Eileen Donahue

Eileen DonahueEileen Donahue, 92, Wakonda, SD passed away Monday, March 14, 2016 at Wakonda Heritage Manor. On-Line Condolences may be left at Hansen Funeral Home.

Eileen Rose Fitzgerald was born October 2, 1923 at home in Mayfield Twp Yankton, South Dakota, the daughter of Nell Christopher and Mike Fitzgerald. She grew up in Mayfield and attended country school, Irene high school and graduated from Scotland in 1940. She studied two years at Mount Marty in Yankton and received a teaching certificate. She taught at country schools in the Mayfield area and one year at Wakonda. She married James W. Donahue of Wakonda June 25, 1947. James, who always called Eileen “Fitz” died April 10, 2011. They lived and farmed east of Wakonda and raised six children. She always had a large garden, many chickens and her children remember her delicious homemade bread.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, Claire, Roy, Kenneth and infant Harold Fitzgerald, two sisters Veronica Freimuth and Colette Kehrwald and a grandson, Kevin Koenig. She is survived by two sons, Patrick (Teresa) Donahue of Wakonda, Jim Donahue, of San Francisco, CA, four daughters, Kathleen (Jim) Koenig, of Tyndall, Mary (Wayne) O’Connor, of Faribault, MN, JoEllen (Virgil) Klein of Dell Rapids and Brigetta (Steve) Klein of Sioux Falls, 16 grandchildren: Christine Schelske, John Donahue, Brian Donahue; Carolyn Gleason, Maureen McFarlane; Angela Cina, Mike O’Connor, Nicholas O’Connor, Maureen Hauge, James O’Connor; Sister Marie Estelle Klein O.C.D, Theresa Kutz, Erin Fernandez; Mary Wuestewald, Sister Laura Klein P.C. and Tony Klein; 17 greatgrandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Arlys Stanford

Arlys StanfordArlys Stanford, 92, died Friday, March 4, 2016, at Heritage Senior Living.

Arlys Jean Phelps was born Feb. 25, 1924, at Rutland, to Donald and Hazel (Anderson) Phelps. She graduated from Madison High School and received on-the-job training at Madison Community Hospital as a surgical technician. She then worked at Madison Community Hospital for over 37 years. Arlys married John “Jack” Stanford on June 12, 1943, at Pipestone, MN.

Arlys was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and ladies groups, and she enjoyed playing cards and walking.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1978; one sister, Mary Peterson; four brothers, Edward, Ronald, Dale and Harold Phelps; and two grandsons, Robert and Jesse Alfson.

Survivors include four sons, Roger (Bonnie) of Madison, Rodney (Sandy) of Dell Rapids, Terry of Winter Park, CO and Keith of Sheridan, WY; three daughters, Linda (Richard) Nighbert of Madison, Patsy Mikel of Sioux Falls and Karen (Rick) Alfson of Madison; 15 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; three brothers, Darrell (Linda) Phelps of Madison, Thomas (Joan) Phelps of Sioux Falls and Richard (Janney) Phelps of Madison; and two sisters, JoAnn (Duane) McNeil of Ramona, CA and Nancy (Larry) Chase of Sioux Falls.Funeral Services 11 AM Wed. at Trinity Lutheran Church with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Family present for visitation 5-7 PM Tuesday with a Prayer Service at 7 PM at Ellsworth Funeral Home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Kimberly (Carlton) Ramse

Kimberly RamseKimberly (Carlton) Ramse, age 37, of Garretson, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Memorial services will begin at 11:00 am Monday, March 7, 2016, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Memorial visitation with the family present will be from 3-5:00 pm Sunday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson

Kim was born on February 13, 1979, in Tampa, Florida. She graduated from Garretson High School in 1997. She was employed at Lil Dreamers Learning Center, Palisade Manor, Steve’s Electric, and Gannon Bookkeeping. She was married to Jason Baldridge and Gary Ramse and was blessed with two daughters from these marriages.

