Gladys Heinricy

Gladys M. Heinricy, 97, of Colman, SD, passed away Friday, August 26, 2016 at the Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls, SD. Gladys was born June 14, 1919 at Colman, SD to Fred and Anna (Kroger) Thiele. She graduated from Colman High School in 1938. Gladys married Leo Heinricy on October 26, 1940 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Colman. They lived on a farm northwest of Colman until 1977 when they retired and moved to Colman. Gladys worked at the Colman Area Rec for several years. Her husband preceded her in death on May 19, 1990. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Colman Senior Citizens and enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, cooking and especially baking pies.

Gladys is survived by her son Dick (Darlene), Colman, SD; daughter Kathy (Chuck) Relf-Schmidt, Avondale, AZ; daughter-in-law Shirleen Heinricy, Sioux Falls; 10 grandchildren, Todd, Danny, Paula, Aaron, Shane, Laurie, Noel, Heather, Jim, Brad; 17 great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Kaitlin, Tyler, Josh, Brooke, Myha, Jordan, Whitney, Elly, Wesley, Aiden, Quincey, Keeley, Lance, Mitchell, Connor, Macy; 5 great-great-grandchildren, Karsen, Kenden, Braelynn, Trent, Rogan; 2 sisters, Laura Croon, Dell Rapids, SD; Wilma Beck, Madison, SD and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Leo, son Leo John, granddaughter Julie, parents and 4 brothers, Leo, Lloyd, Lonnie and Frank.

Todd Fisher

Todd Dean Fisher, 55, of Pipestone, MN and longtime resident of Trent, SD, passed away on August 22, 2016. A celebration of Todd’s life will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Kahler Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, September 9, 2016. Todd was born on June 1, 1961 at Worthington, MN, the son of Gerald Dean Fisher and Lillian Mae Fisher (Olson-Troff). He attended Flandreau High School and a technical vocational school as well. Todd worked for Wyland Construction, Co. for several seasons as a truck driver and laborer and Bayliner Boat Company in MN. Todd met Lisa Erickson (Peacock) of Pipestone, MN and married in 1988 (-1990) in Lake Tahoe, NV and resided in CA. Todd worked for the city of Fairfield, CA and ran his own slurry seal business. Todd returned to SD in the late 1990’s where he worked in the neon sign business, drove farm trucks for several local farmers and subsequently started his own neon lighting business. Todd was a skilled mechanic, carpenter, and construction engineer.

Todd was known for his athleticism. He was a talented basketball, baseball and softball player. His passion was fishing. He spent many hours along the banks of the Big Sioux River and several local lakes. When in CA he loved crabbing at Bodega Bay and panning for gold. He was a gardener and antique picker. He was compassionate for the young children, the elderly and animals.

Todd has three daughters, Kasey Fisher, Shelby Sumers and Rachel Bedell. He was so proud of his beautiful daughters. He was able to spend more time with them in the last year of his life. He taught Kasey to trout fish and get through the “gargoyle grass.” Todd’s friends remember him as “one of the funniest guys they ever knew.” He could make the old and the young laugh out loud.

Todd is preceded in death by his mother, Lillian (Olson) Fisher Troff, his step father, Robert Troff and Evelyn Bedell.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Kasey Fisher of OK, Shelby Summers of CA, Rachel Bedell of OR; his sister, Robin (Fisher) (Jon) Rowe of Kalamazoo, MI; his brother, Rodney Troff of Flandreau; his three nieces, Chelsea Cullen of AZ, Caitlin Cullen of AZ and Natalie Rowe of MI; his cousins, Terry, Mark and Paul Wheeler, Julie Mathias and Eric Erickson, Lisa Fisher and Sonia Lyn Sumers.

