The St Mary’s Cardinal boys overcame a double-digit deficit, but ultimately fell just short in overtime to the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks on Thursday, January 8th. The Redhawks used a 9-0 run in overtime to get a 56-54 win.
Both offenses were slow to get going in the game. The two teams combined for just 15 points in the first quarter. St Mary’s led 8-7 going into the second quarter. The Redhawks were able to put 20 points on the board in the second quarter and built a 27-17 lead going into halftime.
The Estelline/Hendricks lead grew to 13 points, 32-19, with 5:45 to play in the third quarter. The Cardinals were able to cut four points off the lead to make the score 42-33 going into the fourth quarter. The defense for St Mary’s held the Redhawks down in the fourth quarter that allowed the Cardinals to rally. St Mary’s trailed by just one point, 47-46, with :06 to play in the game. Peyton Lamb was fouled putting him on free-throw line. Lamb made one of two shots to tie the game 47-47 and force overtime.
The Cardinals scored the first three points of overtime to take their first lead since the first quarter, 50-47. Estelline/Hendricks, however, would go on a 9-0 run to go back in front 56-50. The Cardinals got within two points, 56-54, but ran out of time as the Redhawks held for the win.
St Mary’s shot 43% (19-44) overall in the game, 41% (9-22) from three-point area, and 58% (7-12) from the free-throw line. Estelline/Hendricks finished the game shooting 40% (20-50) overall, 33% (7-21) on three-point shots, and 47% (9-19) from the free-throw line.
Lamb finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, and three assistss. Joseph Trumbauer added 13 points and four rebounds. Isaac Griffin had nine points and six rebounds. Trimmier Hanson ended with six points, three rebounds, and seven assists.