Kim was an avid Oakland Raiders fan and enjoyed throwing darts and watching “The Voice” and “Big Brother.” She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and the Garretson American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her daughters: Kelsey Baldridge and Aubrey Ramse; mother, Linda (Jim Hoefert) Johnson, Garretson; grandparents, Ardyce and Lyle Stensland, Sioux Falls; siblings: Chett (Molly) Carlton, Dell Rapids, Lynn Jackson, Vidalia, GA, Christy (Carl) King, Rome, GA, Al (Shannon) Carlton Jr., Sioux Falls, and Lloyd (Jenn) Carlton, Oklahoma City, OK; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her dad, Al Carlton, Sr., and an aunt, Barb Bussey.

Irene (Cluts) Wagner

Irene WagnerIrene Rose (Cluts) Wagner, 93 of Sioux Falls died Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Trail Ridge Retirement Center. On-Line Condolences may be left at Heritage Funeral Home.

Irene Cluts was born August 27, 1922 in Willow Lake, SD the daughter of John and Mildred (Glines) Cluts. She lived in Vienna, SD until 1937 when she and her family moved to Dell Rapids, SD. She graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1940. She played and sang with the Doll Cluts Melody Girls until 1942. She was united in marriage to Russell Wagner on January 1, 1942 and they started their life together in Sioux Falls.

Irene and Russ were blessed with four children, Steven, Betty, Judy and Virginia. She worked for Montgomery Wards as a credit clerk for 15 years. She served as a Girl Scout leader and youth counselor at First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls, making work camp trips to California and North Carolina, Irene sang in the choir at First United Methodist Church from 1942 – 1979. Irene and Russ moved to Winter Haven, Florida when Russ retired in 1979 and lived there until 1999. While in Florida they attended St. Johns Church where she sang in the choir and she audited courses at Florida Southern University and the University of South Florida. She also participated in the CASA program as guardians of homeless children and in 17 Elder Hostels throughout the United States and Canada. She and Russ travelled extensively thought the United States and Europe.

In 2000 they returned to live in Dell Rapids for eight years and then moved to Sioux Falls where they have resided at Trail Ridge Retirement Center.

Grateful for having shared her life are: her husband, Russell and two daughters, Judy (Frank) Rebnord of Little Falls, MN and Virginia Hoeppner of Scotia, NY; and three grandchildren, Tim Rebnord, Tony Rebnord and Holly Hoeppner and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two children, Steven and Betty.

A memorial service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at First United Methodist Church with a private family burial preceding the service. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 pm Monday at Heritage Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to Asera Care Hospice, 528 North Sycamore Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57110.

Evelyn Pauline Gerlach was born August 19, 1922, at Stickney, SD, to Albert and Gladys (Younie) Moller. She was baptized at the Mount Carmel Church rural Mount Vernon. She attended school in Aurora County, graduated from Stickney High in 1940 and then graduated from the Notre Dame Academy in Mitchell. Evelyn taught school in rural Stickney and lived with the Fred Bruinsma family during her teaching years. On May 12, 1943, she married Lorenz Gerlach at her parent’s home. She was confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Dimock. The couple lived and farmed east of Corsica until retiring in 1980 and moved to Mitchell. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Mitchell and the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Dimock.

Evelyn is survived by a son, Dwight (Sherry) Gerlach of Corsica, two daughters, Maryjane Buzay of Ramsey, MN, Marilyn (Lyle) Reimnitz of Mount Vernon, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two sisters, Marylouise Weiland of Mitchell, Phyllis Wieczorek of Corsica and two sisters-in-law, Lois Moller of Mitchell and Wilma (Ray) Bogenhagen of Dell Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lorenz, a daughter Ladonna, two grandsons, Brian and Patrick, one son-in-law, Paul Buzay, her parents and her brother, Gilbert Moller.

Margaret “Maggie” Schrader

Maggie SchraderMargaret “Maggie” E. Schrader, age 78, of Huron, died Saturday, February 27, 2016, at her home. Her funeral service was held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, March 1st at the First United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Margaret Elizabeth Luke was born July 19, 1937, to August and Mary (Neis) Luke at Marion. She attended rural school and then graduated from Parker High School in 1955. Maggie graduated in March 1956 from the South Dakota Beauty Academy at Sioux Falls. Maggie worked at Betty’s Beauty Shop in Huron from 1956 to 1958.

