The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys held tough in the fourth quarter against the Bridgewater-Emery Husky rally for a 66-65 win on Friday, February 23rd. The win on senior night was their sixth straight to end the regular season.
The first quarter was back and forth and ended in a 14-14 tie. The Huskies started the second quarter on a 7-2 run for a 21-16 lead. Bridgewater-Emery maintained their lead throughout the quarter and were ahead 30-26 at halftime. The Cardinals started the third quarter on a 12-2 run for a 38-32 lead with 4:45 to play in the quarter. Their run continued and they built a 51-40 lead by the end of the quarter.
The Cardinals scored the first four points of the fourth quarter for a 55-40 advantage with 7:15 to play. The Huskies started to chip away at the lead and pulled within four points, 60-56 with 3:45 to go. St Mary scored the next four points to extend their lead to 64-56. After Bridgewater-Emery pulled within a point, 64-63, with a minute to go, the Huskies rebounded a missed shot and had a chance to take the lead with :37 to play. However for the Huskies, they turned the ball over on their next possession. Nic Gaspar maded two free throws for a 66-63 lead with :11 remaining. On the Huskies next possession, they made a layup, but time expired giving St Mary a one-point win.
Maverick LeBrun had 22 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Trimmier Hanson finished with 20 points, two rebounds, and three assists. Gaspar added 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two blocked shots. Trevon Beckman also had 12 points with five rebounds and three assists.
This year’s seniors were Nic Gaspar, Lucas Flemmer, Camden Gilbert, and Owen Vargas.
