Arlo Lyng passed away on February 28, 2014 at his home in Altamonte Springs Florida. Arlo was born on a farm 5 miles west of Dell Rapids. His parents were Fred and Olga Lyng. The family consisted of 2 brothers, Kenneth and Gordon, and 3 sisters, Doris, Marjorie, and Florence. The family moved to Sioux Falls SD in 1936. Arlo attended Hawthorne and Lincoln Grade Schools and Washington High School. He worked at John Morrell at age 16, and was drafted into the US Army at age 17. After basic training, he served in the landing of his unit on Okinawa where he was severely wounded. After hospitalization and several operations, he was released from the Army. He suffered through several more operations, and was declared 1oo percent disabled. Arlo was Commander of the American Legion, and belonged to the Kiwanis Club and the VFW. He was a member and ushered at Calvary Assembly of God Church for 20 years, a selfless donor, story teller and friend to all he met. In Sioux Falls he worked for the Gas Company for several years, and then at Nordica Food Service with his brother Gordon. In 1980 he moved to Florida, working in the Food Service Industry for 30 years. Arlo is survived by his four sons Kevin, Mark, Robert, and Michael and 1 daughter Brook Ann, and his sister Marge Kirby and brother Gordon Lyng, and 13 nieces and nephews, 7 grand children and 17 great grand children. A memorial service was held at Calvary Church of God on Thursday March 6th, with burial at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell Florida on March 7th, 2014. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday March 11, 2014 at Faith United Church, 800 So. Splitrock Blvd. Brandon, South Dakota at 10:00 AM. Dale Daugaard
Dale Chris Daugaard was born to the late Dwight Daugaard and Dorothy (Maass) Daugaard on November 20, 1961 in Sioux Falls, SD. He was a graduate of Dell Rapids High School class of 1980.
He then attended Iowa State University where he graduated in 1984 with a Mechanical Engineering Degree and began employment in Emporia, KS at Didde Webb Press. His most recent job was at Adams Thermal Systems in Canton, SD. Dale was united in marriage to Stephanie Renee Spellman on June 25, 1988 in Emporia, KS. Dale and Stephanie were married for 25 years and had 3 girls, Ann, Samantha, and Natalie. He spent much of his time attending the girls’ various activities ranging from sporting games to band and choir concerts and theater shows. He loved watching them and cheering them on. Dale enjoyed playing Frisbee golf in his spare time, both in the front yard and on the courses. He also made it back to Iowa State to play with the alumni band every year for homecoming. He never missed a homecoming game.

Harold Halvorson
Col. Harold C. Halvorson, M.D., age 83, of Kalamazoo, MI, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence in Kalamazoo.
He was born on July 1, 1930 in Dell Rapids, SD, the son of the late Harry and Mabel (Moe) Halvorson.
On June 26, 1955, he was united in marriage to the former Marilyn J. Fisher in Aberdeen, SD. Hal earned his Bachelor’s degree from University of South Dakota and then continued his education, leaving South Dakota in 1953 and attending the University Of Nebraska College Of Medicine where he earned his M.D. In 1956, he joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps for two years, with most of his service in Verdun, France. Three years of general practice were followed by a year of general surgery residency in Lincoln, Nebraska and a three-year OB/GYN residency at Washington University, St. Louis, MO. This was followed by a private OB/GYN practice in Lincoln, Nebraska and Albert Lea, Minnesota. In 1981, he reenlisted with the Michigan Air National Guard earning the rank of Colonel and State Air Surgeon, where he served until his military retirement in 1996. In 1978, Hal joined The Upjohn Co. in Portage, MI working in clinical investigation where he remained until his retirement in 1993. Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Marilyn Halvorson of Kalamazoo; their three children, Eric (Theresa) Halvorson of Indianapolis, IN, Elizabeth (Steve) Jakeway of Key Biscayne, FL and Leigh (Van Betulius) Halvorson of Indianapolis; one grandson, Eric II (Rachael) Halvorson and one great-grandson, Eric Halvorson III. Alvin Anderson
Alvin Anderson, 105, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014 at his daughter’s home in Byron, MN.
He was born January 4, 1909 at home in Moody County, SD to parents Nels and Anna (Nelson) Anderson. He grew up and lived most of his life in the area. Alvin married LaVerne Fodness July 26, 1945 in Dell Rapids, SD. The couple farmed east of Trent until 1996 when they moved into Dell Rapids and later to Sioux Falls.