Milton Munk

Milton J. Munk, 91, of Dell Rapids died Sunday, August 21, 2016 at the Dells Nursing & Rehab Center. Memorial services will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday September 10, 2016 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM at the church. Milton James Munk, son of Edna (Artz) and Jesse Munk, was born August 10, 1925 at Dell Rapids. He grew up in the Dell Rapids area and attended country school at the Nelson School. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1944. Milton entered the United States Army in 1945 and was stationed in Germany, being discharged in 1947.

Milton married Audrey Van Briesen on November 17, 1945 at Camp Robinson, Little Rock, Arkansas. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids until 1948 when they moved to a farm northeast of Dell Rapids. In 1969 they moved to Dell Rapids when he went into the livestock and grain trucking and order buying business. He was the recipient of many Livestock Safety Hauling awards. He was on the Board of Directors for the South Dakota Livestock Trucker Association. He retired (the first time) in 1989. He helped his brother, Harold on the farm for a year and later drove truck for Buskerud Construction, Dells Materials, and later for Dells Coop Grain Company. He also helped Bill Klein’s sons with harvest. Since then he retired at least six times.

Over the years Milton was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids, the Dell Rapids American Legion and the South Dakota Livestock and Truckers Association.

Milton was an avid sports fan, especially football and the Green Bay Packers, baseball and NASCAR. Milton and Audrey enjoyed some winters in San Benito, Texas. When he wasn’t driving truck, he enjoyed coffee and fellowship with good friends at T & C.

Milton was preceded in death by his loving wife, Audrey who died October 18, 2012, their son, Rick; his brother, Eldon and his wife, Vera and his brother, Harold.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Randy (Karen) Munk, Bobby Munk, Candy Munk, Sherry Munk and Peggy Munk; grandchildren, Nathan, Audrey Anna, Andrew, April, Gabriella, Abdul, Wade, Darin, Jennifer, Erin and Holly; nineteen great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law, Gail Bares.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Dell Rapids American Legion or Compassionate Care Hospice.

Aloha King

Aloha King, 90, passed away Friday, August 19, 2016 at Dell Rapids Nursing and Rehab in Dell Rapids, SD. Aloha Kruger was born on August 24, 1925 to Martin and Ethal (Stevens) Kruger in Twin Brooks, SD. She attended school in Kilborn, SD. She lived in South St. Paul, MN, before moving to Sioux Falls, in 1979.

Aloha was a member at St. John’s Lutheran Church as well as Active Generations and the Moose Lodge. She had a love for dancing and belong to the Golden Age Dance Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Yttreness, Dell Rapids, SD; son-in-laws, Gary Yttreness, Sioux Falls, SD, Gordan Beck, Madison, SD; grandchildren, Todd (Lois) Yttreness, Kansas City, MO, Laura Baker, Brandon, SD, Jay Yttreness, Brandon, SD, Alicia Burkhard, Harrisburg, SD, Marty (Billie) Lusk, Sioux Falls, SD; great grandchildren, DJ (Christyn) Yttreness, Jason (Kris) Yttreness, Josh Yttreness, Nathan Saygili, Melissa (Colin) Pearson, Lindsey (Greg) VanZee, Cory Burkhard, Ellie Lusk, Rylie Lusk and 10 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Russell Jacobsen, parents; daughter Sharon Lusk; sisters, Lillian Snell, Violetta Runge and Alvina Runge, brother, Lloyd Kruger.

Jean (Briley) Weelborg

Jean Weelborg, 95, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at the Dells Area Health Center. In honor of Jean’s wishes, there will be a private family service held. A public memorial visitation with family present will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home on Friday, August 12, 2016. Jean Jane Briley was born on August 15, 1920 at Dell Rapids, SD, the daughter of Frank Allen Briley and Flossie (McCafferty) Briley. She grew up and attended school in Dell Rapids, graduating from Dell Rapids High School. After high school she married Ralph Weelborg on March 28, 1940 at Emmetsburg, IA. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids. Jean worked at the Briley grocery store until helping her husband run the Weelborg Brothers Construction Company. The couple ran the business until their retirement in 1983. In retirement the couple loved to visit the Black Hills at the Rushmore Campground in Palmer Gulch on lot 265 and winter in their retirement home in Arizona. Ralph passed away on March 31, 2008. Jean remained in her home until the time of her death.

Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dell Rapids, a past Girl Scout leader, a past 4H leader, an observer for the U.S. Air Force during WWII, DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), and the Rebekah Lodge.

She enjoyed the fire truck which was in many local parades filled with her children and grandchildren, golfing, bowling, knitting and crocheting. She made afghans for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Cathryn Brown and Margaret Peterson, an infant grandson, Colby Luttmann and great-granddaughter, Alexis Luttmann.

She is survived by her daughters, Roberta (Gary) Luttmann of Flandreau, Dolly (Mark) Feehan of Dell Rapids, Joy (Fred) Zwart of New London, MN and Peggy (Keith) Hannemann of Yankton; her grandchildren, Levi (Katie) Luttmann, Malia (Jason) Holbeck, Marcus (Katie) Feehan, Amber (Jesse) Steiner, Cory Parks, Lucas Feehan, Tom Hannemann, Noah Luttmann, Abby (Kirk) LeBrun and Dan (Tiffany) Parks and her seven great-grandchildren, Ella and Parker Luttmann, Daisy, Torin and Haydin Holbeck, Reese Feehan, and Max Steiner and her many nieces and nephews.

Lillie Heesch

Lillie Heesch, 88, of Dell Rapids passed away Saturday, August 6, 2016 at the Brooking Hospital. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at the United Methodist Church, Dell Rapids. Lillie was born September 27, 1927 in Sioux Falls to parents Albert and Rose (Byg) LaShier. She grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School. After her education she worked as a dental hygienist for Dr. M. B. Paulson in Sioux Falls.

Lillie married John Heesch February 4, 1950 in Sioux Falls. She moved to the farm near Dell Rapids where she lived and farmed with her husband. She also worked for Sioux Valley Telephone Company for many years until her retirement. She then volunteered at Sioux Valley Hospice for 12 years. John died July 16, 1998. Lillie continued to live on the farm until moving to the United Living Community in Brookings in 2012.

She was a long time member of the United Methodist Church in Dell Rapids.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son, James (Virginia) Heesch, Flandreau; three grandchildren, Jonathan (Dory) Heesch, Michelle Heesch and Melissa Heesch; two great grandchildren, Jonathan and Devorah; and a sister, Bonnie Bentley, Spearfish, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John on July 16, 1998 and her son, John on March 10, 2003.

Betty Grace (Thue) (Utesch) Hart

Betty Grace Hart of Watertown South Dakota, died on August 6th 2016. Funeral services will be held Tuesday August 9th at 11AM, at the Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Watertown South Dakota. Betty Grace Hart was born on July 10, 1923 to Peter & Emma (Shepherd) Thue at Bryant, SD. She attended Cleveland #3 Grade School and graduated from Bryant High School in 1941. She was baptized, confirmed, and taught Bible School at Garfield Lutheran Church, rural Bryant.

Betty attended Augustana College, Sioux Falls, for two years in 1941-1943 after which she taught grade school in Lake Norden for one year. She did office work in San Francisco, CA from 1944-1947 and returned to Bryant and taught grade school for another two years.

In 1948, Betty married Harold (Hod) Utesch on Nov. 20, 1948 and she worked at the Bryant Medical Clinic. Together, they purchased the Bryant Theatre in 1953 and she returned to teaching for another nine years until 1967 when they moved to Bloomington, MN, where she taught 4th grade for 17 years. Hod died in September, 1983. Betty married Stan Hart in Hayti, SD on August 18, 1984 and they made their home in St. George, UT. Stan passed away in July 1990.

