The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team built a big lead to win their first game of the 2022-2023 season. The Cardinals defeated the Colman-Egan Hawks 58-48 on Saturday, December 17th.
Colman-Egan had a 5-4 lead with 4:30 to play in the first quarter, but for most of the rest of the game, the Cardinals were in control. St Mary finished the quarter on a 7-0 run for an 11-5 lead. They continued the run into the second quarter and pushed the lead to 19-5 with 4:30 left in the half. Colman-Egan finally broke their scoreless drought with 4:00 left in the second quarter. St Mary led 34-14 at halftime.
The Cardinals continued to dominate through the first half of the third quarter. Their largest lead of the game came with 3:40 left in the third quarter at 42-19. Colman-Egan then went on a run of their own. The Hawks ended the third quarter on an 11-3 run to make the score 45-30. They were able to get the lead to single digits, 57-48, but it was too late as there was only 30 seconds left in the game.
The Cardinals shot 40% (20-50) from the field, 25% (5-20) from three-point area, and 72% (13-18) from the free-throw line. Colman-Egan finished the game shooting 31% (18-58) from the field, 23% (5-22) from three-point area, and 54% (7-13) from the free-throw line.
Three players finished in double figures for the Cardinals. Trevon Beckman had a double-double witih 25 points and 11 rebounds. Trimmier Hanson had 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Nic Gaspar added 10 points and eight rebounds. CJ Smit had six points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Maverick LeBrun had six points and five rebounds.
