Month of July off to Hot Start

June 30, 2012 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The month of July will start very hot this week in the Dell Rapids area.  Temperatures will range in the 90s throughout the first week of July, with heat indexes rising to over 100 degrees.  While enjoying the summer and 4th of July activities this week, be on the lookout for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Signs of heat exhaustion include:

  • confusion
  • dizziness
  • fainting
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • muscle cramps
  • nausea
  • pale skin
  • profuse sweating
  • rapid heartbeat.

Heat stroke, a more serious form of heat illness, can occur quickly in these temperatures.  Heat stroke signs include:

  •  throbbing headache
  • dizziness and light-headedness
  • lack of sweating despite the heat
  •  muscle weakness or cramps
  •  nausea and vomiting
  •  rapid heartbeat which may be strong or weak
  • rapid, shallow breathing
  • behavioral changes
  • seizures
  • unconsciousness
  • red, hot, and dry skin.

The following preventative measures can be taken while outdoors in the heat:

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and a wide-brimmed hat
  • Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more
  • Drink extra fluids
  • Avoid fluids containing caffeine or alcohol.