On August 2, 1958, Maggie married Warren “Keith” Schrader at Huron. After their marriage, she worked as a beautician for seventeen years in her home, then as a cook for Huron High School and later as a sales clerk at Pheasant Liquor. Maggie began work at the Beadle County Register of Deeds in June 1989 and retired in December 2000. She also volunteered at the Huron Regional Medical Center as a Pink Lady.

On November 3, 2015, Maggie was diagnosed with high grade myelodysplastic syndrome. With the MDS, many other unexplained complications arose that put her in and out of several hospitals and emergency rooms, and after numerous procedures were tried, it was deemed that nothing more could be done. We were then able to have her at home for eleven days on hospice where she was able to have some peaceful, comfortable days to say her good byes. She will be missed by many.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Travis Knouse; one brother, Donald (Berdell) Luke; one sister, Marlene (Tom) Weber; two brothers-in-law, John Kreis and Jack Sarnowski; and one sister-in-law, Marie Luke.

Blessed for having shared her life are her husband, Keith Schrader of Huron; four daughters and their husbands, Rose (Derek) Knouse of Huron, Cynthia (Stuart) Neuharth of Alpena, Kathy (Randy) Tounsley of Huron, and Nancy (Frank) Spiegel of Watertown; one son, Wayne (Teresa) Schrader of Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Maggie is also survived by her seven brothers, John Luke of Marion, Jerome (Elaine) Luke of Mott, North Dakota, Joseph (Karen) Luke of Dell Rapids, William (Sandy) Luke of Clark, Ray (Connie) Luke of Sioux Falls, Michael (Joyce) Luke of Hartford, and Paul (Margie) Luke of Marion; four sisters, Donna Miller of Mott, North Dakota, Christine Sarnowski of Blair, Nebraska, Berniece Kreis of Ashland, Nebraska, and Veronica (Frank) Narsavage of Moscow, Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews.

Norman Telkamp

Norman TelkampNorman Telkamp, 89 of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls, SD. Norman Albert Telkamp, son of Albert and Thelma (Tift) Telkamp, was born on September 1, 1926 in Brookings, SD. Following graduation from Brookings High School, Norman served with the US Army Signal Corps at Vint Hill Farms, Virginia. Following his honorable discharge, he attended and graduated from SDSU.

Norman was united in marriage to Mildred Oleson on September 12, 1948 in Arlington, SD. Norman worked with the Veterans Administration at Ft. Meade, SD, until moving to Armour, SD., where he was the Douglas County Extension Agent for 25 years. In 1979, they moved to Sioux Falls and he served as the Minnehaha County Extension Agent until retiring in 1984. Following retirement from the Extension Service, he worked as a crop insurance adjuster. Norman and Millie spent their winter months in La Feria, TX.

Norman was active in many groups, including the Masons, EAA, United Church of Christ, International and SD Flying Farmers, and the SD County Agents Association. Norman held a commercial pilot’s license, along with a flight instructor and an aerial applicator rating. In addition to flying, he loved spending time with family. Norman always had a quick smile and a story for new and old friends.

Grateful for having shared his life are his son Gary Telkamp, Rapid City, daughters Sharon Johnson and husband Luke of Dell Rapids, Janelle Hearnen and husband Robert, Mitchell, brother Doug Telkamp and wife Teresa, Rutland, step mother Betty Telkamp, Brookings, four grandchildren, Noah Johnson, Micah Johnson, Kelsey Hearnen, Cade Hearnen; and many other relatives and friends.

Norman was preceded in death by his wife Mildred and brothers Kenneth, Marvin, (Jack), Ray and Keith Telkamp.

The family will be present at 10 am. followed by a prayer service at 11 am., First Congregational Church on Saturday, March 5, 2016, with burial at 2 pm at Greenwood Cemetery, Brookings, SD. On-Line Condolences may be left at Miller Funeral Home.

