Longtime Sioux Falls teacher Joyce Elaine (Satter) Lauer, a member of the Lincoln High School Hall of Fame and daughter of Clarence A. Satter and Cecelia (Moore) Satter of Artesian, S.D., died peacefully Sunday, July 17, after visiting with family and friends. She was 91.
Joyce was born on Sept. 19, 1924, at the Satter family farm home. While attending grade and high school in Artesian, Joyce participated in declamation, especially oratory and poetry competitions, earning top awards in Sanborn County. She was active in music, playing the trombone in the Artesian High School band and singing in the girls’ chorus and mixed chorus. She was the high school reporter for the Artesian Commonwealth.
She taught for more than 50 years in South Dakota schools: Dell Rapids, Hartford, Brandon, Edison Junior High, Washington High and Lincoln High. She also taught summer school for many years as well as English adult education classes. She even taught composition skills to Northwestern Bell Telephone engineers.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the Halladay – Peterson Chapel at Dow Rummel Village with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery. A 12:30 pm Celebration of Life Reception will follow at Minnehaha Country Club. On-line condolences may be left at the Miller Funeral Home website.
