In a battle against the top two teams in Class B boys basketball, the #1 ranked Castlewood Warriors held off the #2 ranked St Mary Cardinals 63-59 on Tuesday, January 21st.
The Warriors struck first with a 10-3 run to start the game. St Mary answered and pulled within three points, 14-11, by the end of the first quarter. Castlewood would extend their lead to 10 points, 24-14, and then to 29-17 with 3:00 left to play in the second quarter. The Cardinals closed the gap to 29-25 by halftime.
After the Cardinals scored the first two points of the third quarter to make the score 29-27, Castlewood went on a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 36-27. They pushed the lead back to double digits, 40-30, with 2:30 left in the third. Once again St Mary cut into the lead and made the score 43-39 going into the fourth quarter. The Cardinals got back within two points, 45-43, but the Warriors had an answer again. Castelwood went on another 7-0 run for a 52-43 lead. St Mary would get within one possession, 57-54, with 2:15 to play. The Warriors, however, held off the Cardinals again to hold for the win.
Trevon Beckman finished with 27 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Maverick LeBrun had 15 points and eight rebounds. Trimmier Hanson added 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals.
