The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals boys basketball team finished last season with a 15-6 record, but lost in the opening round of the regional tournament to end the season. This year’s team will look to build upon that record with some new up in coming players.
The 2021-2022 team had eight seniors on the roster. This year’s squad will be lead by returners CJ Smith (senior), Nic Gaspar (junior), and Wyatt Geraets (junior). The underclassman will also be able to look to Dylan Mathis (senior) for his leadership throughout the season even though his senior year has been cut short due to an ACL injury. Head coach Colby Fitzgerald also mentioned Maverick LeBrun (sophomore), Trevon Beckman (sophomore), Trimmier Hanson (freshman), Lincoln LeBrun (freshman), and Walker Warwick (freshman) as players to watch for the Cardinals.
“After graduating eight seniors and two starters, we will be looking for individuals to step up into new leadership roles for the upcoming season. We will look to push the tempo in transition this season as we will try to utilize our team speed. We will continue to look for strong perimeter play with hops of shooting from the three-point area at a high percentage. Defensively we primarily play man-to-man, but will mix up our looks throughout the season to help us put ourselves in position to be competitive,” said Fitzgerald.
The Cardinals begin the 2022-2023 season at home on Tuesday, December 13th at home against Mitchell Christian.
