Third Quarter Surge Leads to Win for St Mary’s Boys

The St Mary’s Cardinal boys basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit in the first half and defeated the Garretson Blue Dragons 53-47 at home on Tuesday, January 6th.

Garretson took advantage of a slow start by the Cardinals and built a 15-8 lead by the end of the first quarter.  The Blue Dragons went on a 5-0 run in the first :30 of the second quarter to extend their lead to 20-8.  The Cardinals were able to find some offensive rhythm and cut the lead to 27-24 by halftime.

They would continue that momentum into the third quarter.  St Mary’s outscored Garretson 14-5 to go in front 38-32.  The Caridnals would not lose their lead the rest of the game.  Each team would score 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals held for the victory.

St Mary’s shot 48% (21-44) from the field, 31% (5-16) from three-point area, and 60% (6-10) from the free-throw line.  Garretson finished the game shooting 35% (17-48) overall, 29% (6-21) on three-point attempts, and 47% (7-15) from the free-throw line.

Trimmier Hanson had 16 points and two assists.  Peyton Lamb finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.  Joseph Tumbauer added nine points.  Isaac Griffin had eight points.  Logan Bauer finished with six points and five rebounds.  Lincoln LeBrun grabbed eight rebounds in the game.
