Cardinal Girls Win Fourth Straight

The St Mary’s Cardinal girls used a big run in the first quarter and held off an Elkton-Lake Benton rally in the fourth quarter for a 55-48 win at home on Monday, January 12th.  The win was the fourth straight win for the Cardinals.

The two teams were tied 7-7 with 4:30 to play in the opening quarter.  Elkton-Lake Benton took the lead 9-7 thirty seconds later.  St Mary’s would shut the Elks down the rest of the quarter.  The Cardinals ended the quarter on an 11-0 run for an 18-9 lead.  St Mary’s would keep the lead throughout the second quarter and led 29-22 at halftime.

The Cardinals were able to extend their lead in the third quarter.  The lead grew to double digits, 46-33, going into the fourth quarter.  That third quarter run turned out to be big for St Mary’s.  Elkton-Lake Benton rallied in the fourth quarter and outscored the Cardinals 15-9, but they would run out of time.

St Mary’s shot 32% (18-56) from the field overall, just 2-23 on three-point shots, but 68% (17-25) from the free-throw line.  Maddyn LeBrun finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds.  Layla Joe Hanson added 11 points and four steals.  Stephenie Geraets had seven points, three assists, and six steals.  Harper Werdel ended with seven points, five rebounds, and three steals.
