Bob Hinricher

Robert “Bob” Hinricher, 95, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2016 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. His Mass of Christian Burial will begin 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 17, 2016 in St. Mary Catholic Church. Visitation on Sunday, October 16, 2016 will be from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The Christian Wake Service will begin at 4:00 p.m. with a rosary to follow in Kahler Funeral Home. On November 11, 1920 Robert (Bob) was born into the family of Frank and Helen (Reistoffer) Hinricher near Granville, Iowa. He was the oldest of 6 children. The family moved to the Colman area in South Dakota where he finished 8th grade at the Colman Country School. At age twelve, his mother passed away. For a short time, he lived with his grandma Mary Reistoffer. His help was needed on the farm and the neighbor’s farm which kept him from going to high school. He worked for many businesses and farmers in the area. As a teenager, Bob traveled from South Dakota to Texas, through Colorado by boxcar with other hobos, while trying to reach his Uncle Joe in California. But he ended up in Wyoming where he picked corn by hand, broke horses, branded cattle, sheared sheep, cut timber and built log cabins. He changed teams of 16 horses for the Wyoming Mail Express.

He served in the 10th Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater from 1941 to 1946 attached to the 1st Combat Cargo Squadron and the 326th Troop Carrier Squadron. His Squadron received “Presidential Unit Citation” distinguished service on January 29, 1944 as part of the India-China Wing.

Robert’s 21st birthday was one month before Pearl Harbor was bombed and United States entered World War II. Robert immediately enlisted in the Army and was assigned first as an observer/radio operator on the West Coast where they were guarding against an invasion by Japan, and then to Karachi, India, as a C-47 cargo plane navigator/radio operator. He flew 30 missions over the Himalayas, delivering gasoline and other materials to resupply the Chinese war effort against Japan and for the U.S. Army Air Corps based in India. Flying over “The Hump,” as airmen called the Eastern Himalayas, was extremely dangerous and was made more difficult by the lack of reliable charts, an absence of radio navigation aids and a dearth of information about the weather. More than 1,000 men and 600 planes were lost by the end of the airlift. Bob told his family about the many near-misses he experienced and the friends he lost in the campaign.

After the war, Robert returned to Dell Rapids. He met Charlotte Nemmers at a wedding dance and married her one year later on September 5, 1949. They rented the first of three farms and started a family. The family moved to Dell Rapids in 1960 where Robert worked as a carpenter, feed salesman and mechanic. At one time, he operated gas stations in Sioux Falls. He loved to read books, playing cards and going fishing. He is a long time member of Dell Rapids American Legion and St Mary Catholic Church of Dell Rapids. He was honored by St Mary School by giving him an honorary diploma. In his retirement, Bob loved to work on his sons’ farms and his daughters’ melon and pumpkin patch and enjoyed selling the produce to ladies who were amazed at his mental calculations at the age of 80. He provided daycare with his wife Charlotte for his two grandsons. He loved gardening and growing grapes to provide produce for Charlotte to can and freeze.

Robert will be remembered for his life’s values: any work (no matter how hard) is good work, always be honest, keep your word even if it’s to your disadvantage, give to charity, and don’t take advantage of people by charging interest or raising prices.

Robert died on October 3, 2016 at Dell Rapids Rehab and Nursing Center. He died from complications of old age. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, Dell Rapids, SD; his daughter Kathy (Lon) Tonneson, Glyndon, MN; his sons Terry, Thousand Oaks, CA; Ron, Woonsocket, SD; Earl (Melanie), Forestburg, SD; Joe (Edie), Dell Rapids, SD; Mike, Hendersonville, TN; Tim (Lisa), New Prague, MN; and 18 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; his sister Evelyn Weinacht, Dell Rapids, SD; his brothers Elmer (Betty), Flandreau, SD; Omer, Aurora, CO. Sister-in-law Eva, Knoxville, IA and his brother-in-law Quintin Nemmers, Dell Rapids, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents Helen and Frank, brothers Andrew and Norbert, sisters-in-law Bernice Hinricher, Florence Ginsbach, Mary Page, Sr. Gertrude Nemmers, Sr. Helen Nemmers, Fern Nemmers and brothers-in-law Mike Weinacht, Roman Nemmers, Fr. Charles Nemmers, Fr. Leonard Nemmers, John Nemmers, Arnold Nemmers.