After his wife’s death in 2007, he lived in Flandreau with his son, Alvin, and daughter-in-law, Barbie, and then into assisted living. He moved into his daughter Linda’s home in June 2013. Alvin is survived by sons, Alvin Anderson, Jr. and his wife Barbie, Flandreau, SD; Ronnie Anderson and his wife Robyn, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter Linda and her husband Denny Austin, Byron, MN; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Donald Nussbaum
Donald D. Nussbaum, 74, of Garretson died Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at Palisade Manor in Garretson. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Monday, March 3, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Burial will be in the Palisade Cemetery. Donald Delano Nussbaum was born on September 22, 1939, in Luverne, Minnesota to parents Henry and Annie (Anderson) Nussbaum. He grew up in the Garretson area and attended Garretson High School. He then went to carpentry school and worked as a finish carpenter and farmed in the Garretson area.
Donald married Diane Rademacher June 11, 1960, at Palisade Lutheran Church, Rock County, Minnesota. Don took pride in carpentry work and enjoyed hunting, playing cards and spending time with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Robert, a sister Joanne Huslander and a granddaughter, Jacquie Zweep.
Edna Margaret Olson
Edna Margaret Olson, 97, of Sioux Falls, died Thursday, February 20, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Saturday, February, 22, 2014 at First Lutheran Church at Artesian, SD. Burial will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Artesian.

Edna was born September 25, 1916 in Sanborn County to Joseph and Ida (Moseson) Olson. She graduated from Artesian High School. In 1942 she moved to Portland, OR and was employed at McCann-Erickson Advertising for thirty-four years. After retiring she enjoyed traveling. Several years later she moved back to Sioux Falls, SD to be close to family.
She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Artesian. Since in Sioux Falls, she was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. She was very active in volunteer work, loved playing bridge and traveling.
She is survived by one sister Irene Eining, of Mitchell; nieces and nephews: Barb (LaMoine) Torgerson , of Mitchell, Darrell (Judy) Olson, of Mitchell, Doug (Joyce) Olson of Mitchell, Carol (Gene) Luidahl, of Rapid City, Char Barta of Huron, Gayle (Bill) Klein of Dell Rapids, Shirley Olson, Neal (Kathy) Olson all of Artesian, Nancy (Bob) Arend of Sioux Falls and Sharon (Charles) Weatherford, and Steve Olson all of New Boston, TX; and many great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: Orlando, Victor, Otto, Leonard “Lyle”; one sister, Alice Olson; one niece, Norma (Olson) Deckert and three nephews: Doyle, Harlan and, in infancy, Roger Olson.
Thomas Fields
Thomas Dale Fields died in Grand Junction, CO, on Feburary 20, 2014, after heart surgery.
He was born to Dale and Mary Ellen Fields on December 30, 1954, in Dell Rapids SD, and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Dell Rapids. He worked as an electrician and owned his own business.
Tom is survived by his wife, Kathy, and his children Mariah and Noah; his mother, Mary Ellen Fields of Dell Rapids; his 3 brothers Richard (Melinda) of Fortine MT, Douglas (Linda) of Sioux Falls, SD Dennis (Marcella) of Golden CO; his 3 sisters, Kathy (George) Hanson of Littleton CO, Colleen (Kevin) Smith Ramsey MN, Lisa (John) Rivera of Austin, TX.Tom Joins his dad, Dale Fields in heaven.
VeLoris Daugaard
VeLoris Veronica Vasgaard Gerken Daugaard, 93, died Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Menorah Manor Nursing Center in St. Petersburg, FL. VeLoris was born May 8, 1920 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the daughter of John H. and Engila L. (Lukken) Vasgaard. She grew up on a farm north of Centerville, SD, attending the Ash Grove Country School, Lennox High School and graduating from Centerville High School in 1938. She graduated from South Dakota State College (now University) with a degree in Home Economics. VeLoris taught school for a short time prior to her marriage. On June 26, 1943 she was united in marriage to Arvid Gerken of Lennox, SD at Yuma, AZ. While they were married the couple had two children, and the family lived in South Dakota California, Nevada and Cincinnati, Ohio.
In 1975 VeLoris moved back to Sioux Falls, and on August 12, 1978 she was united in marriage to Arthur Daugaard, of Dell Rapids, at West Prairie Lutheran Church, Lennox, the church she had grown up attending. She and Art lived in Sioux Falls until 1997 when Art passed away, and then she moved to St. Petersburg to be close to her daughter in 1998. Throughout her adult life, VeLoris was always very active, either working or participating in organizations or activities. She worked as a teacher’s aide and in sales in a department store while in Cincinnati, and several years at Herberger’s in Sioux Falls.
