Cardinal Football Posts Second Straight Shutout

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal football team had their second straight shutout win this season on Friday, August 30th.  The Cardinals defeated the Irene-Wakonda Eagles 52-0 at Augusta University.

Lincoln LeBrun put the Cardinals on the board with a 22-yard touchdown run with 6:27 to go in the first quarter.  Trimmier Hanson connected with L. LeBrun on a 34-yard touchdown pass with 1:21 remaining in the opening quarter to extend the lead.  Hanson scored on a three-yard quarterback keeper from five yards away in the final seconds of the quarter.  St Mary made all three two-point conversions, and the Cardinals led 24-0 after the first quarter.

Jaxon Baumberger got a score on defense after a 53-yard interception return for a touchdown with 10:02 to play in the second quarter.  Thomas LaVoy found the endzone on a 33-yard run with 7:38 left in the first half.  St Mary made one of two two-point conversions in the quarter, and the Cardinals led 38-0 at halftime.

Hanson had his second rushing touchdown on a nine-yard run with 7:23 to play in the third quarter.  A made two-point conversion made the score 46-0.  The game ended with 2:15 to play in the third quarter on the 50-point rule after Baumberger scored on an 11-yard touchdown run.

The Cardinals had 284 yards of offense, 223 rushing yards and 61 passing yards.  Irene-Wakonda had 20 total yards of offense, all on the ground.  LaVoy had five carries for 90 yards and a touchdown.  L. LeBrun had six carries for 55 yard and a touchdown.  Hanson had three carries for 18 yards and two touchdowns.  Hanson was also 2-4 passing for 61 yards and a touchdown.  L. LeBrun had a catch of 34 yards and a touchdown.  Maverick LeBrun ha da catch for 27 yards.

L. LeBrun and M. LeBrun both had 6.5 tackles each.  M. LeBrun also had a half sack.  Keaton Hansen had five tackles, a half sack, and a fumble recovery.  LaVoy had four tackles.  Alex Lindeman finished with 2.5 tackles and a sack.  Baumberger had a fumble recovery and an interception return.

Head coach Ross Flemmer said, “The boys played a great game.  Our offensive line really moved people off the ball, and the defensive line did a great job of getting after the quarterback.  We had a loot of kids really step up and play some good football.  It was a total team effort.”