He is grateful in spending his life with his wife and his extended family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Loren Toennies

Loren Toennies, 89, of Cresbard, passed away Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Faulkton Senior Living, where he has resided since January of 2014. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 22, 2016 at the United Methodist Church, Cresbard, with Pastor David Birkeland presiding. Burial followed in the Cresbard Cemetery. Loren Elmer Toennies was born at home on August 8, 1927 to Walter and Lillian (Bowers) Toennies. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Cresbard, graduating in 1945.

On June 11, 1950, Loren was united in marriage to Lucille Spanier. They made their home one mile south of the “home place”; raising kids, crops and livestock.

He was a longtime member of the Cresbard United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Men, served as a Sunday school teacher, was a 60+ year member of the AF & AM Masonic Lodge, was past master and noble grand of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Cresbard and Faulkton, belonged to the National Farmers Organization, and served on the Township board, the FHA Board and the Wecota Cenex Board.

Loren will be dearly held in the hearts of his family and friends for his love of farm life, tilling the earth, bringing in the harvest, and tending to his herds and flocks. He had a God-given gift of conversation, and particularly enjoyed talking about farming.

Loren’s memory will be cherished by his wife of 66 years, Lucille of Cresbard; sons: Gerald (Judy) and Gene (Sylvia Salwei) of Cresbard and Mark (Kelly) of Faulkton; daughter, Lorie (David) Miller of Sioux Falls; 19 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys Gjernes of Chelsea; sisters-in-law, Judy Toennies of Cresbard and Arlene (Leon) Smith of Northville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was welcomed into his eternal home by his parents; mother and father-in-law: Henry and Gladys Spanier; son, Dean Toennies; granddaughter, Amy Toennies; great grandson, Everett Kallas; brother, Merlvin Toennies; and brother-in-law, Joie Gjernes.

Rod Beckman

Rodney “Rod” Beckman, 73, of Hartford, passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 in St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 26, 2016 at Kahler Funeral Home. Rod was born on October 24, 1942 at Duluth, MN, the son of Arnold and Wilma (Deckert) Beckman. He moved to Canistota, SD with his family as a child. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school before graduating from Canistota High School in 1958. Rod worked on farms, did custom combining, and worked with traveling carnivals. On July 7, 1979 he married Helen Eulberg in Dell Rapids. They made their home in Sioux Falls and Rod worked as a truck driver. They moved to Hartford in 1999. He quit truck driving in 2010. He has been driving a pilot car since that time.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Sioux Falls since 1988. His hobbies included having coffee with other truck drivers and Facebook.

He is survived by his wife, Helen of Hartford; his two brothers, Calvin (Sandra) of Myrtle Beach, SC and Eugene of Sioux Falls; his two sisters, Carol (Michael) Freese of Rapid City and Diane Walter of Traverse City, MI and many nieces and nephews.

Neal Jacobson

Neal L. Jacobson, 95, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Bryant, passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society Village in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Miller Funeral Home West Chapel. Neal Loren Jacobson was born on October 1, 1920 to Lawrence (L.A.) and Grace (Spilde) Jacobson in Bryant, SD. Neal grew up in Bryant, SD. He attended school and graduated in 1938 from Bryant High School. He continued his education and graduated with a business degree in 1942 from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD.

After receiving his education, Neal was drafted into the United States Air Force in September of 1942 to serve during WWII. He was stationed in England with the 335th Bombardment Squadron for two and a half years until the end of the war in Europe. He was honorably discharged in September 1945. Following his military service, he returned to Bryant where he joined the Bryant State Bank and met Norma Thompson. They were married 58 years from July 27, 1947 until Norma’s death in 2005. Together they raised their three children Lee, David and Nancy in Bryant.

Neal worked 50 plus years for the Bryant State Bank until his retirement. He served for many years as President and Chairman of the board and continued his service to the Bank as Chairman, Emeritus.

