Duane Westergaard

WestergaardDunaeObitDuane Dale Westergaard, 84, of Brandon passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Memorial services were held at 11:00 AM Monday, April 30, 2018 at Faith United Church in Brandon. Burial will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present was from 3:00 to 5:00 PM followed by a prayer service at 5:00 PM Sunday, April 29, 2018 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Duane was born November 9, 1933 to parents Soren and Marthea (Estergaard) Westergaard at Egan, SD. He was raised and received his education in Jasper, MN. He and his family attended Bethania Lutheran Church, rural Trent, SD. Duane attended SDSU, then served in the US Marines from January 12, 1954 to June 18, 1955. After the service, he attended the University of Minnesota studying agriculture and horticulture.

Duane met Shirley Wahlberg at church while they both were attending college in Minneapolis. They were married in 1970 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. The couple resided in Minneapolis, California, Sioux Falls and finally in Brandon.

Duane worked in the agriculture and horticulture industry. He was employed by Champion Products for many years where his superiors said he was an excellent employee with many talents in all facets of his job.

Duane’s children were very much loved by him. He was always active in their lives. Duane was always involved in the church throughout his life. He enjoyed working on cars and equipment as well as watching and attending sporting events. Duane was and is truly loved and will be missed as a husband, father, grandfather and brother in Christ.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Shirley, Brandon; adopted children, Lisa Diaz, Sioux Falls, Chad Westergaard, Brandon, Sara Young, Sioux Falls and Mark Westergaard, Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren; three sisters and a brother.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents.
