Cardinal Girls Lose First Tough First Game

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team started the season with a tough road match against the Howard Tigers on Friday, December 8th.  The game was a tough physical battle as the two teams combined to shoot 47 free throws in the game.  Howard got just enough separation late in third quarter and held for a 42-35 victory.

The Tigers held a slim 10-9 lead after the first quarter of play.  The teams traded leads in the second quarter, and St Mary had the 18-17 lead at halftime.  Howard went on a 5-0 run after the Cardinals scored the first two points of the third quarter.  That run put the Tigers in front 22-20.  After St Mary tied the game 22-22, Howard finished the third quarter on an 8-2 run for a 30-24 lead.  St Mary got within three points, 34-31, after a made three-pointer with 2:35 to go in the game, but Howard made enough free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

The Cardinals shot 28% (13-47) from the field, just 2-19 on three-point attempts, and 7-15 from the free-throw line.  Howard shot 20% (9-44) from the field, 3-21 on three-point attempts, but held an advantage at the free-throw line finishing 21-32.

Brianna Griffin had 10 points and five rebounds.  Jenna Miller finished with nine points and six steals.  Addison Libis added seven points and four rebounds.  Maddyn LeBrun had four points and four rebounds.
