The St Mary Cardinal boys finished the 2025 South Dakota State B Boys Basketball Tournament with a third-place finish after a 71-54 win over the Wessington Springs Spartans in Aberdeen on Saturday, March 22nd. The Cardinals showcased their depth and efficiency on both ends of the court in the victory.
St Mary jumped out to a 20-13 lead by the end of the first quarter, fueled by strong offensive play from Maverick LeBrun and Trevon Beckman. The Cardinals capitalized on turnovers, scoring seven points off those turnovers. St Mary extended their lead to 38-24 by halftime by holding the Spartans to just 11 points in the quarter.
The Cardinals kept control of the game in the second half. St Mary outscored Wessington Springs 18-13 in third quarter to push their lead to 56-37 going into the final quarter. Despite the Spartans outscoring the Cardinals in the final quarter, St Mary cruised to the win.
St Mary shot 52.0% (26-50) from the field overall, 25.0% (3-12) from three-point area, and 69.6% (16-23) from the free-throw line. Wessington Springs shot 37.7% (23-61) overall, 23.8% (5-21) on three-point shots, and 27.3% (3-11) from the free-throw line. The Cardinals forced 18 turnovers in the game and had 15 second-chance points.
Four players finished in double figures for the Cardinals. Beckman had 21 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. LeBrun added 19 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, and four blocked shots. Trimmier Hanson had 16 points, four assists, and two steals. Jake Kopsas ended with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Beckman and LeBrun were named to the State B All-Tournament team. Beckman also received the Tate Senftner Memorial Scholarship.
