St Mary Boys Erase Big First Quarter Deficit for Overtime Win

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team overcame a slow start to get a 55-49 win in overtime in Colman against the Colman-Egan Hawks on Friday, December 15th.

At the same time the Cardinals got off to a slow start, the Hawks were on fire.  Colman-Egan built a 20-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.  The Cardinals got a significant chunk of the points back in the second quarter.  They outscored Colman-Egan 19-6 in the quarter, and the Hawks led 26-21 at halftime.

St Mary kept chipping away at the lead in the third quarter.  They cut three more points off the lead and trailed 33-31 going into the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals got the game tied in the final quarter.  Both teams had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds, but regulation ended with a 42-42 tie score.  The offense of St Mary was able to find enough energy in the four-minute overtime period.  St Mary outscored Colman-Egan 13-7 in overtime for the win.

The Cardinals shot 31% (17-55) overall, 30% (7-23) on three-point attempts, and 70% (14-20) from the free-throw line.  Colman-Egan finished the game shooting 36% (17-47) overall, 30% (6-20) from three-point area, and 69% (9-13) from the free-throw line.

Trevon Beckman had 26 points, five rebounds, five steals, and two assists.  Maverick LeBrun had 14 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.  Nic Gaspar added 11 points and four rebounds.
