Cardinals Fall to Bulldogs at Home

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals hung with the De Smet Bulldogs for about three quarters, but De Smet pulled away late for a 52-8 win at Rickeman Field on Friday, September 2nd.

The Bulldogs got two scores in the first quarter on a 27-yard run and a seven-yard run.  Only one two-point conversion was made, and De Smet led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.  The Bulldogs added to the lead with 7:18 to play in the half on a four-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion.

Nic Gaspar had an interception later in the second quarter on the De Smet 10-yard line, and the Cardinals scored on their next offensive possession.  CJ Smith connected with Gabriel Lindeman for a seven-yard touchdown.  Smith scored on the two-point conversion, and the Cardinals trailed 22-8 with 4:41 to play in the half.  The score remained 22-8 at halftime.

De Smet added one score in the third quarter on a three-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion with 4:02 to play in the quarter.  The Bulldogs led 30-8 heading into the fourth quarter.  They then scored three more times in the final quarter and converted two of the three two-point conversions for the 52-8 win.

The Cardinals finished with 141 yards of total offense, 96 passing yards and 45 rushing yards.  De Smet had 298 yards of offense, 242 rushing yards and 56 passing yards.

Smith was 9-21 passing for 96 yards, a touchdown, and interception.  Lindeman had two catches for 12 yards and a touchdown.  Gaspar had four catches for 59 yards.  Lincoln LeBrun had two catches for 27 yards.  Gaspar had 11 tackles and an interception.  Camden Gilbert had 10 tackles.  Lindeman finished with eight tackles, forced fumble, and fumble recovery.  Smith had eight tackles.  L. LeBrun and Maverick LeBrun both had seven tackles, and Wyatt Geraets had five tackles.

“The boys played hard against a good De Smet team.  We made some mistakes, but we will learn from them and get better for next week,” said head coach Ross Flemmer.

The Cardinals (1-2) will travel to Castlewood on Friday, September 9th.