Neal was a lifetime member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bryant, SD and an associate member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD. He was a member of the American Legion Post #37 and the Masonic Lodge. He served on many boards and committees as a member of the Bryant community. These included Chairman of the bank board, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church building board, Parkview Care Center board, Bryant Development Corporation board, Bryant Clinic board, and Bryant School board. Neal was a member of the South Dakota Bankers Association and the Independent Bankers Association of America (IBAA). He served on the Executive Council of the IBAA.

Neal and Norma enjoyed their retirement years during the winter months in Sun City, AZ. Since 2004, Neal has made his home in Sioux Falls, SD.

On Sunday, September 18, 2016, Neal died at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls, SD. He was 95 years old.

Neal was deeply devoted to his family. His family, grateful for having shared in his life, included his two sons, Lee and his wife, Jan Jacobson of Sioux Falls and David and his wife, Carol Jacobson of Dakota Dunes, SD; his daughter, Nancy Jacobson of Sioux Falls; his five grandchildren, Bret and his wife, Shauna, Brad and his wife, Shannon, Paul, Philip and Nicole; his four great grandchildren, Logan, Sam, Reese, and Riley and a host of relatives and friends.

Preceding Neal in death are his wife, parents, and sister, Delores Woldt. Blessed be his loving memory.

Arvin VanHolland

Arvin VanHolland, 76, of Dell Rapids passed away Saturday, September 10, 2016. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Thursday, September 15, 2016 at the Reformed Church in Dell Rapids, SD. Arvin VanHolland was born February 13, 1940 in Luverne, MN to parents Bert and Jennet (Top) VanHolland. He received his education in Sioux Falls, SD. Following graduation he joined the US Army. After his service to his country he attended Barber College, graduating in 1962. Arvin married Carol Vanden Bosch February12, 1963. The couple farmed near Egan, SD. After retirement the couple moved to Dell Rapids and were members of the Reformed Church

Arvin enjoyed car shows, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared his life are his sons, Clint VanHolland, Brookings, SD and Wade VanHolland, Dell Rapids, SD; daughter, Tammie (Jim) Bauer, Elkton, SD; grandchildren, Trevor, Ashley, Dillon, Mason and Gavin; brothers, Brent VanHolland, Iowa and Verlyn (Janice) VanHolland, Dell Rapids; sisters-in-law, Theresa, Lorraine and Verna; several nieces, nephews and cousins as well as many other relatives and friends.

Arvin was preceded in death by his wife, Carol in 2011; parents and brother, Virgil.

Joan (Schwebach) Brown

Joan C. Brown, 83, of Summersville, WV passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2016 in the Summersville Regional Medical Center. Born July 8, 1933 in Dell Rapids, SD; she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Kottman Schwebach. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ronald J. Brown in 2006; two brothers, Joseph Schwebach and Urban Schwebach; two sisters, Isabelle Schmidt and Cordula Williamson.

Joan attended all twelve years of schooling and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Dell Rapids. She went on to Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD, to earn her teaching certificate. She also attended Dakota State teacher’s college. She was the first lay teacher at St. Mary’s Elementary Catholic School in Dell Rapids, SD. She also taught in Parker and Rapid City, SD, and a private school in Manhattan, NYC.

She married Ronald J. Brown on December 26, 1959. They had four children, Ann Christiansen (Tim) of Austin, TX, Paul Brown (Mary), Patrick Brown, and Alice Hamilton (CJ), all of Summersville; grandchildren, Melissa (David) Augustine, Kelly (Matt Schmidt), Andrew, Nichole, Christy, Anna and Jacob Hamilton, Rachel, John Paul, Luke and Mary Angela Brown and six great grandchildren; Matthew Christiansen, Brianna, Samantha, Catherine and Nicholas Augustine and Adeline Schmidt; two great-great grandchildren, Zayden and Aleah Augustine; three sisters, Mary Ann (Alfred) Loiseau of Egan, SD, Helen (Mike) Hattervig of Dell Rapids, SD and Clare (Conrad) Hubert of Babylon, NY.

