Generations and the Moose Lodge. She had a love for dancing and belong to the Golden Age Dance Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Yttreness, Dell Rapids, SD; son-in-laws, Gary Yttreness, Sioux Falls, SD, Gordan Beck, Madison, SD; grandchildren, Todd (Lois) Yttreness, Kansas City, MO, Laura Baker, Brandon, SD, Jay Yttreness, Brandon, SD, Alicia Burkhard, Harrisburg, SD, Marty (Billie) Lusk, Sioux Falls, SD; great grandchildren, DJ (Christyn) Yttreness, Jason (Kris) Yttreness, Josh Yttreness, Nathan Saygili, Melissa (Colin) Pearson, Lindsey (Greg) VanZee, Cory Burkhard, Ellie Lusk, Rylie Lusk and 10 great great grandchildren.

Jean (Briley) Weelborg

Jean WeelborgJean Weelborg, 95, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at the Dells Area Health Center. In honor of Jean’s wishes, there will be a private family service held. Jean Jane Briley was born on August 15, 1920 at Dell Rapids, SD, the daughter of Frank Allen Briley and Flossie (McCafferty) Briley. She grew up and attended school in Dell Rapids, graduating from Dell Rapids High School. After high school she married Ralph Weelborg on March 28, 1940 at Emmetsburg, IA. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids. Jean worked at the Briley grocery store until helping her husband run the Weelborg Brothers Construction Company. The couple ran the business until their retirement in 1983. In retirement the couple loved to visit the Black Hills at the Rushmore Campground in Palmer Gulch on lot 265 and winter in their retirement home in Arizona. Ralph passed away on March 31, 2008. Jean remained in her home until the time of her death.

Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dell Rapids, a past Girl Scout leader, a past 4H leader, an observer for the U.S. Air Force during WWII, DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), and the Rebekah Lodge.

She enjoyed the fire truck which was in many local parades filled with her children and grandchildren, golfing, bowling, knitting and crocheting. She made afghans for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Cathryn Brown and Margaret Peterson, an infant grandson, Colby Luttmann and great-granddaughter, Alexis Luttmann.

She is survived by her daughters, Roberta (Gary) Luttmann of Flandreau, Dolly (Mark) Feehan of Dell Rapids, Joy (Fred) Zwart of New London, MN and Peggy (Keith) Hannemann of Yankton; her grandchildren, Levi (Katie) Luttmann, Malia (Jason) Holbeck, Marcus (Katie) Feehan, Amber (Jesse) Steiner, Cory Parks, Lucas Feehan, Tom Hannemann, Noah Luttmann, Abby (Kirk) LeBrun and Dan (Tiffany) Parks and her seven great-grandchildren, Ella and Parker Luttmann, Daisy, Torin and Haydin Holbeck, Reese Feehan, and Max Steiner and her many nieces and nephews.
