#6 Centerville Pulls Away for Win over Cardinal Girls in Fourth Quarter

The girls basketball game between the St Mary Cardinals and the #6 ranked Centerville Tornadoes was much closer than the final score would show on Tuesday, February 17th.  The Tornadoes took the win 66-49, but the Cardinals went step-for-step with them for three quarters.

St Mary’s put the pressure on the Tornadoes right away in the opening quarter.  The Cardinals built a 14-10 lead by the quarter break.  Centerville was able to counter in the second quarter and outscored St Mary’s 15-7 for a 25-21 halftime lead.  The Cardinals chipped away and tied the game 32-32 with 3:50 to play in the third quarter.  Centerville ended the quarter on a 13-6 advantage for a 45-38 lead going into the fourth quarter.  That spurt sparked a fourth-quarter rally that saw the Tornadoes outscore the Cardinals 21-11 in the final quarter.

St Mary’s shot 41% (19-46) overall, 24% (4-17) on three-point attempts, and 44% (7-16) from the free-throw line.  Centerville finished the game shooting 43% (23-53) overall, 30% (7-23) on three-point shots, and 72% (13-18) from the free-throw line.
