Gerald Goodale

Gerald “Jerry” Goodale died on Thursday, February 20, 2020, at the age of 91 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 AM Monday, February 24, 2020 at Huntimer – St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church, rural Colton, SD. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Dell Rapids.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 PM with a Wake Service at 5:00 PM Sunday, February 23, 2020 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Jerry was born February 8th, 1929 to Frank and Bethel (Morgan) Goodale in rural Baltic, SD where he attended school. Farming was the Goodale’s livelihood. Shortly after graduating from Baltic High School, Jerry, his parents and sister, Shirley moved to their current farm in 1948 near Chester where two of his sons continue his passion of farming.

He met and married the love of his life and dancing partner, Geraldine Wolles and raised eight children on the farm; Terry (Michelle) Goodale, Chester, Marilee (Bob) Casanova, Ramona, Sheila (Steve) Ingram, Ft. Pierre, Cinda (Steve) Pankratz, Sioux Falls, Ken (Kathy) Goodale, Chester, Angie (Mark) Quissell, Sioux Falls, Jan (John) Smallcomb, Sioux Falls, and Doug (Stacey) Goodale, Sioux Falls. 24 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren love Jerry. His sister, Shirley Fiegen, Dell Rapids, also survives him. Jerry and Geraldine were married just short of 60 years.

His truly wonderful story telling abilities and his remarkable dancing skills will be missed.

His wife, Geraldine, their infant son, daughter, Marilee, Jerry’s brother, Francis Goodale and sister, Jean Thompson, precede him in death.

We can all imagine Jerry again finally able to say to Geraldine …”May I have this dance?”

Raymond Crisp

Raymond D. Crisp, 87, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at the Avera Dells Area Hospital. His funeral service was at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2020 in the United Methodist Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation was on Friday, January 31, 2020 at 1:00 p.m at Kahler-Brende Funeral home with the family present from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. www.kahlerfh.com.

Raymond was born in Dell Rapids, SD on February 27, 1932, the son of Maurice and Florence (Hart) Crisp. He grew up on the family farm east of Dell Rapids. He attended grade school in the Hart Country School. He finished his schooling in Dell Rapids. He married Margaret DeJong on November 28, 1953. Soon after their marriage he was drafted into the US Army. After two years he was discharged and continued farming until his retirement. Margaret died on November 28, 2014. After Margaret’s death Raymond moved into Dell Rapids.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dell Rapids, a lifetime member of the Elks Club in Sioux Falls and a board member of the Dell Rapids Cemetery. He enjoyed his season tickets to the Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux Falls Skyforce and Augustana Basketball.

He is survived by his son, Gary (Linda) Crisp of Brandon; his daughters, Nancy (Curt) Andersen of Colton,  and Cindy Crisp (George Breen) of Dell Rapids; two grandchildren, Timothy (Kimberley) Bares of Acton, CA and Jessica (Joshua) Willprecht of Dell Rapids; his four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jenna, Jase Willprecht and Jordyn Bares; his step-grandson, Ben DeSchepper (Mandy) of Sioux Falls and five step-great grandchildren, Trevor, Shelby, Nicholas, Sean and Jacob.

Raymond is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margaret and and his brother, Duane.

Ronald Reiff

Ronald G. Reiff, 78, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2020 at the Avera Dells Area Hospital. His Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 will begin at 4:00 p.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church. The family will be present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with a Christian Wake beginning at 7:00 p.m. A Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary will follow. Ronald George Reiff was born on July, 4, 1941 in Chester, SD and was the first of four sons born to George and Veronica Reiff. Ron graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1959. After high school Ron enlisted in the US Navy and US Army Reserves. Upon returning to Dell Rapids, Ron married his high school sweetheart, Judie on June 24, 1961. Ron and Judie made their home in Dell Rapids, where Ron began his business career working for Bunker’s Oil Co., later purchasing the business from his uncle. Ron was involved with the Dell Rapids community, serving in numerous ways – the volunteer fire department for over 30 years, the Dell Rapids Lumberyard Board, a member of the Jaycees and the Catholic Order of Foresters, and was an active member of St Mary’s Parish. Ron was known for his gift of gab, able to talk to anyone about their family, farm and events happening around the area. His sharp mind and ability to engage with anyone continued throughout his life. His love for sports was evident when he shared the fond memory of his high school basketball team winning the Little Four Tournament, his love of watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events, and his enthusiasm for the Minnesota Vikings. Ron spent his leisure time golfing, pheasant hunting and fishing.

