The Dell Rapids City Council will meet this evening (Monday, July 16th) beginning at 7:30 p.m. The council will set a date for a special meeting enabling them to canvass the votes from Tuesday’s “opt-out election” regarding the library. Voters will go to the polls to decide by simple majority if the city of Dell Rapids will allow for a $60,000 per levy to help fund the renovation of a new library. Other items on the council agenda will include permit requests from the Relay for Life group and for DQ Days (see previous stories under community events). Discussion of another special meeting for July 30th will be discussed allowing for a public meeting with property owners for the 7th St. project.
City Council Meeting Tonight
One of the big discussions at the most recent Dell Rapids City council meetings have been dealing with the possible closures of railroad crossings in town. More discussion and a public hearing is slated on Monday (July 2nd) at the next regular meeting. Also on the agenda, outdoor events permits and authorization of out of state travel for City Administrator Justin Weiland. Several other items appear on the agenda as well including the final update on Quarry Days. The meeting on Monday night begins at 7:30pm at City Hall.
City Council Meeting Monday
The Dell Rapids City Council will meet in regular session Monday, June 18th beginning at 7:30 pm. There will be a public hearing for renewal of malt beverage licenses and South Dakota wine license plus a special events alcohol license request for the Chamber of Commerce. In new business, the Department of Transportation community access grant application for phase-2 for the 15th street project will be discussed plus any other new business on the agenda.
City Council Meeting Minutes
Dell Rapids City Administrator, Justin Weiland, told Big Sioux Media the permit requests that were on Monday night’s agenda were all approved for special events in June. Also, the council discussed and passed a resolution pertaining to opt-out of the property tax to help pay for the addition and renovation of the local library. The following is the resolution posted by the city including an election date in July:

OF $60,000
RESOLUTION FOR OPT OUT
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DELL RAPIDS, SOUTH DAKOTA, do state that the City Council is unable to operate under the tax limitation measure currently in state statute. We therefore OPT OUT of such tax limitation in the amount of $60,000 per year starting with calendar year 2012 taxes payable in the calendar year 2013. This opt out will be for 20 years, which will be through taxes payable in the calendar year 2032. This action has been taken by the City Council and approved by at least a two-thirds vote of the City Council.
As provided in SDCL 10-13-36, the City Council has elected to refer the proposed opt-out to a vote of the people. The referral election will be held on July 17, 2012.
If the opt-out is approved by the voters, the county auditor will be authorized to spread an excess levy to raise tax dollars in the above stated amount.
City Council Meeting
When the Dell Rapids City Commission meets on Monday night several items will appear on the agenda for discussion. At 7:35 pm a public hearing will be held regarding the variance request from Dells Auto Sales, followed by updates for Quarry Days, Crazy Days, the Memorial Day Parade, and Light The Night at Veterans Park. City Council Monday Session
The Dells City Council met in session Monday night with new council members added. Jim Rueckert was added to the council in Ward 2 while Chad Andrews was added in Ward 4. A proposal by L.G.Everist regarding railroad crossing closures was brought forward, but no definitive action was taken. Rueckert was also appointed to the Library Board. At the May 21st meeting, there should be more discussion and a request from the Chamber of Commerce pertaining to Quarry Days events.
Dell Rapids City Council Meeting
The Dell Rapids City Council will hold their regular meeting on Monday night at 7:30 pm at City Hall. Several old and new business items will be discussed including the installation of council members and appointments. A public hearing is also on the agenda for a board of adjustment variance request regarding Dells Auto. Among other topics of discussion include an update on Quarry Days and the Highway 115 DOT construction project.
