The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team fell to the Colman-Egan Hawks in the opening round of the Region 3B tournament on Tuesday, October 31st in Colman. The Hawks defeated the Cardinals in straight sets by scores of 25-13, 29-27, and 25-9.
St Mary opened the match with an early 2-0 lead in the first set. The score was tied 3-3 and 5-5 before Colman-Egan went on a 6-2 run for an 11-7 lead. The Hawks slowly extended the lead to 21-12 before finishing the set with a 25-13 win.
Colman-Egan started the second set with a 5-1 lead. They led 9-5, but the Cardinals rallied to within two points, 11-9. The Hawks scored the next two points to lead by four, 15-11. St Mary again got within two points at 18-16. Colman-Egan kept the Cardinals just far enough away and were at set point, 24-20. St Mary then made a big 5-0 run to take a 25-24 lead. The two teams traded points, and the score was tied 25-25, 26-26, and 27-27. Colman-Egan scored the final two points for a 29-27 win.
The momentum of from the second set carried into the third set for the Hawks. They started the third set with a 4-2 lead and grew it to 8-4. Colman-Egan then went on a 9-0 run for a 17-4 lead before winning the final set 25-9.
The Cardinals end the season with an overall record of 6-20.