Ron was very much a family man, purchasing The Huddle in 1976 and involving the entire family in the restaurant operations. Annual family trips to the chain of lakes near Alexandria, MN was the site for fishing, water skiing and campfire stories. Judie passed away on September 29, 1998. Ron left a legacy of family, including four children, 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren with a 15th expected very soon. Ron is survived by Greg (Lorna) of Dell Rapids, Brian (Teri) of Des Moines, IA, Jeannine Park (Mike) of Dell Rapids, and Ronda Golden (Joe Jr.) of Dell Rapids; his three brothers, Tom (Jeanne) Reiff, Bob (Diane) Reiff and Jim (Karen) Reiff all of Brant Lake City, SD and his many friends and extended family.

Ronald Wolf

Ronald J. Wolf, 91, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Friday, January 17, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. His Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids.  Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, January 21, 2020. Ronald Wolf, son of Martin and Lillian Wolf was born June 19, 1928 in Ramona, SD. He attended grade school in Nunda, SD and attended High School in Winfred. After his schooling, Ron enlisted in the Howard National Guard and served in Alaska, during the Korean War with the 147th Field Artillery Service Battery. After he was honorably discharged, he made his home in Winfred, SD working on the family farm and working construction.

He was united in marriage with Donna Ptak on July 11, 1964 at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Tyndall, SD. They originally made their home in Flandreau, SD, and moved to Dell Rapids, SD in 1974. Ronald was employed with East River Electric and then Wyland Construction until 2003 when he retired.

Faith and family were very important to Ron. He also enjoyed hunting, gardening, and playing pool with friends.

He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the American Legion in Dell Rapids, SD.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 55 years, Donna (Ptak) Wolf. His children: Jeanne (Bill) Schneider, Rapid City, SD, Kevin (Sari) Wolf, Gillette, WY, Sister Maria Clemens Wolf, O.P., Nashville, TN, Allen (Dawn) Wolf, Worthing, SD, and Mick Wolf, of Gillette, WY. Ten grandchildren, Angie (Quinn Doheny), Zach, Natasha (Ashton Showalter), Deva Hunter, Trinity, Katy, Benjamin, Matthew, Garrett, and Halle Sue (Aaron Meek), and two great grandchildren, Theo and Arlo. Brothers: Martin (Lefty) Darlene, Leo (Delda), Gary (Bonnie), sisters, Mary Poncelet, Shirleen Berkelo, and Grace (Tom)Wolf and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ambrose, Bill, and Tom; Sisters Betty Prill, Barb Goodspeed, Maureen Williams; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Wolf, and Becky Wolf; brothers-in-law, Maurice Williams, Ralph Poncelet and Bill Goodspeed.

Charlotte Hinricher

Charlotte M. Hinricher, 92, of Dell Rapids, died of natural causes on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at the United Living Community in Brookings. Her Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2020 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids with Fr. John Lantsberger as the celebrant. Casketbearers are Elliot Hinricher, Court Hinricher, Sam Hinricher, Ben Hinricher, Michael Hinricher, Jr., Zachery Hinricher, Joseph Tonneson  and Mathew Hinricher. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery. Charlotte was born to Joseph Nicolaus Nemmers and Magdalen (nee) Roeder in Dell Rapids on July 14, 1927. She was the 12th of 13 farm children. She became motherless at age 11 when Magdalen died from tuberculosis. Her maternal aunt, Mary, helped raise and mentor her. She attended St. Mary Catholic Parish schools and graduated in 1945. Soon after, her oldest brother, Roman, paid for train fare to New York City (her first such trip abroad) so that she could stay with his family for an extended stay.

Charlotte met Robert Hinricher at a wedding dance. During this time, she tended for her father Joe’s home. Joe insisted that Bob be invited over for Sunday dinners, where they would enjoy one of Charlotte’s fresh-baked pies. They married one year later on September 5, 1949 in Dell Rapids. They honeymooned in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Together, they farmed for 11 years in Moody County before moving to Dell Rapids in 1960.

During this time before our current “farm-to-table” movement, she continued to process chickens, lard, and sweetcorn from relatives for the freezer, and canned applesauce, tomatoes, pickles, and jams.

Charlotte worked at Terrace Manor (now Dells Nursing and Rehab Center) from 1973 to 1997, growing in responsibility from a part-time cook, then head cook, to finally a certified dietician. For a decade of seasons, Bob and her helped run the Tonneson Farm pumpkin patch in Glyndon, MN. She also provided childcare for her grandsons Sam and Ben.

A devoted member of St. Mary Catholic Church her whole life, Charlotte was active in the Saint Theresa’s Altar Society Group and as a lay minister for Holy Communion. Bob and her typically said the rosary together before bedtime.

She was an avid pinochle player, jigsaw puzzle assembler, and reader of books. She was known for her beautiful penmanship, her many colorful flower beds, her large vegetable garden, her homemade sweet pickles, and especially her fruit pies.

