The St Mary Cardinal volleyball traveled to Castlewood to face the Warriors on Monday, October 6th. The Warriors took the match in four sets by scores of 25-23, 23-25, 26-24, and 25-22.
Castlewood opened the first set with a 5-0 run. St Mary was able to tie the score 9-9. The Warriors went back in front 13-12, but once again St Mary tied things at 17-17. The Cardinals then went ahead 19-17 and continued to lead 21-19. Castlewood rallied to tie the score 23-23, and then they scored the final two points for a 25-23 win.
St Mary started the second set with a 5-4 lead. After an 8-8 tie, the Warriors went in front 12-9. Castlewood extended that lead to 17-11. St Mary then went on a roll. The Cardinals chipped away and got within two points, 22-20, before tying the score at 23-23. Riding the momentum, St Mary scored the final two points for a 25-23 win to tie the match 1-1.
Castlewood took an early lead in the third set, 5-3. They were able to maintain their lead at scores of 8-6, 12-9, 14-10, 16-13, and 18-15. The Cardinals then went on a 7-4 run to tie the Warriors 22-22. The score was tied again 24-24, but Castlewood scored two in a row for a 26-24 win.
The Warriors took that late rally momentum to go in front 3-1. They extended the lead to 9-3. Castlewood stayed in front to a 17-10 score. St Mary would again put together another rally. The Cardinals went on an 11-5 run to pull within a point, 22-21. Castlewood, however, would end the match on a 3-1 advantage for a 25-22 victory.
Emersyn Herber finished with 15 kills, eight digs, five blocks, and two ace serves. Harper Werdel had 14 kills, 13 digs, and an ace. Maddyn LeBrun added seven kills, 16 digs, and three blocks. Layla Joe Hanson had 21 digs, and Natalie Gilbert had 37 set assists and 10 digs.