While living in St. George, she did volunteer work and took many trips. She especially enjoyed the 3 week cruise across the Atlantic and visiting Australia and New Zealand. With her sister and brother-in-law, she was thankful to visit relatives and ancestral places in Denmark & Norway. Always on her “bucket list” was to visit St. Petersburg, Russia which she got the opportunity to do in August, 2014. One could always find Aunt Betty enjoying her reading, politics, sports especially the Minnesota Twins, playing cards, doing puzzles, or handiwork especially counted cross-stitch and crochetting. Betty returned to Watertown, SD in December 1995 to be near family. She was an active member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church along with its “Young At Heart” group, weekly Bible Study and LWML.

Aunt Betty is survived by nieces and nephews: Ken (Jane) Thue, Waunakee, WI, Lon (Denise) Arneson, Chippewa Falls, WI, Ned (Joanie) Arneson, Hayti, Chris Thue, Dell Rapids, Mary (Peter) Manley, Wisconsin Rapids, WI & Mona (Frank) Cifaldi, Cumberland, WI, William Pedder, Oakland, CA & Jim Pedder, Orinda, CA. Also surviving her are her brothers-in-law: Charles (Marilyn) Arneson, Watertown, and Charles Utesch, Charlotte, NC. Her aunt, Evelyn Thue, Bryant. She is, also, survived by many cousins, special friends (which are many) and her special caretaker, Debbie Vetter.

Dale Dunn

Dale Dunn, 90, of Redfield, formerly of Dell Rapids, passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield. His funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 8, 2016 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Trent Cemetery. A Masonic Service will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, 2016 in the chapel at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield. On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Dale Rodney Dunn was born to Dr. Leonard L. and Effie A. (Peterson) Dunn in Harrisburg, SD on January 29, 1926. At the age of 2, his family moved to Dell Rapids, SD where the family was engaged in farming and his father was the local veterinarian. Dale attended Dell Rapids Public School and graduated in 1944.

During high school Dale was actively involved in music and sports and played in the 1943 State B High School Basketball Championship game. In 1944 he received an appointment to the US Naval Academy. He attended prep school at the University of South Dakota where he played basketball. He enlisted in the US Navy in the spring of 1945 during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific until 1947.

Following Dale’s military service he returned to South Dakota and was united in marriage to Alice M. Lee on June 27, 1948 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. He farmed with his family and attended South Dakota State College during the winter quarters until he graduated with a degree in Poultry Science in 1952.

In 1956 Dale received an appointment as Postmaster in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. Dale retired in 1988 after serving as Postmaster in Dell Rapids and Trent for 32 years. After retirement, he worked part time at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield from 1989 until 1993. Dale also served as caretaker of the Trent Cemetery for many years.

As an adult Dale enjoyed hunting, playing golf, bowling and participated in a horse shoe league. During retirement he enjoyed doing laundry, baking, yard work and spending time with his standard Poodle “Doc”. Dale was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids where he taught Sunday School, served on Church Council and was head usher for many years. He was a 70 year member of the Dell Rapids American Legion, 69 year member of the Masonic Lodge and served as Worthy Patron of his Eastern Star Chapter for over 30 years. He was a charter member and served on the Board of Directors of the Dell Rapids Historical Society, served on the Dell Rapids City Planning & Zoning Board and was a member of the Dell Rapids Lions Club.

During the 1980s and 90s Dale and Alice enjoyed wintering in Mesa, Arizona during February and March following the spring practice of the Chicago Cubs. In recent years they became active fans of the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

Following a lifetime of living in and loving the Dell Rapids community, Dale and Alice moved to the Eastern Star Home & Star Court Suites in Redfield in 2011. During the past five years Dale has aged with dignity and enjoyed life to the fullest.

Dale is survived by his wife of 68 years, sons Mark (Darlene) Dunn and Rodney Dunn of Sioux Falls and Raymond Dunn of Redfield and daughters Mary (Gail) O’Donnell and Karen (Jon) Jacobs of Redfield; sister Barbara Christopher of Rapid City; 15 grandchildren, 8 step grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, 2 son-in-laws, one daughter-in-law and one step-grandson.

