Cardinal Football Wins Double Overtime Thriller

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal football team ended their regular season with an exciting win over Deubrook on Friday, October 13th.  St Mary won a double-overtime thriller 20-18 on senior night over the Dolphins to finish the regular season with a 5-3 record.

The weather certainly kept the scoring down in this game.  Nic Gaspar put St Mary in front 6-0 with a seven-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.  The Dolphins tied the game later in the quarter on a four-yard touchdown.  Neither team scored again in the first half, and the halftime score was tied 6-6.

Gaspar put the Cardinals ahead 12-6 in the third quarter on a one-yard touchdown run.  That was the only score in the quarter, and St Mary led 12-6 going into the fourth quarter.  Deubrook tied the game with a 55-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.  Regulation ended with the score tied 12-12.

Neither team was able to find the endzone in the first overtime try.  In the second overtime, Deubrook had the ball first and scored on a fourth down, 10-yard run.  The Cardinal defense stopped the two-point conversion, but the Dolphins had an 18-12 lead.  St Mary was faced with a fourth down in their second overtime possession, and Gaspar pushed his way up the middle for a four-yard touchdown to tie the game 18-18.  Gaspar then was able to get into the endzone one more time on the two-point conversion to give the Cardinals a 20-18 win.

“The boys won a hard fought game against a good Deubrook team.  They played hard from start to finish.  It was a great win for our program,” said head coach Ross Flemmer.

The Cardinals had 316 yards of total offense, 268 rushing yards and 48 passing yards.  Deubrook finished with 179 yards of offense, all on the ground.

Gaspar had 30 carries for 123 yards and three touchdowns.  He also had two catches for 42 yards.  Lucas Flemmer finished with 17 carries for 53 yards.  Lincoln LeBrun had nine carries for 26 yards, and Trimmier Hanson had five carries for 19 yards.  Owen Vargas finished 4-11 passing for 48 yards and an interception.  L. LeBrun and Camden Gilbert each had a catch.

Flemmer had a team-high 9.5 tackles in the game.  Hanson had 7.5 tackles and a fumble recovery.  L. LeBrun had 5.5 tackles and a fumble recovery.  Gaspar finished with five tackles and a fumble recovery.  Gilbert also had five tackles.  Keaton Hansen had 4.5 tackles and a sack, and Maverick LeBrun had 2.5 tackles and two fumble recoveries.

The Cardinals will be the #6 seed in the 9B playoffs.  They will host #11 Potter County on Thursday, October 19th.
