The St Mary’s Cardinal girls had their late rally stopped in the opening round of the Region 3B Tournament on Tuesday, February 24th. The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks defeated the Cardinals 48-39.
The Blackhawks grabbed a 13-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. They scored the first two points of the second quarter to lead 15-5. St Mary’s went on an 8-0 run to pull within two points, 15-13, with 5:35 to go in the half. Sanborn Central/Woonsocket ended the half on a 14-2 run for a 29-15 halftime lead.
The run continued into the third quarter for the Blackhawks. They slowly expanded their lead to 39-20 going into the fourth quarter. St Mary’s would then rally in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals went on an 18-5 run to cut the lead to 44-38 with a minute to go in the game. The Blackhawks, though, would stop the rally and hold on for the win.
St Mary’s shot 23% (10-44) from the field overall, 22% (4-18) on three-point attempts, and 68% (15-22) from the free-throw line. Sanborn Central/Woonsocket was 33% (16-49) shooting overall, 35% (6-17) on three-point shots, and 50% (10-20) from the free-throw line.
Maddyn LeBrun finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three steals, and three blocked shots. Stephenie Geraets had seven points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Layla Hanson had six points. Harper Werdel ended with five points and four rebounds. Madelyn Klein had four points and three rebounds.
The Cardinal season come to an end with an overall record of 12-9.