John Rasmusson

John Rasmusson, 83 of Sioux Falls, formerly of Dell Rapids passed away suddenly on Wednesday, August 3, 2016. His funeral service will be held on Monday, August 8, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation on Sunday, August 7, 2016 will begin at 2:00 p.m. The family will be present to greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home. John Rasmusson was born on December 16, 1932 at Edgar, NE, the youngest son of Sander and Ruth Rasmusson. The family moved several times in John’s youth as his father was a Pastor. John graduated from high school in DeWitt, NE and then went to the University of Nebraska on a Navy ROTC scholarship. He majored in civil engineering.

After graduation, he served three years on the USS Mathews, home ported in Long Beach, CA. While in the Navy, he met and married Joan Ollig who was teaching in Long Beach. Their wedding was on March 23, 1957 at Belmon Shore Methodist Church. John’s father officiated. He was separated from the Navy in 1959 and the rank of LTJG. He became employed as an Engineer in Training at the firm of Black & Veatch Consulting Engineers in Kansas City, MO. While there, he became a registered professional engineer in the state of Missouri. He was active in the American Society of Engineers, Kansas City Chapter.

In 1962, the family moved to Ada, MN to work in the Ollig family owned telephone business. After two years in Ada, they relocated to Dell Rapids, SD where John became General Manager of Sioux Valley Telephone Company and Vice President of Ollig Utilities Company. In addition to Sioux Valley, Ollig owned Norman County Telephone Company in Ada, MN, Sleepy Eye Telephone Company in Sleepy Eye, MN, G.O. Miller Telephone Company in Goodhue, MN, Hills Telephone Company in Hills, MN, and Valley Cablevision in Dell Rapids. John was president of the South Dakota Telephone Association and served on the board of the South Dakota Network. He was actively involved in the cellular side of the telephone business when it first came on the scene in SD, MN, and Iowa.

John loved taking photos, and in later years became the proud owner of a Canon EOS Rebel XT digital camera. His favorite subjects were people … friends and family, as well as places they traveled. After the children left home, he resumed his lifelong ambition to play tennis. He joined Woodlake Athletic Club, took lessons from Marty Johnson, and played in a weekly league supervised by Don Grebin. It was during that time that he fell one night and suffered a concussion requiring surgery to relieve the hematoma that resulted.

John is survived by his wife, Joan of Sioux Falls; his son, Peter (Joan) Rasmusson of Sioux Falls; his two daughters, Pam Carroll of Chicago, IL, and Laurie (Oliver) Wolfert of Washington, DC; his grandchildren, Christian, Wesley, Evan, and Ryan Rasmusson, Megan Carroll-Kulick (Aaron), Matthew Carroll, Clair and Eliot Wolfert; his sister-in-law, Gail Ollig – Lillard of Phoenix, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

Minerva Morris

Minerva Morris, 86 of Parker, died Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls. Minerva Mary Petersen was born on October 31, 1929 in Turner County, SD to Fred and Gladys (Nowstrup) Petersen. As a child she moved with her family to the Parker area where she graduated from Parker High School in 1947. On May 24, 1952 she was united in marriage to Francis Morris at Parker. They lived in Parker where over the years she helped her husband with bookwork and was employed at the Turner County Courthouse. She was a member of St. Christina Catholic Church, enjoyed reading and playing bridge.

Grateful for having shared her life are her 4 children, Thomas (Lori), Dell Rapids, Wanda (Doug) Steward, Lennox, Paula (Marvin) Miller and Renee Jans, all of Parker; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; and a brother Paul Petersen, Santa Barbara, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Francis in 2012, a grandson Aaron, a sister Joanne, and 4 brothers, Pete, Frisco, Gilbert, and Micky.