While in Sioux Falls VeLoris was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where she was active in E.L.C.A. She was also a member of the Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered at the Senior Center. After moving to Florida she was an active member of Pasadena Community United Methodist Church and The Garden Club in St. Petersburg. She was on the Board and President of her condominium association for eight years. After a fall in September, 2006, she moved into an independent living facility and then an assisted living facility before moving into Menorah Manor in June, 2013. Besides her parents and an older sister, Inez, who died in childhood, and a brother and his wife, Elayton and Vivian Vasgaard, VeLoris was preceded in death by both of her husbands, Arvid on January 26, 1988 and Arthur on July 29, 1997.
Grateful for having shared her life are her two children: Bea (Bill) Rahter, St Petersburg, FL and David (Dianne) Gerken, San Diego, CA; two grandsons: Bill (Charisse) Rahter, Syracuse, UT, and Robert (Elizabeth) Rahter, Windeermere, FL; eight great-grandchldren: Alyssa, Will, Hannah and Bryce in UT and Madeline, Colton, Nathan and Ashton in FL. Also her step-children: Jean (David) Rave, Dell Rapids, SD, Carol (Don) Riswold, Sioux Falls, SD, Janet (Leo) Schwahn, Robbinsdale, MN and Allen (Mary Daugaard) Roy, UT, and their families; her sister and husband, Donna and Orval Fodness, Sioux Falls and brother and wife, John and Patty Vasgaard, Centerville and Mission, TX; and many other family members and friends. Services will begin at 1:30 Tuesday, February 25 at West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Lennox with burial in the West Prairie Cemetery. Nick Van Dam
Nick J. Van Dam, 85, of Dell Rapids passed away on Monday, February 17, 2014 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. His Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 21, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery. Military Rites will be provided by the Dell Rapids American Legion Firing Squad. Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Kahler Funeral Home with a Christian Wake service beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Nick J. Van Dam was born on November 20, 1928 at Dell Rapids, SD. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, seeing service in Japan and Korea with the Combat Engineers. He married JoAnn Beaner at St. Joseph Church, Wellington on May 28, 1957. He went to work for John Morrell and Co. and retired in 1991. He then drove school bus for the Dell Rapids School District for 18 years.
He was a Life Member of the Dell Rapids American Legion Post, of which he was a past Commander. He was also a member of the Post’s Color Guard and Firing Squad. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. He was a Life Member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Dell Rapids Sportsmen’s Club.
Nick is preceded in death by his parents, Nick and Catherine; his brother, Gerald and his sister, Helena Kriens.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn; his two sons, Floyde (Judy) of Montrose, SD, and Gerald (Jodene) of New Richmond, WI; his two daughters, Bonnie (Michael) Levin of Denver, CO, and Lois (Tom) Martin of Little Canada, MN; his eight granddaughters, one grandson, and seven great grandchildren; his sister, Ethel Ossefoort of Luverne, MN, and his brother, Joseph of Dell Rapids.
Sara Lea (Huewe) Schmidt
Sara Lea (Huewe) Schmidt, 46, died unexpectedly on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at her home in White.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in White. Burial is in Fairview Cemetery at White. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the church. Eidsness Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Sara was born March 31, 1967, and was chosen by Pat and Buzz Huewe to be a part of their family. As a child, she had a love for taking care of all her rabbits and dogs, and she was even spoiled enough to have a horse in her backyard. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Dell Rapids in 1985, Lake Area Tech in 1987, and Minnesota West Community Tech in 2009.
Sara worked many years helping the elderly. She found great self-worth in helping people. She had an amazing gift to comfort people who were struggling with life by giving a simple helping hand, a big smile, and using her gift to talk, talk, and talk some more. She had a way that it didn’t matter how bad of a day you were having, she could make you smile with her cheery attitude.
Sara gave birth to her pride and joy, Cody, on April 26, 1995. She married Wayne Schmidt and gained a step-daughter, Megan, on June 23, 2001, and moved to White, where they made their home until the time of her death. Despite her health issues, Sara took every opportunity to enjoy her life to the fullest.
She loved to spend time with her close friends playing games, doing crafts, talking, or just watching movies. She enjoyed the family camping trips, baking her holiday treats, and enjoying the company of her faithful furry friends Mickey, Oreo, and Abby.
She had many health issues – having her husband Wayne, son Cody, parents, and many friends by her side gave her great courage to handle everything with a smile and positive outlook.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne, and son, Cody, of White; step-daughter, Megan Schmidt-Guss (Jeremy); granddaughter, Lilley, of Wahiawa, HI; parents, Buzz and Pat Huewe of Dell Rapids; brother, Sam (Melinda) of Brandon; nieces and nephews; and pet dogs, Mickey, Oreo, and Abby.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jake and Leona Huewe, and Irene McEneaney.
