Cardinal Girls First Half Enough for Win over Cubs

The game came down to the final seconds, but the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals (11-2) earned their 11th win of the season after a 52-48 victory over the Alcester-Hudson Cubs on Friday, January 27th.

St Mary got rolling towards the end of the first quarter.  After an early 8-8 score, the Cardinals finished the first quarter on a 14-4 run for a 22-12 lead at the end of the quarter.  They added to the lead in the second quarter and led 35-24 at halftime.  The Cubs started chipping way at the lead in the third quarter, but still trailed 44-37 going into the final quarter.  Alcester-Hudson cut the deficit to just three points, 51-48, but Ella Griffin made one of two free-throws to make the lead four points and secure the win.

St Mary shot 33% (19-57) from the field overall, 27% (10-37) on three-point shots, and just 4-9 from the free-throw line.  The Cubs were 42% (18-43) overall, 3-6 on three-point shots, and 64% (9-14) from the free-throw line.

Madala Hanson had 24 points, most of those in the first half, five rebounds, four assists, and six steals.  Griffin finished with 10 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and eight steals.  Addison Libis added eight points.  Brianna Griffin had six points in the game.
