Bill Luke

William “Bill” A. Luke, age 69, of Clark, SD, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2017, at his residence. A Funeral Mass was held on August 8, 2017. Burial was held at St Boniface Cemetery at Clark. On-line condolences may be left at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel of Watertown.

Bill was born on September 24, 1947, to August and Mary (Nies) Luke, in Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up in Marion, SD, and was a 1965 graduate of Marion High School. Following graduation he worked for Miller Harvesting. Bill was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966, where he served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in October of 1972. He married Bonnie Hanisch on February 15, 1969. To this union seven children were born. The couple later divorced. He managed several grain elevators in South Dakota and worked as a farm hand for Indian Springs and later Nordhus Farms. For the last 27 years, he drove truck for Clark-Doland Concrete and owned and operated Luke’s Towing Service. On February 10, 1998, Bill married Sandra Aalbers in Las Vegas, NV.

He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Sharpshooter Badge. Bill was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the VFW and American Legion Post #209, Raymond, serving as commander. He enjoyed woodworking, playing Bingo, and watching Nascar races. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bill is survived by his wife, Sandra, of Clark; his children: David (Brian) Luke of Sioux Falls, SD, Shawn (Ryan) Hansen and Sheryl Zeck both of Watertown, Sheila (Tony) Fisher of Harrisburg, SD, Shannon (Lawrence) Moser and Danelle (Heath) Hale both of Highmore, SD, and Dustin (Kendra) Luke of Harrold, SD; 20 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one step-son, Tim Aalbers, of Sioux Falls; six brothers: John Luke of Marion, SD, Jerome Luke of Mott, ND, Joe (Karen) Luke of Dell Rapids, SD, Ray (Connie) Luke of Sioux Falls, SD, Mike (Joyce) Luke of Hartford, SD, and Paul (Marge) Luke of Marion, SD; four sisters: Donna Miller of Mott, ND, Bernice Kreis of Ashland, NE, Christine Sarnowski of Blair, NE, and Veronica (Frank) Nasavage of Moscow, PA; and one half-sister, Mary Kelch, of Clarion, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Don; and two sisters, Marlene Weber and Maggie Schrader.

Arlene Emly

Arlene (Beckwith) Emly, 96, died peacefully in Tacoma, Washington on August 5, 2017 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her son Wayne Dean Emly (1953). On-line condolences may be left at the Tuell-McKee Funeral Home website.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Oscar, of 71 years; six children, Kenneth (Valerie) Emly, Kathryn (James) Roskens, Mark (Maxine) Emly, Carole (Curt) Buchholz, Audrey (Robert) Welch, and Virginia Emly, 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers Dean Beckwith, Duane Beckwith, sisters Phyllis Finster, Ellen White.

Arlene and Oscar resided in Dell Rapids, SD, for 60 years before spending the next decade at Maple Grove, MN, finally moving to an assisted living home in Tacoma, WA.

Arlene met Oscar in Aberdeen, SD, during his training to become a radio operator with the Army Air Corps. She received a Bachelor’s Degree from Northern State College and taught physics and chemistry in Webster, SD while waiting for Oscar to return from the Pacific theatre during World War II.

Arlene was co-owner with Oscar of the Dells Bakery and served as the bookkeeper/accountant until it was sold and they retired in 1985. She and Oscar participated as small business owners in the community and helped with church and school fund-raising projects throughout busy years of raising their children. Arlene enjoyed studying and teaching Bible classes, photography, crocheting, reading, playing Bridge, and visiting family. She and Oscar spent their retirement years traveling throughout the country and relocated in 1996 to MN where she became an avid Minneapolis Twins fan. She is also fondly remembered by many around the world for her crocheted hats which are keeping hundreds of heads warm.

Gene Larson

Eugene “Gene” Larson, 80, of Crooks, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2017 at the Dougherty Hospice House. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2017 and a prayer service will begin at 7: 00 p.m. all at Miller Funeral Home West Chapel in Sioux Falls, SD. Eugene “Gene” Larson was born on October 20, 1936 at Sioux Falls, SD the son of George and Nellie (Olson) Larson. He grew up in Sioux Falls spending the summer months in Lake Preston. He attended school in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School in 1955. He managed a grocery store in Sioux Falls until he went to work for John Morrell. He worked for John Morrell for 54 years until retiring at age 77. He married Dorothy Sigfried and to this union, three children were born. He later married Janice Witt on March 21, 1975 at Madison, SD. To this union one son was born. The couple made their home on Lake Brandt and then moved to Baltic. They later bought an acreage near Humboldt before moving into their home in Crooks in 1987. He remained there until the time of his death.