Her love, generosity, cooking skills, and fond memories are survived by her elder brother Quintin Nemmers of Dell Rapids, SD; her daughter Kathy (Lon) Tonneson of Phoenix, AZ; her sons Terry of Newbury Park, CA, Ron of Woonsocket, SD, Earl (Melanie) of Forestburg, SD; Joe (Edie) of Dell Rapids, SD; Mike (Sharon) of Murfreesboro, TN, and Tim (Lisa) of New Prague, MN; her 16 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her brothers Urban, Aloysius, Roman, Fr. Leonard, Fr. Charles, Arnold, and John; her sisters Florence, Mary, Sr. Gertrude, and Sr. Helen; and her husband Robert.

Elizabeth Werner

Elizabeth Holmgren Werner, 91, of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Pipestone, MN and Dell Rapids, SD passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2020 in Mesa, AZ.

She is preceded in death by her two husbands, John “Eddie” Holmgren and Maynard Werner and her son, Steven Holmgren.

She is survived by her children, Marvin (Deborah) Holmgren of Sioux Falls, Joyce (Steve) Kramer of Mesa, AZ and Virginia Benton of Pipestone, MN.

A graveside service will be held at a later this spring at the Dell Rapids Cemetery.

Donald Brende

Donald “Donnie” J. Brende, 72, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday,  December 27, 2019 in the Baltic Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the East Nidaros Cemetery. Donald “Donnie” Jerome Brende was born on November 18, 1947 at Sioux Falls, SD, the son of Clifford and Leona (Nelson) Brende. He lived at Colton, SD until age four when he moved with his family to a farm two and a half miles straight west of Baltic, then to a farm southeast of Baltic before moving into Baltic. He attended Baltic school and graduated from Baltic High School May of 1966. After high school he attended General Beadle College (Dakota State) in Madison majoring in Industrial Arts. He joined the Army reserve in 1970 and was honorably discharged in 1976. He married Patricia Gill on May 31, 1975 at Baltic Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Baltic until moving to Dell Rapids in 2001.

Donnie worked most of his life in the construction industry. He worked at Buskerud Construction, Wade Construction, the Colman Lumber Yard and Sunderman Manufacturing. He continued to work part-time for Sunderman until he fully retired at the age of 70.

At a young age he began hunting. He was an avid hunter of deer, pheasants and neighborhood rodents until health issues forced him to quit. He still enjoyed visiting with his friends about their hunting adventures.

He loved watching his children playing in their sports and rarely missed a game. He was looking forward to following his grandchildren through their grade and high school sports.

He loved going to flea markets and gun shows, and collecting guns and anything else he could sneak into the house. Donnie enjoyed wood working and making keepsakes for his extended family and grandchildren.  He was a member of Baltic Lutheran Church

Donnie is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Duane “Duke” and brother-in-law, Virgil.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Pat of Dell Rapids; his children, Scot (Michelle Wyffels) of Portland, OR, Sherri Brende of Iowa City, IA and Steve Brende of Clear Lake; his four grandchildren, Quinn, Paul, James and Nash; his in-laws, Jack Gill of Sioux Falls, Rosemary Gill of Mesa, AZ, Theresa Van Holland of Dell Rapids, Janice (Verlyn) Van Holland of Dell Rapids, and Patti Brende of Dell Rapids; his Godchildren, Renae Luitjens and Ross Brende and his extended family and many friends.

Harlan Williams

Harlan Williams, formerly of Webster, SD, crossed the thin veil from this world into waiting arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus, Saturday December 7, 2019, at Ava’s Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD, with his children by his side. Harlan would have celebrated his 87th birthday in January. His celebration of life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at River Community Church, 511 E 7th St, in Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Internment, including a graveside service, will be in the Webster Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2019. The public is welcome to both services.

Harlan was born in Webster, SD on January 15, 1933, the third of eight siblings born to Hilman O. and Evelyn (Jacobson) Williams. He was baptized, confirmed and a life-long member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He attended country school through the 8th grade, ‘walking up hill both ways to attend, with one bike shared by eight.’ He graduated from Webster High School in 1950. He enlisted in the US Army, where he served from 1953 through 1955. He was transferred to the US Army Reserves in order to care for the family farm upon his father’s illness.

Harlan met his life-long partner and love, Maxine Graves, at a dance in Waubay, SD. They married February 8, 1959 in Waubay. They lived on and worked the family farm until 1978. During this time, their four children, Sandy, Chuck, Terri and David were born. The farm became the gathering place for all, including extended family and anyone who needed people to call family. It was here that Harlan taught his nephews and nieces the value of hard work over their summer stays, Maxine welcomed all with open arms and amazing food. Harlan was most at home surrounded by the dust and dirt of the fields and animals, with his family along his side.

