The Beresford Watchdog volleyball team hosted the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars on Thursday, September 19th. The Watchdogs won a five-set thriller by scores of 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 21-25, and 15-8.
The Cougars started the first set with a 4-0 run. The Watchdogs responded with a 7-2 run for a 7-6 lead. They extended their lead to 15-11. McCook Central/Montrose rallied for a 9-1 run to take a 20-16 lead. The Watchdogs rallied one more time to tie the set 22-22 and then carried the momentum to a 25-23 win. The second set started with ties of 2-2 and 7-7. Beresford held leads of 10-8, 13-11, and 16-15 before the score was tied again 18-18. After another tie of 23-23, Beresford scored the final two points for a 25-23 win.
The Watchdogs jumped out to a 7-2 lead to start the third set. They maintained a five-point lead at 13-8 and then extended the lead with a 7-3 run to lead 20-11. Beresford looked to be headed towards ending the match in straight sets. The Cougars rallied to cut the score 22-20 and then finished the set on a 5-1 run to earn a 25-23 come-from-behind win. That momentum carried into the fourth set. The Cougars started the set with a 4-2 lead and then extended it to 12-7. They lead stayed at five points at 18-13. The Watchdogs were able to tie the score 21-21, but McCook Central/Montrose ended the set on a 4-0 run to even the match at two sets apiece.
Beresford got off to a quick 3-0 start in the fifth set. They pushed the lead to 10-4. That run was enough to keep them in front the rest of the match. The Watchdogs held leads of 11-16 and 13-7 before taking the win 15-8.
