Dale “Buddy” May

Buddy MayBuddy May, age 64, of Huron, SD, died Thursday, August 7, 2014, at his home. Dale Allen May, son of Dale A. and Lillian (Trotter) May, was born on January 21, 1950, in Huron, South Dakota. He graduated from Huron High School in 1968.

Following an undefeated season in 1967, Buddy became the South Dakota State Wrestling champion in his weight class. He attended Huron College and continued his wrestling career becoming the SDIC champion in 1969. He also qualified for the national wrestling tournament in 1969-1970.

On February 16, 1974, Buddy married Linda Weinzetl in Huron. Buddy worked as a federal meat inspector for USDA in Huron and the upper Midwest area for many years. On March 13, 1987, Buddy married Susan Kline in Huron.

On November 4, 2004, Buddy married Evonne Addison in Brookings. In 2004 Buddy began working for Fair City Foods in Huron as produce manager until ill health forced his retirement in May 2014. Buddy’s family and friends always came first in his life. In addition, his many hobbies and interests included Huron Tigers High School wrestling (beginning in his high school years Buddy attended every South Dakota state wrestling tournament); car races; tinkering in his garage; and “toy rides” with his step-daughter, Erin.

He is survived by his wife, Evonne of Huron; 5 children, Tony (Amy) May of Clarinda, IA, Sarah May of Huron, Melissa (Scott) Cady of Gillette, WY, Nikie (Brent) LaFortune of Dell Rapids, and TJ May of Huron; 4 step-children, Carla Addison of Aberdeen, Tara (Corey) Gaulrapp of Aberdeen, Robert French of Aberdeen, and Erin French of Aberdeen; 17 grandchildren; his father, Dale May of Huron; 3 sisters, Rita Swanson of Winter Park, FL, his twin Gayle (Tom) Langbehn of Durant, IA, and Char (Brad) Olson of Rapid City; many nieces, and nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian in 2001; grandson, Austin Bowman; and half-brother, Lyle Timperley.

Buddy died Thursday morning at his home at the age of 64 years, 6 months, 16 days. His body has been cremated and his memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 11, 2014, at Congregational United Church of Christ. Memorial visitation with family present will be Sunday, August 10, from 7-9 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at www.welterfuneralhome.com
