Evelyn Schneider

Evelyn SchneiderEvelyn Schneider, 81, of Spencer passed away on Monday, December 23, 2013 at Golden Living Home in Madison. Funeral mass will begin at 10:30 am on Friday, December 27 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will follow at the Spencer Cemetery South. Visitation will begin on Thursday at 12 pm with a prayer service to be held at 7 pm and family present from 6 – 8 pm at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem.

Evelyn June Koepke was born on December 6, 1932 to Arthur and Millie Koepke at Spencer, SD. Evelyn helped her parents farm until she moved to Sioux Falls to work as a waitress.

On March 27, 1951, she married Roland (Kobb) Schneider of Spencer. The couple farmed together for over 40 years until Kobb’s failing health. Evelyn was very active in the Home Builder’s Extension Club, VFW Auxiliary, St. Mary’s & St. John Neuman’s Altar Society, as well as the Red Hatter’s. She also worked and volunteered at the Salem nursing home for many years. Evelyn remained living on the farm until she moved to Assisted Living in Salem. Later in life she moved into Golden Living until her death.

She is survived by: her children, Fr. Michael Schneider of Mitchell, Patty (Mike) Tritz of Pierre, Norma Engum of Sioux Falls, Linda (Jim) Merkwan of Dell Rapids, Steve (Kathy) Schneider of Harrisburg; nine grandchildren; and one sister, Fern (Henry) Kunkel of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland (Kobb), one granddaughter, Elizabeth Engum, two sisters and one brother.

Dorothy Dickerson

Dorothy DickersonDorothy Marie Dickerson, age 97, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Colton, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2013, at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls. A Celebration of Life will begin at 11 am Friday, December 27, 2013, at the Colton United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8 pm Thursday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Colton.

Dorothy was born on March 9, 1916, near Franklin, South Dakota to Henry and Margaret Wessel. She graduated from Franklin Consolidated School in 1933, and married Clem Dickerson on March 9, 1937.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Don (Mary) Dickerson, of Brandon, SD, and Lois (Ron) Qualseth, of Sioux Falls; daughter-in-law, Mary Dickerson, Dell Rapids, SD; eleven grandchildren: Alan (Donna) Dickerson, Casper, WY, Cindy Dickerson, Sioux Falls, Cristy (Mike) Appel, Pipestone, MN, Scott (Susan) Dickerson, Coarsegold, CA, Dean Dickerson, Gillette, WY, Trina (Tom) Kirkvold, Des Moines, IA, Delana (Scott) Ihrke, LeMars, IA, Darrin (Christi) Dickserson, Ellston, IA, Sheila (Scott) Finch, Brandon, Shon (Mollie) Qualseth, Lawrence, KS, and Ryan (Elizabeth) Qualseth, Tea; 20 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and one on the way; and a sister, Beverly Emmett, White, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clem; son, Lyle; grandson, Kelly; 5 sisters and 2 brothers.

Patrick G. Middagh was born on March 30, 1947 in Baker, MT, the son of Gerald and Ruth (White) Middagh. He moved to South Dakota where he worked in the farming and roofing industries in and around the Sioux Falls area.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Middagh of Sioux Falls and his brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jerry Wickre

Jerry WickreJerry Wickre, 70, of Colton, SD, died at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona on December 17, 2013.

Jerry was born July 1, 1943 in Chester, SD, the second child of Hjalmer and Wilhelmina Wickre. He graduated from Colton High School in 1961 and went on to electrical school. He spent most of his career in various electrical jobs and retired from Dakota Supply Co in 2005. On February 27, 1965 he married Carolyn “Carol” Mergen at St. Peter’s Church in Colman, SD. Carol and Jerry were blessed with two children, Debra Boyle from Lone Tree, CO and Steven Wickre, from Colton, SD.

Jerry is survived by his daughter Debra Boyle and husband John and their three children: Chase, Grant and Sydney, all of Lone Tree, CO. He is also survived by his son Steven of Colton, and Steven’s son Jacob, of Sioux Falls, his mother Wilhelmina Wickre of Colton; a brother, David Wickre, Sioux Falls; and three sisters: Marcene Woldt (Dan) Sioux Falls, Nancy Torgusen (Pete) Dell Rapids and Darla Jelken (Dick) Sloan, IA. He also leaves his mother-in- law Cecilia Baumberger Mergen of Dell Rapids, his three sister in laws: Mary Ellen (Roger) Scholz, Stuart, NE, Alice (Jack) Majeres, Dell Rapids, Teresa (Jon) Brooks, Yankton; three brother in laws Del (Carol) Mergen, Rochester, MN, James (Cheri) Mergen, Sioux Falls, Mark (Cheri) Mergen, Dell Rapids and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hjalmer Wickre in 1982 and his wife, Carol Wickre in 2004.