Joan’s life was her family. Whatever her children were involved in she was there. She was a Girl and Boy Scout leader as well as fundraising chairman, a room mother for many years, active PTA member, as well as being a CCD and RCIA Teacher for her church. She loved her Catholic faith and participated in every aspect that she could by volunteering as a member of altar society or ladies group as well as a religious education teacher.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at the St. John’s Catholic Church at Summersville with interment in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery at Summersville. Mina Beck

Mina J. Beck, 66, of Brookings passed away Monday, September 5, 2016. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM Friday, September 9, 2016 at Minnehaha Funeral Home Chapel in Dell Rapids. Mina was born May 7, 1950 to parents Sam and Dorothy (Blom) Berghorst of Edgerton, MN. She was the second child of five siblings. Mina attended Edgerton School System and later graduated from Southwest Minnesota State University in 1977 with a degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management. She managed Gannon Bar and Restaurant and the Calumet Inn in Pipestone. Mina decided to further her education at South Dakota State University and received her four year degree in Nursing. She was employed at Sanford Hospital and at Good Samaritan Facility in Pipestone. Mina’s last employment, which was her calling, was with Intercorp Rehab Specialist which she enjoyed greatly. Unfortunately she needed to retire in 1992 because of health reasons.

Mina entered long term care facilities April 7, 2011. She was at Golden Living in Sioux Falls for a short time before moving to Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids. Mina was at Brookview Manor in Brookings were she passed away Monday, September 5, 2016 after a very long, lingering illness of Lupus.

Mina is lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Michelle (Todd) Canfield and Melissa (Chris) Hansen; very special friend of 38 years, Ray Fuder; four siblings, John Berghorst, Sam (Barbara) Berghorst, Jr, Diana (David) Linnemeyer and Pat (Merle) Behrens. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Kylie Baumberger, Kenzie Baumberger, Jacob Hansen, Alec Hansen, Noel Hansen, Tate Hansen and Briar Hansen; and dear little great-granddaughter, Ella.

Loved ones that are celebrating and welcoming her to her heavenly home are her parents, Sam and Dorothy; nieces, Cindy, Erin, and Jessica and nephew, Baby Boy Linnemeyer.

Larry Forbes

Larry Dean Forbes, 69, De Smet, and a lifelong resident of Spirit Lake Township, passed away August 26, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family after a short, but courageous battle with leukemia. A funeral service was held on August 30, 2016, at Presbyterian Reformed Church, Willow Lake, SD, with a burial at a later date. On-line condolences may be left at the Osthus Funeral Home.

Larry was born on March 17, 1947, in Willow Lake, South Dakota and was the oldest child of Virgil and Mabel (Tschetter) Forbes. He attended country school at Shady Lawn #8 through the eighth grade. He then attended and graduated from Willow Lake High School, where according to him, he spent too much time in the Ag Shop.

He married “the good lookin’ girl from Bancroft”, Cindy Jencks, on December 30, 1967 in Bancroft, SD.

Larry started farming and raising cattle after high school. He took great pride in his cow herd and enjoyed checking the cows with his dogs. During his younger years, Larry did custom hay hauling and also owned one of the first big round balers in the area. Larry was very mechanical and was an excellent welder. His dad, brother, and kids depended on him to keep things around the farm running. Larry was known for his love of candy and was affectionately known as “the Candy Man” to many of his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed attending his grandkids’ events, watching NASCAR, talking politics, watching Westerns, reading, and had developed an eye for photography.

He served on the Willow Lake School Board for 8 years. Larry was also a proud member of the Kingsbury Cattlemen’s Association and served on the Grace Lutheran Church Council in Willow Lake.

Larry is survived by his two dogs, Pete and Poco; his four children, Troy (Pam) Forbes, De Smet; Stephanie Forbes (Paul Panning), Hamburg, MN; Jill (Jason) Sommer, Parkston, SD; Jeremy (Jamie) Forbes, De Smet; grandchildren Wyatt, Cody, Jaycie, Abby, Carter, Claire, Cooper, and Tabor; his mother, Mabel Forbes, De Smet; brother, Lyle (Cheryl) Forbes, Bancroft; sister, Linda (Darrel) Mandernach, De Smet; brothers-in-law, Terry Jencks, Shakopee, MN; and Randy (Karen) Jencks, Arlington, SD; Tim Reuter, Dell Rapids, SD; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Cindy Forbes, on May 8, 1991; his father, Virgil Forbes; sisters, Sharri Zell and Darlene Reuter; and his father and mother-in-law, Hollis and Corlyss Jencks.

