Richard C. “Dick” Frederick, age 66, of Mitchell, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2016 at his home after a long battle with cancer. The Funeral Mass for the repose of the soul of Richard Frederick will be prayed at 10:30 AM, Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Watertown, SD with full military honors on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 11:00 AM. For the burial, mourners are asked to meet at Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown at 10:30 AM Saturday, July 9. Visitation will be from 4-7:00 PM Thursday evening at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell with a prayer service and Rosary at 7:00 PM.
Richard “Dick” Frederick and his twin brother, Doug, were born on April 24, 1950 in Watertown, SD to Charles and S. Lorraine (Hess) Frederick. He attended grade school at Immaculate Conception School and graduated from Watertown High School in 1968. Dick married Julie J. Lauseng on June 17, 1972, in Watertown. Dick entered the military in May, 1969 and served in the Vietnam War from March 1970 to April 1971. During his military career, Dick was stationed in Italy, Hawaii, and Georgia, and retired as a Major with the South Dakota Army National Guard after 30 years of service and earning a Bronze Star medal. Dick graduated in April 1979 from the University of South Dakota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and an ROTC commission at which time Dick went back on active duty as an officer until 1983, when he accepted a job with a Defense Contractor as a Computer/Communications Analyst and moved his family to Frankfurt, Germany for two years.
In 1986, Dick started his second career as a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones, serving his clients and friends with financial advice for 30 years. Dick is survived by his wife, Julie of Mitchell, SD; daughters: Shayne Kennedy of Sioux Falls, SD and Kelly Frederick of Mitchell, SD; grandchildren: Emilie (Nathan Byrd), Ashton, Derrek and Kaylyn Kennedy, all of Sioux Falls, SD; and a great granddaughter, Braylie Kennedy-Byrd of Sioux Falls, SD; siblings: Michael (Jill) Frederick of Hartford, SD, Samuel (Aletha) Frederick of Rapid City, SD, Douglas (Deb) Frederick of Sioux Falls, SD, Joseph (Elaine) Frederick of Oaks, ND, Sarah (Ed) Zerfas of Dell Rapids, SD, Helen (Larry) Robel of High Point, NC, Mary (Gary) Reineke of Sioux Falls, SD, Barbara Frederick of Redfield, SD, John (Theresa) Frederick of Sioux Falls, SD and Mark (Christine) Frederick of Rapid City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother in infancy and a sister in infancy.