He was an avid antique tractor collector and loved the restoration process of it all. He not only enjoyed doing it for himself but also loved doing it for others in the community. In addition, he was a board member of Prairie Village Madison for 30 years and honored for his service by being named Grand Marshall this past August during Jamboree Days. He was incredibly talented and passionate about music playing by ear and had never had a lesson. He played several instruments including guitar, piano and accordion.

Mass will be Monday, December 23, 2013 at 10:30am at St. Joseph the Workman Church in Huntimer. Visitation will be from 3-5:00 PM Sunday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Colton.

Iva Alice Erickson

Iva EricksonIva Alice Erickson, 97, passed away Monday, December 16, 2013 at Riverview Health Services, Flandreau. Iva was born on October 29, 1916 in rural Flandreau to Henry and Jesse (Randerson) Sorensen. She grew up on a farm southeast of Flandreau and attended the Juve Country School. Because there was no bus service, she stayed with her grandparents in town while attending high school graduating from Flandreau High School in 1934. Iva married William C. Erickson on August 17, 1937 at Canton, SD. They farmed southeast of Flandreau for many years. Bill passed away on May 25, 1982. Iva purchased the home in town where she had lived with her grandparents while attending high school. Iva sponsored a foreign exchange student, Becky, from Norway in 1986-87 who she has visited twice in Norway and Becky has been to Flandreau 3 times to visit Iva. Iva loved to travel and has been to Norway, Mexico, the Caribbean, Hawaii and all throughout the United States. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, WELCA, Mothers Club, Birthday Club, Moody County Rustlers Club, Senior Citizens, Hospital Auxiliary, Sons of Norway and a former volunteer at Riverview Manor. Iva enjoyed music, was an avid Twins fan, and took care of the manor cat, Tommy. She is survived by 4 children, Gary (Alice), Pipestone, MN, Virginia (Andy) Corrinet, Downers Grove, IL, Glenda (Ken) Erickson-Bunkers, Dell Rapids, Trudy Erickson, Sioux Falls, 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, parents, 1 sister, Edith and 2 brothers, Donald and Raymond. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday, December 19, 2013 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with burial in Union Cemetery, Flandreau. Bernadine Rindels

Bernadine RindelsThe funeral service for Bernadine Rindels will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2013 in the Prairie Creek Chapel in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be two hours prior to the start of her service in Prairie Creek Chapel. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Chamberlain. Bernadine LaMae Hanscom was born on July 14, 1935 at Presho, SD, the daughter of Barnard and Daisy (Olsen) Hanscom. She attended school in Pukwana and graduated from Pukwana High School in 1953. Bernadine married Robert Rindels on December 13, 1953 at the Methodist Church in Kimball. They made their home on their farm south of Chamberlain. Robert passed away in 1978. She remained on the farm for three years before moving into Chamberlain in 1981. Bernadine worked for the State of South Dakota as Clerk of Courts in the judicial system for fourteen years.

On November 25, 1988, Bernadine married Richard Willard. This marriage brought her four more children. They lived in Chamberlain and wintered in Mesa, AZ. Richard passed away in 1996. After Richard’s death, she continued to live in Chamberlain and winter in Arizona. In 2007, she decided to move to Sioux Falls to be near her children and the medical community. She has lived at Prairie Creek since that time.

Beradine passed away on Monday, December 16, 2013 at the Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls. She was 78 years of age.

Bernadine was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Chamberlain, Zion Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, Town and Country Homemaker Extension Club, Brule County Republican Party, and the Prime Cow Belles. She enjoyed her family and friends.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, Rand (Lois) Rindels of Indianapolis, IN and Daniel Rindels and Fiance’, Rita of Madison, SD; her daughters, Kori (Tim) Kromminga of Sioux Falls and Sara (Craig) Smith of Newton, IA; her children, Dave (Tammy) Willard, LaRayne (Scott) Woster, Terri (Brad) Mohror, and Lisa Willard; and her nineteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Bernardine was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands,a brother Watt, a sister-in-law Mary Jo, and a son, Trevis Willard.