Harlan and his family moved into Webster in 1978 to manage the American Legion Club #40, where he had been a long-term member, and served as commander. He and Maxine were partners in this endeavor until 2003, when they retired and moved to Groton, SD to be closer to grandchildren. He returned to his roots of farming through involvement and work on a local family farm for several years, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He continued to live in Groton following Maxine’s death until 2014 when he moved to Dell Rapids, SD to live with his daughter, Sandy and her family, in order to receive dialysis and the care he needed. His Earthly life peacefully came to a close following a brief stay at Ava’s Hospice House.

Harlan was best known for his humor, pranks and teasing, of which anyone who knew him has a story to tell. Children of all ages, along with dogs of all sizes, were immediately drawn to him. Some of this was motivated by his soft heart and laid-back demeanor, along with candy and treats he always had on hand. His dedication to God, his family and country largely defined who he was.

Those keeping Harlan’s memory alive are his children, Sandy (Jack) Koenig, Terri (Joe) Williams Murray, David (Angie) Williams, along with his grandchildren, Nathan and Jay Koenig, Karen Williams, Patrick, Shanon, Mariaha, Caidince, and Mason Murray, Amanda, Benjamin and Jesse Williams. Great grandchildren include Mariah and Katherine Koenig, Kevin Koenig, and Kason Murray, as well as many nieces and nephews. Siblings include Leon Williams and Mary Burke. Preceding him into eternal life are his wife, Maxine, son, Charles (Chuck), grandson, Kevin, parents, Hilman and Evelyn, and siblings Helen, Betty, June, Charles (Chuck), and Roger.

Mike Kriens

Mike Kriens, 90, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls. His Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 in St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Dell Rapids. Mike’s grandchildren will serve as his casketbearers. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 9, 2019 at Kahler Funeral Home. The family will be present at 4:00 p.m. with the Christian Wake Service beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Mike Clarence Kriens was born on August 25, 1929 to Clarence and Elizabeth (Riley) Kriens. He grew up in rural Colton and attended school there. He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in August of 1953. After he returned home he was united in marriage to Kathryn Louise Welbig on November 18, 1953. The couple made their home and farmed northwest of Dell Rapids with their six children for 44 years. They moved into Dell Rapids in 1997. Mike continued to make daily trips to the farm, which was his greatest passion. Louise passed away on March 24, 2016. Mike continued to live in their home in Dell Rapids.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Louise, his parents, his three brothers, Max, Herb and Tim Kriens and his sister, Betty Stangeland.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, David Kriens of Dell Rapids, Sharon (Harold) Nicholas of Harrisburg, NC, Joan (Alan) Amundson of Colton, Jean (Mike) Gilmore of Dell Rapids, Karen (Wayne) Johnson of Sioux Falls and Terry (Barb) Kriens of Dell Rapids; his 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Bud (Colleen) Welbig of Dell Rapids; sister-in-law, Sr. Lynn Marie Welbig of Sioux Falls and many friends and extended family.

Robert Baum, Sr

Robert Baum Sr., 92, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2019 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. His Memorial Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2019 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Robert (Bob) Eugene Baum Sr. was born in New Richmond, WI to Margaret and Herbert Baum on October 5 1927. Robert married Loraine on April 29, 1950 in Chicago.

Bob enlisted in the Navy after high school and earned his electrical engineering degree while in the service. While still in Chicago, Bob joined Sencore  and became a major force in their growth, advancing to Vice President. Sioux Falls was chosen to be the new home for Sencore and Bob moved his family to rural Dell Rapids in 1969. Bob and Loraine were blessed with 62 years of marriage.

Bob was an active member of the community. He was a member of the Lions club, bowled many years on a local bowling league and was a lifetime member of the Dell Rapids golf course. Golf was his passion and he was well known for walking the course even into his eighties.

Bob enjoyed finding solutions for any problem that would arise and he taught his children to always seek the solution rather than focus on the problem. He was self motivated and taught himself to oil paint, he was also gifted in carpentry; upon moving into the family home he proceeded to completely change the floor plan and with the help of his children turned the house into a home.

After retiring from Sencore he became a mainstay for Habitat for Humanity putting in 25 years of volunteering. In 2015 they awarded him a plaque recognizing his loyal service, which he displayed proudly.

Those who will keep his memory alive are his children, son, Robert Jr. and Carol Baum of Dell Rapids, daughter Mari and Paul Ginsbach of Dell Rapids, son, Don and Kim Baum of Dell Rapids, son, Marty and Tracy Baum of Dubois WY, son, Carl and Shelli Baum Kansas City MO, daughter, Anne Douglas and her fiancee Gordon Fossum Jr. of Sioux Falls. His 21 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild on the way. His brother Gary and Paula Baum, brother- in-law Don Strohbeen, brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Mary Lou Derwent.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, his sisters Bettie and Dolores, his loving wife Loraine her parents and sister, his son-in-law Bill and his two grandchildren Jeremy and Megan.
