The St Mary’s Cardinal volleyball team started their 2025 season on the road against the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks on Tuesday, August 25th. The Redhawks got the win in four sets by scores of 25-13, 25-21, 26-28, and 25-7.
The first set started with ties of 1-1 and 5-5. The Redhawks then took the lead 9-7 and would push that lead to 14-9. Estelline/Hendricks continued to extend the lead, 21-12, before getting the win 25-13. The second set remained close throughout. The score was tied 4-4, 7-7, 10-10, 13-13, and 16-16. The Redhawks grabbed a 20-18 lead and continued to held a two-point lead 23-21 before scoring the final two points to take the second set.
The third set was another back-and-forth battle. St Mary’s started on a 3-1 run and increased their lead to 7-3. The Redhawks responded with a 6-1 run to go in front 9-8. The Cardinals rallied to go back in front 14-12. Estelline/Hendricks then went on a run to regain the lead 18-16. St Mary’s scored the next three points for a 19-18 advantage. The two teams traded points to ties of 22-22, 24-24, and 26-26. The Cardinals were able to get the final two points for a win in the third set. St Mary’s scored the first point of the fourth set, but the Redhawks responded with an 8-0 run for an 8-1 lead and continued to roll from there. They built a set-high 23-4 lead before winning 25-7.
The Cardinals will host Alcester-Hudson on Thursday, August 28th. The match will be streamed on Big Sioux Media Sports Network.