Laura Groos

Laura GroosLaura C. Groos, 86, of Flandreau, formerly of Colman, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the Riverview Manor in Flandreau. Mass of Christian Burial for Laura Groos will be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Peter Catholic Church in Colman. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at Kahler Funeral Home in Dell Rapids and will resume at 6:00 p.m. at the church in Colman. Laura C. Groos was born on April 13, 1927 on a farm southwest of Colman.  She graduated from Ash Grove Country School and Colman High School.  Laura farmed with her brother all of her life until retirement.  She moved into Colman in 1989. She became a resident of Green Leaf Assisted Living Center in Flandreau and then Riverview Manor in Flandreau.

She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Colman, the Altar Society, and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Laura is preceded in death by three brothers, six sisters, and her parents. Laura is survived by nieces and nephews.

Janet (Merry) Kock

Janet Merry KockJanet Kock, age 63, died at the Madison Community Hospital on December 11, 2013.

Janet Ruth Merry was born on January 21, 1950 at Dell Rapids, SD to James and Ruth (Hines) Merry. She married Richard Kock on November 7, 1975 at Dell Rapids.

She is survived by her husband – Richard of Madison. One son – Gregory (Krista) of Mitchell, two grandchildren – Caleb and Makenzie. Her mother – Ruth Merry and one sister – Joyce Norby both of Dell Rapids. One brother – Earl Merry of Cumberland, WI.  She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Weiland Funeral Chapel in Madison with Rev Melissa Fletcher officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date.

She grew up in Dell Rapids graduating from Dell Rapids High School in 1968. She attended business college in Watertown. She worked at Nash Finch in Sioux Falls for 8 years. She also worked for Amert Construction and was employed by ECCO as a case manager for the past 25 years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

There will be a prayer service at 7:00 PM on Friday at Weiland Funeral Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements.

Mae Gunderson

Mae GundersonMae Lorraine (Thompson) Gunderson, 90, of Baltic, died on December 10, 2013 at her home with her family by her side, after a brief battle with cancer, which she faced in a straightforward manner and with much grace. Visitation will be held at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Baltic on Friday, December 13, 2013 from 4-7:00 P.M. with the family present from 5-7:00 P.M. Burial will be held at East Nidaros Cemetery, rural Baltic, on Saturday, December 14 at 9:30 A.M. Funeral Services will be Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at the Baltic Lutheran Church.

Mae was born to Ole and Rachel Thompson in Renner, SD on September 26, 1923 and was raised on the family farm. Following her marriage to Orill Gunderson on June 23, 1945 they lived in Avon and returned to the farm where she was born in 1950, and lived there until moving to Baltic in 1992 after their retirement.

Mae attended grade school at the Thompson Country School and graduated from Baltic High School, then continued her education at Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls. She worked at the Central Electric & Gas Company, in Sioux Falls and Secretary at the Baltic School. She was an active member of the Baltic Lutheran Church and Baltic American Legion Auxiliary.

She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a good friend. Her grandchildren always knew that there would be fresh cookies, and friends always knew that Christmas season meant homemade divinity and lefse.

Grateful for sharing her life are her children, daughter Joan (Paul) Lerdal, Minneapolis; son Steve (Deb) Gunderson, Baltic; foster son, Gary Thompson, Dell Rapids; special friend and neighbor, Rita Berg, Baltic; 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Orill, 5 brothers and 1 granddaughter.

Her family expresses gratitude for her life and for your thoughts and prayers. We were all blessed to have her in our lives.

Maxine (Gillen) Martinson

Maxine MartinsonMaxine “Mickey” Martinson, 81, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at the Brookings hospital.  Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Volga Christian Reformed Church. Visitation is from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.

Maxine Helen (Gillen) Martinson was born Nov. 7, 1932, at Sioux Falls to Raymond and Mary (Haight) Gillen. She was raised at the Presentation Children’s Home in Sioux Falls. She attended school there and also at St. Mary’s in Dell Rapids. On June 1, 1950, she married Aaron Martinson at Flandreau. Mickey worked at various jobs, most recently at First Bank and Trust in Brookings for 18 years. Aaron “Marty” died April 28, 2004.

Mickey enjoyed crocheting, cross stitch, working jigsaw and word puzzles, bowling and going to flea markets.

Survivors include four children, Steve Martinson of Brookings, Larry (Lisa) Martinson of Canton, Okla., Lori Jagger of Brookings, and Mark (Lori) Martinson of Volga; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and three sisters: Marilyn Baker of Arlington Texas, Betty Lagina of Torrance, Calif., and Beverly Fritts of Chatsworth, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Lynette; four brothers, and a sister.
