De Smet Falls to Castlewood in 2022 Season Opener

The Castlewood Warriors scored two times in the second half and defeated the De Smet Bulldogs 20-14 on Friday, August 19th.

Castlewood took the first lead in the first quarter.  Lane Tvedt threw a swing pass to Quincy Thu, and Thu took it 55 yards to the endzone for a touchdown.  The two-point conversion was good, and the Warriors led 8-0.  The Bulldogs got some momentum in the second quarter.  Noah Harrison provided a spark with an interception of a screen pass and returned it 44 yards to the Castlewood 18-yard line.  Trace Van Regenmorter put the Bulldogs on the board with a five-yard run.  De Smet also converted the two-point conversion to tie the game 8-8.

The Bulldogs then took the lead later in the second quarter.  Kadyn Fast had a 19-yard touchdown run.  The two-point conversion was no good, and De Smet led 14-8.  The defense made a big stand late in the first half.  The Bulldogs stopped a fourth down play deep in their own territory to preserve the 14-8 lead.  De Smet led by that score at halftime.

The Warriors, however, tied the game early in the third quarter.  Tvedt connected with Thu again, this time on a 35-yard pass to tie the game 14-14.  The score remained 14-14 until late in the fourth quarter as the two defenses played tough the entire second half. Castlewood got the game-winning score with 2:28 to play.  Tvedt found a wide-open Booker Schooley from 18-yards away for the touchdown.  De Smet’s final drive of the game ended in a turnover on downs deep in their own end, and the Warriors were able to kneel and run out the clock.

The Bulldogs (0-1) will have their home-opener on Friday, August 26th against Stanley County.