Gene was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed writing songs and playing his guitar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Clifford and his wife, Janice.

He is survived by his sons, Jerry (Donna) of Valley Springs and Chad (Carolyn) of Slayton, MN; his daughters, Kathy (Roy) Keiser of Arlington and Nancy Peterson of Harrisburg; his 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; his sisters, Darlene (Robert) Kennedy of Beresford, Bonnie (Richard) Shogren of Sioux Falls and Delores (Gordon) Hansen of Sioux Falls and his many nieces and nephews.

Bill Boyda

William “Bill” Boyda, 77, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Dell Rapids, passed away on Friday, August 11, 2017 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage. A graveside service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 in St. Williams Cemetery, Ramona, SD. His Memorial Service will begin at 3:00 p.m. following the graveside at Kahler Funeral Home. William “Bill” Earl Boyda was born on April 19, 1940, the son of Nicholas and Rosalyn “Mary” (DeCurtins) Boyda. He grew up in Ramona, SD where he attended country school. He then started working for area farmers and eventually moved to Dell Rapids where he worked for the Dell Rapids Elevator. He married Donna Haugse on June 1, 1963 in the Baltic Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids. Bill started working for the Minnehaha County Highway Department in 1969 and retired in 1999. He and Donna moved to Sioux Falls in 2006.

Bill was a member of Active Generations. He enjoyed model cars and trucks.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his three brothers, John, Jim and Bob and his three sisters, Mary Lois, Martha and Pat.

Bill is survived by his wife, Donna of Sioux Falls; his two sons, Brian (Cindi) Boyda of Breezy Point, MN and their daughter, Betsy and Darrel (Beverly) Boyda of Lonsdale, MN and their children, Collin and Emily; his brothers, Ronald (Diane) Boyda of Tyler, TX and Christopher (Rolien) of Phoenix, AZ and his many nieces and nephews.

Marjorie (Hodgson) Lemme

Marjorie Alene Lemme, age 97, of Sioux Falls, SD died on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at the Alcester Care and Rehab Center in Alcester, SD. On-line condolences may be left at the George Boom Funeral Home website.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM on Monday at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Marjorie Alene was born on December 7. 1919 in Wessington Springs, SD to Robert and Daisy (Gillette) Hodgson. Marjorie was raised and received her education in Wessington Springs graduating from Wessington Springs High School in 1936. Marjorie received her teaching degree at Dakota State and Augustana College.Marjorie moved with her family to Madison SD in 1937. She was united in marriage with Lester LeRoy Lemme on February 4, 1946 at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Marjorie and Lester first lived in Madison where she taught country school until making their home in Sioux Falls, SD in 1960. Following 44 years of teaching Marjorie retired in 1982. Lester passed away on December 9, 2007.

Marjorie was a member of East Side Lutheran Church, Life Member of the South Dakota Teachers Association and the Sioux Falls Retired Teachers Association.

Marjorie enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, baking, gardening, reading and playing the card game UNO. Above all she loved spending time with her family and friends. Marjorie was a loving wife, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend who will be dearly missed.

Grateful for having shared her life are: two nieces, Corinne Severtson of Eden Prairie, MN and Julie Hodgson Hawkinson and her husband, Dan of Brookings, SD; nephew, Jim Hodgson of Dell Rapids, SD; many great nieces & nephews; sister-in-law, Donna Jorgensen of Sioux Falls, SD; many friends; and a host of Lester’s nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews and other relatives.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester; one sister, Hazel Cummings; and a brother, Harry Hodgson.