Loren Vrooman

Loren Scott Vrooman of Dell Rapids, SD, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at his home. He was 58. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at Faith Temple Church, 2121 W 33rd St., Sioux Falls, SD 57105. Visitation will begin at noon, with the family present from 5:00-7:00 pm Friday, September 2, 2016, at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave., Sioux Falls, SD 57104. Loren was born to Danny and Hazel Vrooman on February 25, 1958 in Pierre, SD. During grade school, Loren moved with his family to Sioux Falls, SD and attended Franklin Elementary. He also attended Edison Middle School before graduating from Lincoln High School in 1976.

After graduation, Loren began work with his father, Danny, as a mechanic at The Gas Stop for a few years in Sioux Falls. Thereafter, he moved to Nebraska where he managed a truck stop until 1979. Loren then enrolled in truck driving at Midwest Coast School. He drove for several companies until 2000. Loren then began his career in prosthetics and worked as a technician for Orthotic & Prosthetic Specialty in Sioux Falls.

Loren married the love of his life, Deborah Jean Schieber, on September 20, 2015 in Sioux Falls after sharing 18 years together. They made their home in Colman, and later moved to Dell Rapids. Their first trip together was to Key West, FL. It was such a beautiful area that they both had trouble wanting to drive back home. They also made a couple trips to Sturgis, SD for the bike rally where they enjoyed the motorcycles.

Loren enjoyed cooking for family gatherings and particularly liked to grill. His specialty was pork loin. He spent his summers gardening and canning. Loren loved to hunt with his family. He also enjoyed golfing, watching NASCAR races, and riding his Harley motorcycle. Last year, Loren and Deb had the opportunity to purchase Loren’s newest Harley – the one that Loren was meant to have. They made a special trip to Pennsylvania to bring it home. Loren especially loved and cherished his grandchildren, and would do anything for them. A loving and protective husband, father, and grandfather, Loren would go out of his way to help those in need.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Deb, Dell Rapids, SD; sons, Michael Bowen (Sarah), Colman, SD, Paul Bowen (Megan), Pierre, SD, Dan Bowen (Nicole), Colman, SD, Wesley Hoeke, Sturgis, SD; daughters, Kristy Hawkins (Bill), Colman, SD, Jamie Bowen, Canton, SD, Chelsey Attebery (Jake), Corvallis, OR; thirteen grandchildren; parents, Dan and Hazel Vrooman, Sioux Falls, SD; and two brothers, Bruce Vrooman (Sue), Superior, WI, Chad Vrooman, Sioux Falls, and his nephew, Justin Vrooman, of Ohio. Margaret (Geraets) Mairose

Margaret Mary Mairose, 97, passed away Monday, August 29, 2016 at Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. Margaret Mary Geraets was born on April 20, 1919 to Henry and Mary (Rickerl) Geraets in Dell Rapids, SD, where she grew up and attended public school. Margaret moved to Sioux Falls in 1943. She was a supervisor and instructor with Northwestern Bell Company before marriage.

Margaret was united in marriage with Jerome Mairose on September 2, 1947 in Dell Rapids, SD. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls, where they raised their 5 children. Once her husband retired Jerry and Margaret traveled extensively in the US and overseas.

Margaret was a member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the American Legion, VFW, DAV Auxiliary, Moose Lodge and the Catholic Daughters. One of Margaret’s favorite things to do each morning was to complete a crossword puzzle. She enjoyed theaters, musicals and social events with friends and especially cheering on the Minnesota Twins. Margaret loved spending time with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Above all she was a loving and caring, mother, grandmother, sister and friend that will be greatly missed.

Margaret is survived by her children, Gordon (Mary) Mairose, Robert (Vickie) Mairose, Mary (T. Al) Washburn, Jane Mairose all of Sioux Falls, SD, and son John (Julie) Mairose, Rapid City, SD; 3 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; sister, Dolores Salviola, Dell Rapids, SD, and many more family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and 13 brothers and sisters.
