The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls traveled to Colman to play the Colman-Egan Hawks in a battle of top 10 teams on Thursday, December 18th. The Hawks used a run in the third quarter to help them to a 62-46 win.
The Hawks took an early 5-2 lead in the first minute and a half of the game. The Cardinals responded with a 5-0 run to go in front 7-5 over the next minute. Colman-Egan would go on a 12-3 run to retake the lead 17-10 with 2:00 to go in the quarter. The first quarter ended with Colman-Egan leading 20-13.
Colman-Egan continued to hold a lead, 26-18, with 4:15 to play in the half. St Mary’s rallied to within three points, 28-25, with 1:15 remaining. Colman-Egan would score the final two points of the quarter for a 30-25 halftime lead.
The Cardinals could cut the lead down to just one point, 34-33, with 4:35 to play in the third quarter. That’s when Colman-Egan went on a run. They closed out the third quarter on a 14-1 run to turn a one-point lead into a 14-point lead, 48-34, going into the fourth quarter. St Mary’s was only able to get within 10 points, 54-44, with 4:00 left to go in the game.
St Mary’s shot 30% (15-50) from the field overall, 13% (2-16) on three-point attempts, and 58% (14-24) from the free-throw line. Colman-Egan finished 50% (25-58) overall, 32% (6-19) from three-point area, and 75% (6-8) from the free-throw line.
Maddyn LeBrun had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Stephenie Geraets added 12 points, five rebounds, and four steals. Layla Joe Hanson had nine points and two steals. Madelyn Klein finished with six points and three rebounds.