Yvo Bunkers

Yvo A. Bunkers, 88, of Dell Rapids passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2017 surrounded by his family. His Memorial Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 31, 2017 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Yvo Arthur Bunkers was born on December 11, 1928 at Dell Rapids, SD, the son of Emil and Leona (Full) Bunkers. He grew up on the family farm near Dell Rapids and attended St. Mary School. He graduated from St. Mary High School in 1947. After graduation he worked on the family farm until enlisting in the US Navy in 1951. Yvo married the love of his life, Stella Burkard, on January 14, 1952 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. He received an honorable discharge from the Navy in November of 1954 and returned with Stella to take over the family farm. After five years of farming he worked for Schwebach Plumbing and Heating. In 1965 he went to work for L.G. Everist. He was the superintendent of the Brookings Quarry until his retirement in 1990. In retirement Yvo and Stella enjoyed spending their winters in Texas and their summers in Dell Rapids.

Yvo was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He enjoyed his family, golfing, fishing, hunting, refurbishing furniture and woodworking.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his three brothers, Harold, Melvin (Geneva) and Otto; his sister, Lois (George) Schwebach and his brothers-in-law, Ed (Helen) Burkard and Alfred (Arlene) Burkard.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Stella of Dell Rapids; his sons, Paul (Patty) Bunkers of Houston, TX and their children, Will, Meredith (Phillip) and Mattie; Tom (Vicki) Bunkers of Colton and their children Skye, her children (Cash and Katya) and Elise; Dave (Susi) Bunkers of Billings, MT; Greg (Susan) Bunkers of St. Louis, MO and their children, Johni and Luke; his daughter, Laura (Rick) Anderson of Dell Rapids; his brothers, Vincent (Phyllis) Bunkers of Brookings and Terry (Emily) Bunkers of Buckeye, AZ and his many friends and extended family.

Delores (Schildhauer) Wood

Delores Wood departed from this earth to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, July 21, 2017. Her Memorial Service was held on July 26, 2017. On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Delores Ann Schildhauer was born on March 1, 1955 at Dell Rapids, SD, the third child to Chris and Donna (Martinson) Schildhauer. She grew up and attended school in Dell Rapids graduating from Dell Rapids High School in 1973. She attended Barber School. She married David Wood in 1978 in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple moved to Texas for seventeen years where she worked for Farmers Insurance Group. In 1995 she moved back to South Dakota where she worked for CSD Relay from 1999-2013 and then for HOV until declining health forced her retirement. She was living in Trent at the time of her death.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was active in the Sunday Bible Study. She enjoyed reading, movies and tv series. She loved to work.

Delores is preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her brother, Ron (Linda) Schildhauer of Renner; her sisters, Marie (Gus) Kruger of Dell Rapids, Linda (Mason) Neville of Colton, Marlene “Beck” (John) Hauglid of Colman and JoAnn “Etta” (Mike) Borns of Dell Rapids; her many nieces and nephews; David Wood of Trent and her favorite dog, Ella.

Virgil Fiegen

Mass of Christian Burial for Virgil Fiegen will be held on Friday, July 21, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday in the funeral home chapel. Virgil Cornelius Fiegen was born on December 7, 1934 in Colman, South Dakota, the youngest child of John and Jennie Fiegen. Virgil’s family moved to the Devaney farm in 1936 and later to what is known as the Fiegen farm in 1945. As a teenager he was an active member of 4H/FFA and in March of 1950 won first place in a swine judging contest receiving a trophy and $50. Virgil joined the Army in January, 1954 and served in Korea. A few months later in March of 1954 during his two week leave, he asked Shirley Goodale to marry him. Virgil was discharged from the military in October of 1955. While in the service his citations included: National Defense, Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Virgil returned home to Dell Rapids and on May 1, 1956 he married Shirley Goodale. Virgil and Shirley continued to live and farm in the Dell Rapids area until 1966. During that time they had four children, two boys and two girls. They moved to California in 1966 and they had their 5th child, a son. Virgil worked as an insurance agent for National Life Insurance. In 1986 after 20 years as an insurance agent in Los Angeles County he decided to change careers and went to work for the Los Alamitos School District as a custodian. During his time in California he made frequent trips to South Dakota with his family to visit friends and relatives. He enjoyed his years in California, but always thought of his home as South Dakota. Virgil retired in 1997 and moved back to Dell Rapids. In May of this year he celebrated 61 years of marriage to the love of his live. They were together through thick and thin and never left each other’s sides.

