Richard “Dick” Schmidt, 67, of Trent, SD, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, March 11, 2013. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at St. Mary Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 with the family present at 6:00 p.m. and the Christian Wake Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home. Richard Lawrence Schmidt was born on March 6, 1946 at Dell Rapids, SD, the son of Lawrence and Irene (Schreier) Schmidt. He grew up on a farm north of Dell Rapids and attended school at St. Mary Schools. He graduated from St. Mary High School in 1964. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1965 and served in Vietnam. He was discharged in 1969. He returned home to Dell Rapids and started working at Kayser Implement and was a dairy farmer. He married Mildred Siemonsma on November 25, 1972 in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple made their home on a farm east of Trent. Richard remained there until the time of his death.
Richard was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Trent American Legion Post. He loved his grandkids, playing cards and going to polka and waltz dances.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Carter Larson, a brother, Henry and two brothers-in-law.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Trent; his children and grandchildren, Katherine (Jason) Jaeger, Megan, Anthony, Jessica, Adam, Julie, Andrew of Bridgewater, Richard (Nicole) Schmidt, Madison, Austin, Cole and Chloe of Egan, Emily (Jim) Muller, Lucas and Sally of Renner, Alan (Susie) Schmidt, Nolan and Blake of Crooks, Brenda (Josh) Berthelsen, Connor and Rebecca, of Parker, Laura (Dan) Larson, Dawson and Dominick of Crooks and Paul (Tanya) Schmidt, Hannah, Riley, Brandon and Micah of Dell Rapids; his brother, Duaine (Gail) Schmidt, his mother-in-law, Emma Siemonsma of Sioux Falls, his sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Miles of Dell Rapids, Joann Siemonsma of Renner and Eva Siemonsma (Kevin Atwater) of Lakewood, CO; his brothers-in-law, Ralph (Debbie) Siemonsma of Spearfish, and Joe (Anne) Ruscher of Sioux Falls and many other relatives and friends.
