Myron A. Joneson, 81, of Dell Rapids passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Quarry Rock Church (the old Acoustic Hall), Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2013. The family will be present at 6:00 p.m. and there will be a time of sharing at 7:00 p.m. in the Kahler Funeral Home Chapel.
Myron A. Joneson was born on August 29, 1931 on a farm near Valley Springs, SD, the son of Gust and Johanna (Nielsen) Joneson. He attended grade school at the district #46 country school and then attended and graduated from Valley Springs High School in 1949. After high school, Myron worked for his brother on the family farm. He married Margaret Olson on January 19, 1951 at the First Baptist Church in Dell Rapids. The couple continued to farm on the family farm in Valley Springs. He was drafted into the U.S. Marines on January 22, 1952. The couple spent 17 months in Hawaii where their oldest son was born. After Myron’s discharge, the family moved to Dell Rapids and started farming northeast of Dell Rapids. They made their home there for 53 years. The couple moved into Dell Rapids in November of 2007.
Myron was a member of the Dell Rapids American Legion where he served as the commander of the firing squad for over 25 years. He served on the township board and many other organizations. He was very active in the draft horse business, attending many sales. He enjoyed pulling his horse drawn sleigh during Christmas for many of the local kids. In the summer he enjoyed giving horse drawn hay rides to the residence of Achieve and the School for the Deaf. He took great pride in having had many young men work for him throughout the years and providing a place for them to stay and have many good meals.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Mike, his brother, Harold, and his four sisters, Helen, Norma,Alice, Jane and Marjorie.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Dell Rapids; his son, Mark (Linda) of Rapid City; his daughter, Mary (Bud Purvis) Joneson of Dell Rapids; his grandchildren, Ali, Michael and Brooks; a special nephew, Ray Riley of Clairmont, FL; his sister, Lois (Ralph) Hansen of Brandon; and his nieces, nephews and many friends.