Joe Gunn

Joe GunnJoseph Gunn, 84, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Dell Rapids passed away on Friday, February 19, 2016 at Avera McKennan Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday at Kahler Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. On-Line Condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Born in Sioux Falls on October 26, 1931 to Joseph and Cora (O’Neal) Gunn, Joe attended Riverside Elementary and Cathedral Catholic Schools, graduating in 1951. While in high school he earned his Eagle Scout badge and, as a senior, enlisted in the Army National Guard.

In 1984, Joe and Marjorie moved to Dell Rapids and, three years later, he retired from Morrells. To occupy his time, he worked for the Dell Rapids Public Schools as a custodian and bus driver. He was also active as a member of the St. Mary’s School Board and an energetic supporter of the St. Mary’s Booster Club. Retiring from his work at the school, he continued to be active by mowing at McKennan Park for the Sioux Falls Parks Department. In October 2015, Joe and Marjorie made their home in Sioux Falls.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Marjorie; his sons, Paul (Betty) of Watertown, SD; Steven (Pamela) of Loveland, CO; Jeffrey (JoAnn) of Aberdeen, SD; Scott (Stephanie) of Ankeny, IA; and Patrick (Rachel) of Sioux Falls and his daughters, Deborah of Arlington, VA; Mary (Sean) Sieler of Port Orchard, WA; Diane (Kurt) Gildemaster, Jennifer (Glenn) Brynjulson both of Sioux Falls; and Theresa (Tracey) Gunn of Wisconsin Rapids, WI. He had 21 grandchildren, Melissa, Krista, Shane, Jessica, Keith, Zachary, Holly, Brooke, Sara, Talin, Ashley, Nicholas, Andrew, Kari, Karl, Adriana, Alexa, Allison, Christopher, Peyton, and Isabella and his 5 great grandchildren, Memphis, Dylan, Avrial, Marlee and JJ. He is also survived by sisters Patricia Behrends, Karen Wright, both of Sioux Falls; and Mary Cupery of Las Vegas, NV and by brothers Mike, Tom (Carol), and Bill (June), all of Sioux Falls, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his son, Robert; his parents; his sister, Sharon; his brother, James; his brothers-in-law, Ed Behrends and Edward Wright, and his niece, Jeannie.

Minnie Schmidt

Minnie SchmidtMinnie V. Schmidt, 88, of Flandreau, SD, passed away Monday, February 15, 2016 at Avera Flandreau Hospital. She was born March 18, 1927 in Henry County, IA to Jesse and Mary (Miller) Jerrel. When she was an infant her family moved to Montana where she received her education. Minnie moved to Dell Rapids, SD in 1945 and worked at IOOF Home in Dells. She married LaVern Schmidt on January 7, 1947 in Dell Rapids. They moved to Flandreau in 1947 and farmed northwest of Flandreau. In her younger years, she was a foster mother to several infants and older children. Minnie cooked big meals for harvesters and was involved in a neighborhood card club when they farmed. Her husband preceded her in death on March 2, 2000. She was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, Altar Society and Pleasant Hour Extension Club. Minnie loved family gatherings, cooking, crafting and tending flowers. She made the best caramel rolls, popcorn balls, cookies and bread pudding. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she spent all year buying presents for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Minnie is survived by four daughters, Barbara (Dick) Muckle, St. Paul, MN, Beverly (Jerry) Austin, Keystone, SD, Karen Schipper and Jerrelyn Haman, both of Flandreau, four sons, Bob, Jim (Camilla) and Rick, all of Flandreau, and Steve (Brenda), Baltic, 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and two brothers, Harold Jerrel, Raymond (Peg) Jerrel, all of Miles City, MT. Minnie was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson Drew, one great-granddaughter Jada, one son-in-law Steve Haman, two sisters and five brothers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5 – 7 p.m. Friday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau, with a 7 p.m. rosary. On-Line Condolences may be left at Skroch Funeral Home.