Virgil was an active member of St Dominic Savio Catholic Church in Bellflower, California and St Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. Virgil enjoyed many hobbies. He had a great love of fishing and camping which he shared with his children and grandchildren. He also loved pheasant hunting, playing cards, shuffleboard and visiting friends, but dancing with the love of his life brought joy to his heart. He was a member of the American Legion Post 65 where he served on the firing squad, chaplain and legion commander. Through his whole life the thing that made him most proud was his family. He was a wonderful husband, great father and a caring grandfather. The little ones always brought a smile to his face.

During the last five years Virgil had many health struggles, but never complained. He spent a short time in the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls and Touchmark at All Saints in Sioux Falls. On July 12, 2017 he suffered a severe head trauma. On July 18, 2017 he succumbed to his injuries and passed away. He was surrounded by his loved ones when he passed and was never alone.

Those lucky to have shared his life include his wife, Shirley; three sons, Jeffrey (fiancé Kathy) Dell Rapids, SD; Steven (Stacy) Brandon, SD; Scott (Teri), Sioux Falls, SD; two daughters; Kristi Cabral, Ontario, Ca, Lisa (Jerry) Rush, Dell Rapids, SD; His 12 grandchildren; Brian Compton, Kristin Compton, Jerrice Taplett, Jessalee Fiegen, Jeremiah Fiegen, Patrick Fiegen, Kirra Fiegen, Gerard Rush, Kylie Rush, Julia Rush, Todd Fiegen and Katherine Fiegen; 9 great grandchildren and his sister Dorothy Baumberger. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jennie; brother, Melvin; sisters; Joyce Richter and Helen Liester; brother’s-in –law Terry Baumberger, Earl Richter; and daughter-in-law, Joyce Fiegen.

Larry Holt

Larry G. Holt, 72, of Brandon, formerly of Jasper, MN, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at the Bethany Home in Brandon. His funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2017 in Messiah Lutheran Church, rural Flandreau. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the funeral service. Larry Gene Holt was born on March 18, 1945 at Flandreau, SD, the son of Orvan and Darlene (Nelsen) Holt. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethania Lutheran Church in rural Flandreau. He graduated from Jasper High School in 1965. He served in the Army National Guard from 1965 until 1971. Larry farmed with his father until his father’s death in 1981. Larry then farmed his parent’s farm until 1993 when he decided to quit farming. He decided to change his career and he enrolled at Southeast Tech in Sioux Falls, SD to become a long distance truck driver. He was very proud to say he traveled three million miles through 49 states accident free with a total of 29 years on the road. Larry had a stroke four years ago, and he spent the last years in Bethany Meadows Nursing Home in Brandon, SD. Through all his health issues he was able to share his humor and he enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Roger Holt.

He is survived by his sister, Linda Kay (Ronald Sr.) Brochu of Forest Lake, MN; his brothers, Dennis (Bonnie) Holt of Carson City, NV and Richard (Shari) Holt of Trent, SD; his nieces and nephews, Ron Brochu Jr, Michael Brochu, Sandra Brochu, Sydney Holt, Isaac Holt, Keith Holt, Brian Holt, and his many friends and extended family.

Joyce Wigton

Joyce Carroll Wigton died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at her residence in Marshall. On-line condolences may be left at the Rehkamp Horvath Funeral Home website.

Joyce was born Feb. 20, 1941, in Hope Township, Lincoln County, to Clarence and Mabel (Peterson) Wigton. As a young child, she suffered through Polio. She lived in a variety of communities including Faribault, St. Peter and Willmar before moving to Marshall in 1979. She lived at REM Fairview and worked for Advance Opportunities. Joyce was always smiling. She enjoyed wearing hats and looking good. She also enjoyed playing cards, singing, and going for car rides, especially if they involved going over bumps or enjoying views of water or the railroad.

She is survived by her siblings Clarissa Breyfogle of Garretson, S.D., Jean (and Vernon) Popowski of Staples, Jerry Wigton of Mesa, Ariz., Betty Wigton of Dell Rapids, S.D., Clarence (and Lynn) Wigton of Tracy; nieces, nephews, many friends, housemates at REM and co-workers at Advance Opportunities. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Louis and Lee and brother-in-law James Breyfogle.
