Dorothy (Nebben) Plummer

Dorothy PlummerDorothy Elaine Plummer, 84, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Flandreau. Burial is in Union Cemetery in Flandreau. Visitation is from 5 – 8 p.m. Friday at the church.

Dorothy was born to John and Anna (Haugen) Nebben on June 11, 1929, at the Nebben homestead near Colman, the youngest of nine children. Her father died when she was 1 month old.

Dorothy went to Gale Ridge Country School and graduated from Colman High School. She was baptized and confirmed at Hegre Lutheran Church in rural Colman.

She believed in Jesus Christ as her savior. Dorothy worked as a waitress at the Lone Tree Station and Colman Cafe until her marriage to Virtus Plummer on Feb. 13, 1949, at Colman. They farmed for 45 years in Lone Rock Township, Moody County.

She was a member of Lone Rock Lutheran Church for 40 years, where she held various WELCA offices and taught Sunday school for 35 years.

She served on election boards several times and was a teacher’s aide for a short time at Dailey School, worked at Eaton Dakota in Flandreau, and as a biscuit baker at Hardees in Pipestone.

They moved to Flandreau in 1994, where she became a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Her husband died Aug. 6, 1995. Dorothy worked as a receptionist at Social Services and as a porter at Royal River Casino in Flandreau until ill health caused her to retire.

She enjoyed her family most of all and liked music, dancing, cards, quilting, painting, gardening and dogs.

Dorothy is survived by one son, Randy (Rhonda) of Egan; three daughters, Becki (Larry) Landgren of Flandreau, Pam (Craig) Thies of Pipestone, Minn., and Amy (Jason) Ellsworth of Brandon; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five siblings, Swede Nebben of Colman, Art (Dee) Nebben of Dell Rapids, Laura Knutson of Colman, Hilda Johnson of Dell Rapids and Rosie Croon of Colman and a brother-in-law, Don Knutson of Dell Rapids.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Virtus; two sisters, Luella Knutson and Annette Steinborn; brother Olaf Nebben; two nieces Kim Steinborn and Lori McAthie and her uncle Rudolf Haugen who helped raise her.
