December 31, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Monnie FokkenMarlayne “Monnie” Fokken, 68, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2015. The family will greet friends from 2:00 pm- 4:00 pm Friday, January 1, 2016 at Miller Funeral Home-Downtown, 507 S. Main Ave. A memorial service will be 11:00 am Saturday, January 2, at First Lutheran Church, 327 S. Dakota Ave. Condolences may be left at Miller Funeral Home.

Marlayne Berniece Lerdal, daughter of Morris and Berniece (Quissell) Lerdal, was born October 9, 1947 in Sioux Falls, SD. She grew up on the family farm northeast of Dell Rapids, SD and she graduated from Dell Rapids High in 1966. Monnie then worked at the National Bank of South Dakota in Sioux Falls.

On April 26, 1969 she was united in marriage to Michael Fokken at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Monnie then focused her life on being a homemaker where the couple was blessed with three children, Tricia, Scott, and Andrea. In 1972 the family moved to Elk Point, SD, where she operated a home daycare while the kids were growing up.

She was her children’s greatest fan for all their activities and their racing. Monnie later worked at the Pioneer Drug in Elk Point and with the Union County Abstract Company.

The family moved to Sioux Falls in 1997 where they started their own business, Impact Enterprises and Impact Auto Works, where Monnie served as office manager. They sold the business in 2009 and she later began working for the Carroll Institute as the initial screener. She retired in 2012 due to ill health with COPD.

Monnie was a huge fan of her family’s sprint car racing career. Scott was the driver, the rest of the family was the pit crew and she was the “Race Family Boss”. She also took great joy in creating a bird sanctuary in the ponderosa pines around their home.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Michael; her children, Tricia Erickson, Beresford, SD, Scott, Sioux Falls, and Andrea (Luke) McCorkindale, Laurel, NE; her grandchildren, Hesston and Macey Erickson, Molly, Mallory and Miranda Fokken, and Berniece, Hattie, and Myrtie McCorkindale. She is also survived by her sister, Illynne Auseth, Sioux Falls; her mother in-law, Patricia Fokken, Sioux Falls; her brothers and sisters in-law, Dennis (MaryBeth) Fokken, Yankton, SD, Mary Griffith, Sioux Falls, Stephen (Rhonda) Fokken, Lexington, NE, Carol (Russell) Beard, Columbus, GA, Patrick (Neili) Fokken, Humboldt, SD; an aunt, Madeline Hatlestad, Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Berniece; and a sister Jolanne Lerdal, and father in-law, Oliver Fokken.
